Fun fact: if you want the real ending to season 1, when you have to decide Clem to shoot or leave you, if you let the timer run out, Clem will decide herself, it’s basically everything you taught Clem and you get to see it yourself because you didn’t get to decide for her
EDIT: Wow, didn't know lots of people would like this and make it top comment, thanks! Also, someone down in the replies said AJ does this exact same thing in Season 4 Ep 3 where you decide Lilly's fate, BUT... f***** Lilly, I'd make sure AJ shoots her, but fun update fact for everyone seeing this 2 years later

Answering the last question about Clem's ethnicity - she's mixed. Her dad's African-American, and her mom is at least partially East Asian. Clem was originally modelled after a Japanese game developer's daughter; which is why a lot of people think she looks more Asian than Black in the earlier games of the series.

AJ is a pretty realistic kid, their psychology for him is spot on. I know 3 year olds who can damn near speak full sentences. The way a child speaks depends on the child, he's 6, his speaking isn't abnormal, he's just ahead of others because Clem was teaching him. The way you're supposed to, it speaks to her parenting. He was born into the apocalypse so, he's always in survival mode. He wasn't around other people for most of his early development so, he doesn't know social graces. Like, him trying to keep Tenn's things, he's way behind in social development so, he goes through the "mine" phase pretty late. I actually like AJ a lot, he's written pretty well and teaching him was pretty enjoyable, like it was with Clem.

    • @RavenHaili
      @RavenHaili Před 3 lety +1021

@@ScarletStarManor Yes, exactly. I taught toddlers for years and they learn quickly. My aunts twins knew all of their numbers, shapes, colors, and a lot of speaking by the time they were 2. It all depends on the kid and how much time you're willing to spend teaching them.

I don’t see Clem becoming disabled at the end as a downer ending. Disability in the Walking Dead comics was always treated as a thing that can happen to certain characters if they live long enough and becomes a normal thing they adapt to (see Rick and Carl). Clem becoming disabled at the end can be read as further showing how far she has come in finding people she can trust and building a community that can support her and she still continue to lead and support in return. This was made pretty evident when Clem reflects that she wouldn’t last two weeks if she and AJ were still on the run on the road and AJ replies that they no longer have to run thanks to her. In many points throughout history humanity has been shown to be at its best and most compassionate when it cares and allows room for its disabled members, a theme that is very much at the heart of Walking Dead by having its two main characters - Rick and Clem - be disabled but continue to be leaders and a primary part of the community that everyone respects and cares for. Those are my thoughts.

While Clem had Lee as a father figure, to show her how to survive in this world, even if it meant some of her childlike innocence had to be taken away as a consequence, Sarah is an example of what happens if you continue to shelter your children even in the apocalypse.

