  • Dagan shows us the 8 songs that are ALWAYS played in guitar stores. Turns out it's not 'Stairway To Heaven' anymore!
In this very tongue in cheek video, Dagan shows us some of the most overplayed songs he's seen whilst working in PMT. Please note - we ACTIVELY encourage you to play these songs! They are great songs to hone your skills, learn new tracks and test out the sound of amps and guitars. They are great songs that we LOVE to hear you play, so keep doing it and keep pushing yourself to learn new songs!
Check out the honourable mentions too! We've all played these songs at some point on our journey.
Bonus points if you get the Tool album name correct ;)
    0:00 - Intro
    0:25 - No Stairway?! Denied!
    1:29 - Pinch Of Salt Disclaimer ;)
    2:23 - Gear Used
    2:59 - 'Slow Dancing' - John Mayer
    4:48 - 'Do I Wanna Know?' - Arctic Monkeys
    6:15 - 'Crazy Train' - Ozzy Osbourne
    7:10 - 'Can't Stop' - Red Hot Chilli Peppers
8:19 - 'Seven Nation Army' - The White Stripes
    9:35 - 'Iron Man' - Black Sabbath
    10:22 - 'Psycho' - Muse
    11:16 - Honourable Mentions - medley!
    12:11 - 'Schism' - Tool
13:33 - 'Higher Ground' - Red Hot Chilli Peppers
    14:44 - 'The Chain' - Fleetwood Mac
    15:39 - Final Thoughts
In this video, Dagan discusses why Stairway to Heaven is played (or not played) in guitar stores, and how learning some of these "overplayed" songs can help you really hone your skills and also help you test out how a guitar feels in your hands.
Did you know we hear John Mayer a lot in guitar stores? Did you know that 'Schism' by Tool and 'The Chain' by Fleetwood Mac are almost always played by bass players trying out gear?
In this fun video, we've rounded up the most overplayed songs that are actually some of the best riffs to play on guitar. They might not be the easiest riffs to play on guitar, but they're certainly the best songs to play when you're just starting out as they help you learn new skills whilst you're just starting out!
We also answer that great question - "is 'Stairway To Heaven' banned in guitar Stores?" paying homage to Music Is Win.

I’ve only tried out guitars in a store once, a few weeks ago, and it was a much more terrifying experience than I expected. Nervous, hands sweaty and shaking, forgetting every song or riff I know-and to make matters worse the guy plugged me into an amp that I didn’t know how to use and walked away (I’ve never used a real amp). Not pleasant.

Just watched this and as a bass player and funk lover feel like I need to make sure that people know Higher Ground was written by Stevie Wonder. Now, no doubt everyone knows Red Hot Chili Pepper's iconic version and Flea's awesome bass line, but in the original, the bass lick is actually a Moog.

I never learned the one string version of Iron Man. I didn't even know there was one until now. I learned to play it with two finger power cords. It was the first song I learned to play all the way through.

I think you’ve been playing the song wrong then because only the verse is played with power chords. During the chorus when ozzy starts singing iommi isn’t playing power chords he’s just playing single notes.

But now it’s almost anything from Cinderella or any of the old metal bands from the 80’s like Lizzy Borden, autograph, quiet riot, White lion, twisted Sister or Yngwies old stuff from eclipse and those albums with real songs.

Great video, many people are intimidated playing guitars in music stores & not just because the guys that work in these shops are pretty tasty on guitar but if you only know 3 chords or none it doesn't matter because we've all gotta start somewhere & these music shop guys know this, so my advice is just have a go & bollox to what anyone else thinks

Funny how things have changed. In the 70’s and 80’s when I was starting to build my collection it was Stairway. Or Smoke On The Water, usually played very wrong. My go to song was always Rock The Nation by Montrose. And my bass go to was Boogie Oogie Oogie by A Taste Of Honey or Geraldine And John by Joe Jackson. Graham Maby and Janice Johnson kill it. Thanks for video.

Tbh. as a bass player striking those 3 riffs gives me a pretty good idea of the guitar- they cover playing down the neck, up the neck, slap, pick... summed up they also cover all strings (I'd probably go for a different slap song. Forget me nots by Patrice Rushen for example)

One of my favourite simple bass riffs to play in a store is Switch 625. I don't know if I'd call it overplayed... I've never worked in a guitar store. But the last time I played at a Long & McQuade in Toronto, I heard a guy in the guitar section around the corner join in, so I kept playing.

I've been working fulltime at a guitar store for a couple years and I can attest to the validity of this list! You don't hear Stairway as often as you think because it's actually requires a little bit of skill. It's not for beginners! The pretender by Foo Fighters is one I hear a lot, and nobody ever plays past the intro.

Yesterday I went to a guitar store and I tested out an amp for the first time I was so nervous to play my foot was shaking looking back I know I shouldn't have been but I was, when I played that Epiphone on the Boss Katana the sound just made me smile when I played the Wherever I May Roam riff and Symphony of Destruction. Ended up buying the boss Katana amp and now looking to upgrade my guitar possibly getting a Bronze Series Warlock and upgrading the Humbuckers to possible KH Bone breakers!

I definitely think you're on to something, Dagan. The last few times I was in a guitar store I heard several guys playing "Smoke on the Water" and "Iron Man". Cool riffs, but they definitely get overplayed in the stores I visited. The other one I kept hearing was "Breakin' the Law" by the priest that is the beast (Judas Priest). Still, it's nice to see people getting into guitar playing. 🤘🤘🤘
