    I have a John Deere 316(Onan), and I am looking to sell it to buy either a John Deere 400, or a Cub Cadet Super. Loved this video, very informative, keep up the good work.

      The service mnaul gives instruction for this. I recommend you download it, only $10. It was worth it for mine. www.bobcatmanualonline.com/downloads/john-deere-400-hydrostatic-tractor-service-repair-manual

    Any place except Maine in winter, these air cooled John Deere s with the muffler right in engine bay makes me wonder if a fiberglass muffler wrap would benefit the engine's performance and longevity.

    I have enjoyed this JD 400 Series. Just purchased one myself and am looking forward to working on it, and working with it. Could you possibly add an addendum to this video, or perhaps a new one in regards to how the PTO cable routes? Mine broke in a large rusted section right where it goes through the muffler shield after turning downward after passing over the pulley. I am unsure how it routes in relation to the muffler, exhaust pipe and clamps. I purchased a new one but I don't see any indication of how it was routed by the exhaust clamp and what it possibly was rubbing. Thanks!

    Great video. I don’t think the grill is supposed to bolt in, it would be the only one of that general body style to do so, but more then one has fallen out and been mowed. It’s not a bad preventative measure. .

    • @owentimo
      @owentimo Před 5 lety

      Yes, it IS supposed to be bolted in. Its solid steel, not lightweight like the 318,420,430 grill

      Sparta thanks. I was actually thinking of the 200,300,312,314,316 and 317 that were made at the same time, but apparently it’s one more thing that’s only for the 400.

      If I lose belt again, I'll examine the idler assembly and go from there

    Thanks for the video buddy,, question tho.. how is that engine leaking that much oil after just being rebuilt ? There is oil all over it looks like in the video anyways , maybe im mistaken..

    • @Isavetractors
      @Isavetractors  Před 5 lety +1

      There is no oil leak. When I first hooked up the snow plow, an old hydraulic line had a leak. Even so, there is nothing covered in oil so its probably just the lighting and the camera you're seeing.

    • @PhatboyHD88

      isavetractors ahh I get it ,,yea from the video it looked wet then I saw your hands kinda greasy, thought ya might have sprung a leak somewhere,, we both know how that can happen with these older machines,, thanks for the video buddy

      Oh yea I dont remember what I was doing before I filmed this video, I was probably wrenching on something else and my hands were greasy from that.

  • @Your_Friend_Corey

    Does your idler pully have lots of back and forth play? Mine does which i'm wondering was causing one belt to not be fully engaged and kept causing the rear belt to fail within minutes. I think I've been running on only 1 belt for several years.

    • @rydplrs71
      @rydplrs71 Před 5 lety +2

      TheMastahC, that’s the failure at end of life. The pulley is softer then the shaft and becomes somewhat of a wear part. Usually 1000-1500 hours. When the pulley seems expensive look up what the shaft is.

    • @Your_Friend_Corey
      @Your_Friend_Corey Před 5 lety

      @@rydplrs71 its not so much the pully itself as the swinging bracket. If you look at this parts diagram its parts 12 and 13 which can move out of plane with the other 2 pulleys. i.imgur.com/9HA35nZr.png

    PTO belts still looked a bit loose after you adjusted the cable. The cable may be stretched out a bit and in need of replacing.

    Any ideas on how to replace the belts in a situation where there's a hydraulic pump on the front PTO shaft that refuses to slide off the shaft? We've drilled out the set screws and it still won't slide off?

    • @Isavetractors
      @Isavetractors  Před 4 lety

      I suppose you could remove the hydraulic lines leading to and from the pump then you can bring the belts around the pump and onto the pulley