But his speach wasnt unrealistic at all a lot of kids even 50 years ago spoke fully by 5..there is just no incentive for many to do so now a days so they dont. Kids in general today developed core skills later than in previous generations, because parents coddle them and or dont make the effort to develop those skills daily. Season 1 was a classic, definitely has the best cast of characters and great level of storytelling. Lee was a legend and his death was one of the most impactful I’ve ever seen, watching so many youtubers cry to it (even 2012 Pewdiepie) really had me intrigued in the game before I actually got into it. Seeing Lee’s story of redemption from criminal to caretaker as the apocalypse gives him “a new day” to start his life over is always amazing.
I agree with you on season 2 having those new details be great, I love the menu changing after you finish an episode (and its music), alongside the beautiful credit songs (all though Amid The Ruins is my least favorite of the season, its credit song “Salty Seas” is my favorite of the whole game franchise. I do also agree that the cast of new characters felt like they got pushed aside hard for Kenny, Jane and Luke (to an extent). Nick and Sarah had heavy wasted potential, both dying meaningless deaths after being saved and doing nothing. And Carlos kept switching back and forth between wanting our help and being like “You’re just a kid.” though I don’t think he was the leader, I’m pretty sure Pete was before he died then Luke took over and was the last one standing. And yes, it was confirmed that it was originally going to be Kenny vs Luke, but last minute got changed and Luke got that crappy lake death. It was however also confirmed back in the day that Kenny was originally going to be the Carver of the season and return as the main antagonist, so maybe him vs Luke only wouldve worked there. But overall Kenny’s endings to the season hit the best for sure, his sacrifice at Wellington’s gates is super emotional no matter if you stay or not.
I don’t hate season 3, and I agree with some of your points on how playing as an adult again was cool and how the supporting cast was more consistent, but it still is probably my least favorite. Season 2 holds above this one purely because season 2 has the most nostalgia for me since I remember all the hype around it while it was coming out. The storytelling in this season isn’t anythign spectacular though, and overall the story isn’t super necessary to go into season 4. Mariana was cool though, and getting to cave in the head of Badger (the bald dude who killed her) was VERY satisfying. And yeah, the translation of the season 2 choices to here...not good.
Season 4 was a breath of fresh air for me, I loved the graphical improvements and added gameplay, they really helped make the game stand out. I liked AJ, and bought into his articulate-ness because Clem probably wanted to teach him the basics faster than she learned so that he would be quicker to adapt to their world. I preferred Louis as a love interest for Clem since he offered a sense of lightheartedness that felt missing in the group since before Omid died. Yeah the Lee flashback was very well done, and Clem losing her leg was sad but at least she lived.
    I absolutely adore this series!

Jane should've been kept out from the final episode of S2, her purpose and role as a brief mentor to clem was fulfilled and it would've helped push luke a little further, as it is incredibly obvious he somehow had a thing for her and with her gone permanently we could've seen him deteriorate to the point where a confrontation with Kenny is possible, with luke pinning everyone leaving or dying on Kenny as it was Kenny's idea to break out of carvers camp plus Jane's dialogue about Sarita was hella odd since Jane hadn't even interacted with her. Lots of Jane dialogue post luke death seemed like it was intended to be his. Jane purely staying with the group because of clementine is definitely some hypocrisy as the women herself talks about attachments and how they'll drag you down and it would've been suitable for her character to stay away. Kenny vs luke would've been much more impactful as we know both men are capable of good and helping clem it would've made quite the fun match up as we have a season 1 character who was present to the end and appearing in season 2 or a new character from the start of s2 that can potentially survive into s3. If clem decides to shoot Kenny and then abandon Luke it directly goes against Lukes idea of people you can trust while still embracing what Jane had taught clem.
Season 2 suffered the most from rewrites.

