The gibson sounds a bit thicker to me but for 1400 usd less I'd take the epiphone
Anyway, you can change the pickups to full Gibson for a couple hundred pounds!
@@SixDifferentWays. mhm and now that gibson sells them separately it's substantially easier now
@@scout802 yeah
@@scout802 Given that upgrading with Gibson pickups is going to be fairly popular now that you can buy them direct from Gibson, I wonder how long it will be before Gibson offers _all_ its Epiphone guitars with Gibson pickups as a direct-from-the factory option?
@@pulaski1 I'd say give it a year at most
Gibson: Sounds like a guitar
Epiphone: Sounds like a guitar
Damn.
Playing those riffs on the A string instead of the E is the exact opposite of what Tony Iommi tells people to do when they play it.
Tony would probably play it on the low E string but the way the guy in the video is playi it( starting on the second fret) would make more sense on the A or move it up 5 frets so but he didn’t do either
It doesn't matter what string you play it on if the note value is the same. On guitar we are lucky enough to have access to multiple versions of the exact same note. For instance if we played the E on the twelth fret of the low E string its the exact same note as the E on the 7th fret of the A string, and that same E can be found a 3rd time on the the second fret of the D string. So as long as you are playing the right notes it doesn't matter where you play it. It's all about what you personally want to hear and making it your own. The higher string just tends to have more attack cause it's brighter. So it honestly doesn't matter that Tony says he plays it in a different position because the notes are the same regardless.
@@madhatter19xx13 tone quality is different on different strings. for example playing on the low e string has more punch and heaviness than playing on the a string.
@whoizthedrizzle which if you paid attention I said that higher strings are brighter in sound but it still doesn't matter what position you play it in it's the same notes if he wants to hear it that way it's still being played correct nothing has changed as far as note value goes.
@@whoizthedrizzle which is the reason Tony gives for playing it on the E
Toni always played those riffs on the e string

@@madhatter19xx13 no I totally agree fella that people can play it the way they want to but playing it on the low E string does sound lower and heavier compared to the A string does which is why Tony played almost all his riffs high up on the E string.
@@dingdongs7025playing it on the A string is a garanteed way to get a million guitar nerds riled up in the comments. Its like when people spell stuff wrong on purrpiss, its a troll
Yeah but he played half step down which is technically E flat tuning or whole step which is D standard tuning. Unless you tune to one of those you won’t get the authentic sabbath sound.

Epi is killin it
Harrison with the Epiphone fanclub here to tell you they've been Killin it for some time now.
The Gibson seems to have more low end but the Epiphone sounds crisper and more crunchy.
Absolutely incredibly close 🪶🤘🏼
mainly because of the Amp he's running them through
Awesome !! But it needs to be played through a LANEY AMP !
And leather fingertips. Cross necklace.
And treble booster like to boost or Dallas rangemaster
@@davesaenz3732didn't know a cross necklace will add to actually PLAYING the instrument and hearing a certain tone 🤣
@@danielmcgregor1it was a joke
Good job, detective! I'm taking the piss mate @@oliverb.8995
Use the Sabra Cadabra pedal with the Epiphone and you’ll have an affordable Black Sabbath rig.
God I love the SG body
the epiphone stays in tune. salute to glenn fricker
Wow the Epiphone actually sounds better to me
Yup I agree 100%
Yeah it sounds a bit sharper
Stop foolin yourself
@@dezionlion why?
@@dezionlion right back at ya, keep paying the Gibson price
Both are great! U can actually sound just as bad ass on the Epi w/another amp! Grear has come a long way! Rock on brother! 🤟☠🔥🔥🔥
When it comes to tony iommis tone. He had a dallas rangemaster treble booster directly into a 100w laney supergroup and he played with relatively thin strings i think the highest is a 8
I want one so bad! I’d go the Epiphone even, sounds pretty close to me!
Epiphone is a little more spunky
Awesome! Cheers!!
I've got both and they are both a pleasure to play.
