Frank, Secos e Molhados have recorded this album in 1973, when Brazil was under dictatorship and the lyrics were submitted to previous censure. That's why the lyrics were "hermetic".. that's why they have painted their faces too, since androginy wasn't tolerated at that time in Brazil. The singer is Ney Matogrosso, which you have already listened here with Rosa de Hiroshima.

    • @naoexistimos777
      @naoexistimos777 Před 4 lety +7

They did not paint their faces because of any political issue, Ney simply felt better incarnating a character and not being a public person 24/7, and got inspiration from Kabuki theater.
Not to say our dictatorship didn't go after artists or considered their work "obscene" - they certainly did - but what's really incredible is that Secos & Molhados were so good and so influential that they let that be transcended and accepted by the general public. Where the officers in power saw pornography, the people saw beauty and pure energy. Makes you think about the unresolved issues it takes to make someone become and uptight hypermasculine asshole, they seemed to be the only ones drawn that much to the sexual aspect of it

Frank, Ney Matogrosso is the singer. Secos e Molhados was a group formed in the early 70’s. One day, an American song producer visited Brazil back on that time and was impressived with their performance. He invited them to go to US and start an international carrer singing in English for what Ney refused and said that he wanted to continue singing in Portuguese their Brazilian songs. The producer went back to US and few month later a rock band started to appear in the show business with similar face painting. The name of the producer? Kenny Kerner. The name of the rock band? Kiss.

They painted their faces before Gene Simons (Kiss) and his group. Pretty original.

Fun fact: Rumour has it that Kiss got the idea of painting their faces black and white because their manager saw Secos & Molhados perform back in the days.

Frank, When Secos & Molhados started playing on the radio, here in Brazil, a lot of people thought it was a woman singing...in 1973, they had a 20.000 people audience on a show in Rio de Janeiro (Marcanãzinho, a sports arena, in the Maracanã complex), an audience never seen before in a Brazilian band show. Only Rick Wakeman had such an audience in Rio, 2 years later (1975). Please, try ASAS by SAGRADO CORAÇÃO DA TERRA (studio version is an awesome performance)

Abraço forte e fraterno pra você direto do Brasil.

It's quite curious you said Ney Matogrosso's voice sounds female while in another video you also pointed out Cassia Eller's sounds as a man's voice. Those make precisely the case for both singers' uniqueness and amazing talents...
So nice to see somebody discovering what was already known for us... it's like redescovering (and recovering) part of our own very soul as a nation!

Hello Frank, there is a story that an American businessman saw this band in Mexico and launched the band Kiss in the same guise, follows Ney Mattogrosso's own interview, a hug to you
Similar visuals raised rumors among Brazilian fans that the American group copied the Brazilian band - and then this was only reinforced by statements by Ney Matogrosso, such as the interview with Jornal do Brasil in 2006: “[Secos & Molhados] was already a crash in Brazil and we went to Mexico [in March 1974]. The success there was so great that we stayed another week. Billboard had published a full-page photo of us and two American businessmen wanted to take me to the USA. I declined the offer: 'I am starting a story in my country and I want to continue this'. I didn't want to end up like Carmen Miranda. They even said that my image was good, but that the sound had to be heavier. I wasn't going to change our sound because of that. We came away. About six months later Kiss started, with makeup like ours and a heavier sound ".

This is strong man. Its a political song, it´s hermetic because of the censorship in Brazil at the time (1964 to 85).
Speaks about opression and impossibility of freedom under a dictatorship and breaking the traditions of an opressive colonial life of Brazil.
The crooked ways to be happy and live a normal life when people, your young friends, are being tortured and killed and opressed by the brazilian government with the help of USA, "the north winds" dont move our mills, they just take our flour.
What matters is not to be defeated... when its impossible to win. Ney did that song to say to the military dictatorship and to the people that we, the brazilian people are not defeated, Serious corageous poetry! Helped to keep our souls alive that time.
