Nice, this is a big help... I like this "sound sculpture" coaching. Its literally sound shapes in the air. So groovy... pat

THX for this video! You really encourage me to go on with mixing. And right now I was struggeling about eq in fact....so perfect timing! I often think...well, do I have to eq this or can I leave it as it is? So, I guess my feeling was right to leave things when it sounds right ;-)

Great video Barry! Less is definitely more with the exception of wearing or problem resonance like you said.
My experience with mic choice, bad resonance and EQ was with an AKG C214. I use it for voice-over. I had an audio engineer develop a processing chain for me. He used Waves F6 and Scheps Omni Channel in the chain.
He made a narrow Q attenuation (minus 1-2 decibel?) at 3500k.
Interestingly, the C214 has a slight boost in that area with a moderate Q.
Overall, the engineer did a great job balancing the overall frequency response. After EQ he polished it with a little saturation, further EQ to enhance and some compression.

Amen brother Barry! There are NO rules to EQ! I dont know how many times Ive heard "you typically dont want to boost/cut more than 3dB at a time" 😂. This is comical to me, especially since I mainly mix metal (and often times extreme metal). And I always try to NOT use amp sims or drum replacement (especially drum replacement). And to get the modern metal snare and kick sound its very common to both boost and cut these 10+ dB. The main difference with how I mix in comparison to what you referenced is that I approach the midrange part of the spectrum in the exact opposite manner, of course with some exceptions. But for the most part I dont mess with the 400-4k range to much and do most of my eq work outside of there. But I do it for the exact same reason. To have a strong, balanced midrange and doctor up the "feel" ranges. As you said man, "different strokes for different folks". Excellent video!

Greetings to you Barry. Interestingly I recently had an epiphany where I realised that the more EQ I used on a source, the less I actually hear that source. I now have a greater appreciation of the power of the volume fader. Be well.

I'm new to this and I have a question. Al Schmitt mentioned that he would only use one db of compression because he liked the warmth of the tubes. How do I know how many db of compression I'm using?

If it has a VU or Digital display then that is one way. Most DAW’s allow you to have a meter on gain reduction. You can also look at channel meters to judge. For him it was mostly from experience. He is my hero!

Woofiness at 200k? Haha musta meant 200hz, unless Barry’s secretly a dog. I don’t even have an interface that can process 200k, let alone an eq that has bands up there 😂

nice video - good points - There is no magic - Moreover, the performance is 90 percent. Get the performance right and minimize the mixing fixes one needs to do.

Would you like to make a video about the new Lynx studio Aurora TB3? At first glance, it's an excellent converter, but the high-quality technology creates all kinds of filter sounds. Does anybody have experience with this?

Anyone else notice a high pitched ringing in the background of this video? Not a ground loop but something strange