These differences are easily sorted out with knob twisting.
Damn that sounded great
Damn near identical.
The Gibson is way huge sounding. And the headstock angle. No one mentions that. 17 degrees vs 14 degrees. At least they were like that. Idk about now though
The epiphone p90s sound a tad bit like single coils compared to the Gibson
They both have p90s, and p90s are single coil pickups.
@@castleanthrax1833 I meant the strat single coil thin sort of sound
I don't know why, but the SG is one guitar I will always buy the Epiphone version and not even the $1500 or cheaper Gibson one.I had one Epi SG I put the Gibson 490's in it and it was such a great guitar unfortunately I sold it.
Okay but which sounds best when you tune to C standard and add the Laney Iommi special drive
Both sound fine
The Epi sounds a bit thinner than the Gibson. Easily remedied by changing out the pickups. And you’ll still have $1200 in your pocket 😉
Will go for the Epiphone crispiness.
I'm shocked.
Pretty good dude
I've always liked Epiphone better!
They experiment more, push for different looks. Gibson is very conservative. Gibson fans don't like change very much.
When something’s fixed it doesn’t need fixing
If it ain’t broke don’t fix it.
@@paulchoate1
When you're looking for a new sound or look, you have to make some changes.
@@ryanhoffman5477 Why should they change? They have heritage and are authentic. Gibson is like the Rolex, or Porsche under the guitars. Very ignorant and dumb to ask for a brand like that to focus on change, then you really don’t understand much about positioning.
@@djent1448 The word inflation mean anything! If there's thousands of the same Gibson then the value of it go's down! If there's only so many for that time frame then the value goes up.
Epiphone to me is great because you can experiment with ideas out of the box and not worry about value. But yeah you're right, why change Gibson, it's a great cash cow!
Mr. Anthony "Riff Master" Frank Iommi 🎸🔥⚡️🤘
I’ll take epiphone all day. I love a nice Gibson, but I really dig that crispy edge on the epiphone. 🤘🏼
I’d love to hear you play headless cross on that Gibson or the solo from when death calls on a Brian May guitar.
I was surprised at the difference myself - didn’t think there would be much but the Gibson sounds much more powerful
Tone comes from the pickups and pickup distance from the strings. That’s it (aside from the obvious factors of amp, speakers, effects, and the way the strings are picked/strum/plucked)
I would much rather have the Gibson, but for the first time ever, I can say that the other phone is the one that actually had the great sound
The epiphone sounds like it's already in a mix if that makes sense .
Tony Iommi plays iron man on the e string starting with power chord with 7 as root
@@madhatter19xx13 I know the notes are the same but my point is the song is heavy, so the heaviest sound you can get is playing power chords on the e and a instead of a and d, I always prefer to play songs the way the actual guitarist plays them, but that’s just my preference.
YEEEAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!
you're paranoid if you think one sounds better than the other 😂
The only advantage of the Gibson is the nicer looking fretboard
I like the brighter tone of the epiphone
I’m digging the sound out of the Epiphone.
It ripped bro now supernaut
Interestingly the Gibson has almost humbucker type thickness while the Epi sounds more towards a normal single coil
Honestly like the Epiphone more
I’ve owned both and I can honestly say tone wise the Gibson is fuller and sounds slightly brighter but my epiphone sg special p-90 was amazing and I really feel it was more versatile and I enjoyed playing it more??
I'd like to try those Iommi signature pickups in a Explorer.
Could we have a comparison of these with the Iommi signature models (the black ones with the cross inlays?)
Wow I’m near live guitars fairly often and I didn’t expect that less of a difference. Epiphone is like ford while Gibson like Lincoln (less so yk). But like they gotta make a common man guitar (or car) to keep the fancy stuff alive lol.
When did they move the strap button from the back?
Dunno, but if it fixes the neckdrop issue, it's about time. Never could understand a 2 thousand dollar guitar that's unbalanced.