Okay...I'm late to this video, but I wanted to say this - I came into this franchise shortly before Season 4 got released. I had the luxury of playing all three Seasons back-to-back. The first season was so emotional and a roller coaster. The characters were more "alive" and like you said, we got invested in them more so when they died, it hit harder. I'm still reeling from Lee.... The St. Johns - I had this feeling right away that's what was going on, but it was still disturbing to watch it unfold. Katjaa going out as she did....that shocked me. I still can't believe it sometimes. The Stranger I think was the best villain of the series - because in a way, he wasn't really a "villain", but just someone who got pushed into such a role.
When I came into this fandom, I was told four things - Lee is awesome, people are split over Kenny/Jane, Season 2 was the best (at that point) and we didn't talk about ANF. For the longest time, I felt I was in the minority - I couldn't stand Season 2; to me, it was the weakest of the series. And when I simply shared that, I got so much hate for it. The characters are so bland, Kenny is alive (somehow), and this season divided people over AJ (some even wanted Telltale to kill him off so Clem could be "free"). Apparently, according to the original devs, Season 2's cast was meant to not survive - any of them - which is why so many of them died off so quickly and why we're not really given any background to them. And originally, Kenny was meant to be the big bad, but along the way, Carver got created and since Kenny was already factored in pretty heavily, they just changed his purpose.
ANF - the hate for this season boils down to two reasons, and both of them are kinda the same, really - we're not playing as Clem, but Javi. That's really about 90% of the hate for the season. The rest is how it doesn't feel like "your Clem". That's what got thrown out a lot when ANF debuted originally apparently. Also yes, how the first two episodes are really just one cut up into two parts. Tripp/Ava's death was so....wasteful, really. Eleanore did such a 180, it was almost as bad as Rebecca's. Kate sort of throwing herself at you, and Javi really not minding it felt sometimes is an issue. I get David is meant to be built up as some sort of jerk since the world has gone to Hell, and they have been traveling together for so long now without any sort of sign or word from David, at some point....it happens more often that people like to admit I think. Not defending it, just making sure both sides are pointed out. So, comparing Seasons 2 and 3 - I agree that Season 3 is the better season. It's just a slight detour to ensure Clem is alive before her final arc I think. Still better with more fleshed out characters than Season 2. And yes, Mariana was a treasure.
With Season 4, we weren't even sure if we were going to get Episodes 3 and 4 initially. Briefly, when it comes to AJ's age - having worked with K - 2 for about eight years, while you *can* encounter a child who's that cognizant, it is *highly* rare so yeah, it's hard to believe he's only 5 a lot of the time in this season. I had to keep questioning if he really was 5 and not say....7 or 8. And Clem being 16 by the time Done Running starts? Ehh...she's more like 16-18 in my opinion, which would put AJ about 5-7. And people really were divided over Violet/Louis. I liked Louis, but, I *knew* what happened to him was going to happen sooner or later. Same with Tenn; loved Tenn, but Jesus.....it was bound to happen. I cried seeing Lee again - and a few didn't like how Clem had this "attachment" to him (in the community I was part of), most loved the touching farewell. I know I did; it kind of felt like it validated how we "raised" Clem to this point. Now, the final ending - Clem surviving divided the fan base as well - so many wanted her to die, so many in fact were angry that she lived, they felt "cheated", for whatever reason. A few even said that Telltale "chickened out on a proper ending" and requested Skydance correct the mistake. There's always going to be those edgelords that require a "grimdark" ending to everything they play. That said, Season 4 is where it's at.
Sorry for the wall of text - I just don't get a chance to discuss this franchise much anymore. Not without being made fun of for how I didn't like Season 2 and felt ANF was "okay".

There IS one thing I absolutely loved in Season 2 and it was Carver's death. Not the fact that he was killed, but how it at least TRIES to connect narratively; A choice you're given when this happens is wether Clem gets to watch him die or leave. I don't think it's meant to just give players a choice of wether they want to watch a gruesome death or not, but to somehow put some layer on Clem. Clem probably gets used to violence and bloodshed one way or another, but to give us a scene where it all started was a good idea. That moment really did feel like a defining moment of Clem's life, something that would change her forever.

