E vai da vida adulta, com contas a pagar, volta pra infância (espinho na mão, um corte no pé, uma febre terçã), depois as sílabas do bê-abá e termina com um bebê aprendendo a balbuciar as palavras. Isso é Bossa Nova , não se compara à nenhum ritmo no mundo, é mais uma das pérolas do Brasil como samba, sertanejo, forró, pagode, axé etc... meu país é um celeiro de musicalidade, não existe outro país com tantos ritmos musicais.

Possibly my favorite song of all time. Elis as a singer and Tom as a composer are 2 of the greatest of all time... I read a biography in English of Jobim...very low-key guy, so important to pop music history, but he remained humble throughout his life. Rave on, Holy Fool Antonio! Some night, long time ago, in Rio I was in a party just talking with Paulo, Tom's son, he told me that this song was composed shortly after a huge storm on the farm in Petrópolis near the city of Rio de Janeiro. If you liked the rhythm of this song, try listening to Chovendo na Roseira. Also a song made on the farm after a rain. I am enjoying a lot your channel. Congratulations.

One of my favorite ever!! In the 60's we listened so much music from Brazil but as well from Italy and France besides our latin American singers and Spanish, of course!! as well as American and British. Such a great mix of sounds!!

Tom Jobim is one of the best composers ever and Frank Sinatras favorit (that recorded lots of his songs). He usually sang what he did, not as a singer as those great solists that you reacts at but as a composer that was admired and came out with his songs. He as an international icon. Elis Regina is a history teller, one of our bests. She is a chameleon, can sing what she wants, she sings with swing, with passion, with joy, what she wats. And as I said, Tom is one fo the greatest.

Just a few informations: The lyric in English you were reading is the English version of the song... not the literal translation from Portuguese... but they have the same mood.
"São as águas de março fechando o verão" = "They are the waters of March closing the summer". During March, here in Rio, Brazil, it's usually rain a lot. Tom Jobim, the composer, was from Rio. And, of course, the summer ends in March in the Southern hemisphere.

Tom Jobim began to compose the song, only on guitar, in March 1972, at his farm in Poço Fundo, Rio de Janeiro. The inspiration came after a tiring day working on “Matita Perê”. Once, Tom mentioned in an interview that he composed the song at a time of great sadness. The artist was hopeless, drank a lot, complained that no one listened to his music and said he was depressed. At the time, he suffered from health problems and reflected on the completion of his projects, which conflicted with his lack of interest in everything.
Hi, Frank. The lyrics you have constitute the English version of the original song. As you mention, the song is famous and it got a highly poetical but non literal English translation. However, just like it happens with, say, the Girl from Ipanema, the Portuguese version mostly refers to other imagery and is even more beautiful than the English translation, which has also been recorded by more than one performer. But this Portuguese version with Tom and Elis is the definitive, classic recording.
The amazing english version was also written by Tom Jobim, so he used kind of the same emotions, adapting it to rhyme, not using adjectives, just verbs and substantive words. He was great both in portuguese and english :)

Tom Jobim's work go so fucking deep in the foundation of bossa nova (brazzilian jazz) all along with João Gilberto and Vinicius de Moraes in the 50's and helping cosolidanting it in the 60's.
Even having records with Sinatra and Stan Getz, taking the bossa nova from Brazil to the world.
Anyway, if possible, give Tom Jobim a chance. His performance is outstanding and his lyrics are timeless, i'm sure u gonna love it.
