  • Every 100 hours your supposed to change the transmission and hydraulic fluid, and every 500 hours the filter gets changed, I show you how to do that on my 81 John Deere 400. Yours might be slightly different but the premise is the same.

I have the same model and it suddenly won't turn left anymore. It will go right. The bucket works fine as well. I set the bucket down and lifted it up so that the front wheels were off the ground and tried to turn it then as well. Same results, fine going right, but not left. Any thoughts on where to check? I have read that the valve gets off centered sometimes and that could cause steering issues.

Make sure your hydraulic pump is full, just because it will move the bucket doesn’t mean it has enough to steer, check for any obstructions around the knuckle, sometimes a rock will get lodged in there and can cause it to not want to turn, you could try tapping on the valves to get them unstuck, that’s about all I can think of, I had mine stick to one direction when I got it and it turned out to be low on fluid, and I also had a huge air pocket trapped in the steering ram.

I used hydrostatic oil, they sell it just about everywhere, the filter should have a number on it, I think I listed the filter number in the video, you can also go to your John Deere dealer and tell them you need the filter for the hydrostatic system and they’ll set ya up.