Season 2 would have been vastly improved if the bandits who attacked Clem in the first episode were Carver and his crew. It would have introduced us to him earlier on, and the question of what happened to Crista would be lingering throughout the season. Was she dead? Was she adopted into his gang? It would be a mystery to keep you interested and keep Clem from simply walking away from the whole situation.
Similar to Javi trying to get justice for his niece throughout Season 3, Clem trying to get her back to Crista. Before he is killed, Carver would claim she joined them and went on a run with others a while back, and so Clem would have some agency in where they go, but neither Kenny nor Jane believe what Carver told her. In the end, whomever she is with, she comes across Crista's dead body along with the other runners. The season would start with the loss of a loved one, and end with it, and it would both harden Clementine into realising that no one is ever safe (maybe she even did something stupid and childish, being a child and all, at the very start, which led to bandits to them, and so she learns about responsibility or something) but it also softens her to the understanding that she should appreciate who she's with when she's with them, helping in her becoming a mother figure to the baby.
Also, if it had been Crista's baby (and I think my math might be right here), then it would be two or three during the events of Season 2, meaning it would be young enough to still be very young, but old enough to not just be a newborn baby. This could be done by having Crista and the toddler disappear at the start, and all through the season we get flashbacks to Clementine with Crista helping the baby, reminding us of their bonds and what Clementine want's to get back to, and in the final episode, we find Crista dead but the toddler still alive, and Clem can take him and keep raising him. This would both give a better connection between them (going all the way back to Lee in Season 1 where he met the pregnant Crista) and it would mean by the time the Final Season rolls around, the child would be exactly eight years old, allowing them to be the age Clementine was while having Clementine herself still be basically a child (about sixteen or seventeen) so she still fits in the school and young people setting of the season.
I also found it strange that they mostly ignored the fact that she was a girl for most of it. Season 2 especially feels like it should have dealt more with aspects of womanhood, a coming-of-age tale, since she's around the age that she'd be hitting puberty and it ends with her basically becoming a kind of mother to a child. The game is more than happy to show this girl getting her arm torn open and sewn back up but they couldn't seem to spare any time for discussing having periods in the apocalypse or have some interesting game mechanics to show the effect of hormones (like choices being more chaotic or the illusion of free will, which Telltale became notorious for, being an actual part of the story since at moments she may be driven by her emotions, you know, how most teenagers act). It would have also massively aided in humanizing Clementine and giving her more personality, rather than just following the nearest person and keeping quiet most of the time.

Her dad is very visibly a black male in the photo they have in the house (also explaining why she mistook Lee for her father when he first came into her house), but her mom is a mystery. A latest statement was that she’s fully black, but the VA and creators of S1 said she’s Blasian, so there you go as the best answer.
AND, in case you don’t know, Telltale got “revived” last year by LCG Entertainment (Telltale is now a new company with the old name) and The Wolf Among Us 2 was announced at the 2019 Game Awards. “Telltale 2.0” (as a lot of people call it) is partnering with Adhoc Studios to make the long awaited sequel. Adhoc is formed by ex-Telltale employees, primarily those who made the first game which is great, and based on the teaser, they got old voice actors back as well. So if you cared about Bigby Wolf, get hyped for next year!

I remember when this series was so hyped to the point where people lead me to believe that literally every choice mattered and there was a thousand ways this story to unfold. Season 2s multiple ending really pushed this idea into my head but unfortunately videos games don't work that way. Games are much more linear and self contained as we can't just have an A.I system that will develop a multiverse story with infinite alternate time lines for you in a digital world. That's impossible but as a kid in 2012 my imagination for how this game worked was way out of left field. Still though Tell Tale really lost focus on developing too many projects at and ran themselves to the ground. With Wolf Among Us 2 announced things are about to get crazy!