Because it’s the Iommi edition
The Gibson has a great mid tone and bass behind it that the epiphone doesn't have. But it seems the epiphone has a higher treble end
I want that Gibson SG
I like the twang of the epiphone
This is not a slight on this video or our awesome friend here, but does anyone get slightly peeved at the excessive amount of ways guitar players use the word “tone”? Literally all it is is just the sound of the guitar. 😂 saying that with laughter and confusion. Anywho, still love this guy and his great videos
Diahrera colour of this modern laurel layer - it is the end
Have you guys seen the deer this winter and the change in their beautiful coats ?
My dad got me a regular epiphone sg ? Before he died in 2020 he got it for me in 2016 mines a 2016 Epiphone SG G 400 pro series? Is it a bad guitar? Like to play AC/DC or Black Sabbath on? Both are some of my fav bands! Or to learn on in general?
You have to remember quality and feel tho the sound may be good but it’s still cheaper and they’re both worth their price
Usually in these kind of videos I can’t tell a difference but the epiphone here definitely sounds more thin and brittle. More like a telecaster single coil than a p90
New pickups in the Epi and you’ve saved yourself some rent money
They sound the same to me. Both cool tho!!
The Epiphone had a lot more of that signature p90 sound thst he had
I wonder if you backed the tone knob on the Epiphone off a bit could you take some of the brightness off and get it closer to the Gibson?
I am leaning toward the Epi's tone.
Too much treb Broski .Love the SGs
Names make the money!!!
Does it come with the gift fingers?
The sound of gibson are more density in medium and bass but is really little bit. I have the gibson sg 64 tony Iommi with hat plot, border frets in binding and i buy more for the collection than more sound 😅 but she play really good and the epiphone too....
Damn near identical!
Please get your ears checked
Gibson fanboy alert. ⚠️
@@castleanthrax1833 If you think they sound the same or near identical, i honestly don't think you have the ears of a guitarist.
@@djent1448 And you don't have the eyes of someone capable of reading. Where did I say anything about the sound of these guitars?
even through my phone I can hear how much better the Gibson sounds especially on the thick riffs like iron man
active pickups will make any pos Gibson or epiphone sound awesome. if all
Gibson has the low end, but the Epi with an eq would work. PS love the format and editing
What are the differences between the two?
As Glen would say. Is the F*ing speaker!!!!!!!
I actually
Liked the Epiphone tone way more on every clip
Well, I guess that's a WELL money saver then
Epiphone sounds like it has more distinct treble. Gives the illusion that the Gibson is thicker. Nothing that couldn’t be fixed with the adjustment of the bass and mid knobs.
The EP sounds more "bitey" like a tele.
Cool
Gimme the look of the gibson but epi sound
Epiphone is a cool name ✌🤘
The epiphone sounds like a bit more raw
I have the Gibson Sg Epiphone and the Gibson Sg Standard the standard sounds so much clearer and better thicker and heavier actially
The Epiphone has a very clear punch and attack, while the Gibson is more rounded and darker sounding.
No discernible difference. Save your money people and stop caring about brand names!
Epiphone all Day
The epiphone sounded sharper. Sounded like single coils.
I personally like the Gibson better. It sounds 10-20% heavier to me. But things can be modified, I guess. And I'd wanna hear the Brian Robertson edition before I made any decisions 😅
What was he playing after war pigs?
Doesn’t really matter, the sound is in your hands .
I'll take the Epi and upgrade the pickups at a time to be specified later. Over and out
Weird how the epiphone sounded so much clearer
I like them both the same I have a hearing aid
Epiphone for sure
I close my eyes and I can’t tell the difference
What are the names of the songs he played tho
Why does the epiphone sound better? 😂
I hear as if the notes on Gibson are more beautiful separated on the string🫤
what's the name of the song for the 1st riff?
I am Iron man.
@@castleanthrax1833 thank you!
@@mikesperrey Np, I got there in the end.
Epiphone sounded a lot like live in paris
Would be cool to compare them in the mix. I bet epiphone will be more readable than Gibson