None of the choices really carried over from Season 1 or to Season 3. It definitely capitalized on the bleakness of the apocalypse, but not much else. But it was the first connection I really had with a video game character as a kid and from there it spread to many others like Joel, Ellie, Shepherd from ME, Ethan Winters from RE7 and 8, Kratos from God of War, etc. After TWD and as I got older I connected more to characters I played as and with and it really solidified my love for gaming today. I totally agree, I grew up with Clem. As a young girl, seeing clem was amazing. Watching her grow up, was like watching a more badass version of me grow up.
Season 1 was the best, the characters were good, Glenn cameo, plot was very nice, choices did matter for clem. Season 1 is legendary, this was the season that MADE apocoliyptic grizzled father figure/(queer) founding daughter figure without parents a thing. At least in video games like this.
Season 2, was messy but pretty good. Apparently the whole season was scraped though. Like it was supposed to be super, super dark. Kenny was to be Carver, Amid the Ruins was supposed to involve the 400 days group jumping us, not Russians. Tavia would die in ep 3 which was originally titled 'In Cold Blood.' Rebecca would give birth that episode and die. Clem and bec would get beaten by Troy. Jane and Sarita, Walter and Matthew never existed. Nick was supposed to live till end of ep 4, Mike would be one of the guys who jumped Christa at the beginning. Also it would show Christa's abortion scene. Clem gots shot in the shoulder/arm by Winston, falling into the river is a death scene. Sam the dog would be a pet for Kenny, Kenny would burn Luke's cabin down, and before that Troy would show up, asking Clem really pedophilic questions. Vince and Wyatt try to help us get out, along with Bonnie. Sarah, Carlos, Rebecca, Alvin, and Nick would all be dead by ep 5. Leaving only AJ, Clem, Kenny, Troy, and Luke. I think there was supposed go be a satanic cult or something, Episode 5 was supposed to be titled 'Better To Sleep,' and the cover was Clem holding AJ by herself in the distance, her silhouette visible. They would all try to go to Wellington and Kenny would train them to be solders along the way. Troy would betray Kenny's plans and get Clem alone, proceeding to Molest her in the snow, which would result in the player killing him. Then she would go back to Kenny and Luke who are fighting, not Jane and Kenny. Luke is bit and Kenny tries to kill him, Luke kills Kenny, Clem has to put down Luke before he turns. She does. Then it's just her an AJ searching for Wellington in the blizzard, they find out its fake and are dying of hyperthermia. Clem sees a light and tries to go for it, but AJ is slowing her down. The last choice in the game is leave AJ in the snow, or sit with him. Either way, you both die. Hence the title, 'Better To Sleep.' Better to be dead than alive in this situation. But this was all too dark and the management wanted a Season 3 so they scraped it.
Season 3 was pretty well, I thought it was very overhated. I liked it. I just hated the fact that our only love interest was Kate and not Jesus or something. Since Javi is bisexual and Jesus is gay. Plus gabe sucked and was annoying. I hated him. Kate was a hoe, and Elanore was a Traitor. But hey, we got a Jesus cameo and a realistic relationship between two envious brothers.
Season 4 was amazing, just felt so rushed. Which makes sense, but overall, I loved it. I loved how the game highlighted clem's growth in character, even her Sexuality. As she is also confirmed to be bisexual. The blasian queen herself. And I loved how smoothly it ran, and how AJ truly is ALWAYS listening.
Overall the game is a fucking masterpiece. And this is amazing storytelling.
Lee and Clem WALKED, CRIED, BLED, and SUFFERED so Ellie and Joel can RUN, LAUGH, HEAL, and LOVE.

    • @gianni50725
      @gianni50725 Před 2 lety

That was seriously the plot for season 2? They just wanted to kill everyone off? It sounded half-decent until you got to Episode 5, it just sounds like a sort-of repeat of Season 1 Episode 5 (everyone dies including the main character, everyone turns on each other).
Honestly I think they dropped the ball hard after season one. None of the new characters I cared much about besides maybe Luke. Almost none of their deaths hit as hard as even the minor characters' deaths in Season 1 (Mark, Chuck, even Shaun). Multiple characters were total misses as far as your choices (Nick and Sarah, and never forget, **the entire cast of 400 Days**) -- and this is REALLY when people started getting mad about your choices no mattering, including me.
Playing as Clementine was an interesting novelty but it was disappointing that nobody cared too much about your opinion and you had essentially zero strength. This is realistic, but it's not what I want to do as a protagonist. People valued Lee's input and he was an absolute truck when it came to killing zombies. The former is especially important in a game that allegedly cares about your choices.
Killing off Omid and Christa (technically Christa's fate is unknown, but essentially dead for story purposes) was a massive waste. She should have filled the role of Rebecca and it would have made us care about AJ (OJ?) infinitely more, and her death would hit 1000x harder. Omid's death was OK I suppose but it never paid off much besides a cheap emotional moment to start off the game. We're basically made to forget about him with Christa gone 10 minutes later.
Basically, the game felt like a massive pile of wasted potential and disappointment. I'm glad a lot of people liked it, but the flaws are glaring looking at it now. I think people were still not over the pastiche and emulation of Season 1, although by episode 3's end I was no longer looking forward to the conclusion.
