- 2019 Trek Stache 7 ride and review. This is a hard tail 29+ bike that seems to make everything FUN! I'm riding at Tom May's Park near the Franklin Mountain State Park just outside El Paso, TX. It's dry, rocky and loose. I did manage to find one of the 60 some odd days a year when it rains so please forgive the wind noise from the 30-40 mph winds during the ride! This bike was the most FUN I've had on a bike in years! I may have to get one!

Very good review 👍
Thanks, Israel 👊👍
I just returned this bike after renting it for a weekend and this review is exactly how I felt about this bike. I can't remember the last time I had so much fun on a bike.
So I just found you….and I like what I see. I have a 2016 Trek Stache and I love it. I’ll be 60 this year so there is shit that I just don’t do anymore (takes to long to heal) but I love my Stache. I’ve had it on ST, gravel, mud, rain and snow (being from Illinios) and it eats it all up. Can’t wait to watch more of your videos! Thanks
The Stache family keeps getting my attention, especially the Full Stache 8. I keep hearing nothing but great things about the stache bikes. your videos are super chill, and you get straight to the point.
Thanks! I have not tried the Full Stache but it looks like a fun monster truck machine. THIS bike was a blast and I really want to try it out again on some jumps.
Weird how the full stache has a significantly longer reach than the stache hardtail
Trek has this bike discounted $600. I’m going to order one tomorrow! Thank you for your review! Great video!
Hope you enjoy it! That's a great deal on a crazy fun bike👊
Started on a Roscoe 8, went to a YT Capra 27.5, then got a Santa Cruz Hightower LT CC XO1 build. Just bought a brand new 2019 Stache 5 for a little over a grand at a shop that's going out of business. Can't wait to pick it up Wednesday although I'm afraid I'm going to like it so much that I'm going to upgrade the groupset, brakes, wheels, and fork and never get on my Santa Cruz again. Only thing I'm disappointed about is that it doesn't come in Cobra Blood like the 7, that color is so awesome.
That’s a steal! Nice! Ha, I think your SC is safe😁 Stache is a whole different animal, not a lot of overlap with the Hightower. Just ride it for a while before you swap stuff out. The ‘fun factor’ makes up for a lot of $$$ on the bike👊🏻
I love my stache!
Me too bro. Favorite bike for those just want to have fun days.
Looks like somebody in Trek heard you talking about bikepacking on this bike...
Trek 1120
Nice vídeo ! Greetings from northwestern shore of Spain and sorry for my sloppy English
Yeah, if it had mounts on the fork and stays it would be perfect. Comfortable and efficient. Also, your English is better than most of us here in the States :-)
@@TrailBreaker Thanks man! Keep riding and showing us good stuff. Duro a los pedales, vamos!!!
Great review. Thanks. Considering picking one up.
Harry V Thanks! I just rode one again this weekend in Bentonville and it was even more fun there! Look for the video soon 👍👊 Have you ridden one yet?
My next bike.
Thanks for the review. I’m 67 and thinking of getting this bike. My last bike was a giant anthem 29er . Took a stache 7 for just a parking lot ride today . I fit well on it as it was a large but I need an xl . Still it fit better than any other large I’ve ever been on which are usually too small for me . Even many xl’s are a bit small so I’d really like an xl in this bike .
Hugh Snyder I’m 6’ and this large ran consistent for me. I have a same size Fuel and felt right at home. Try an XL and let me know😀
The lack of tires
I switched to the Santa Cruz chameleon ,love it
Yeah, not a lot of options in a 29 3.0 but it’s soooo fun!
Iv had my 2019 Stache 7 for over a year now, i had to change out to carbon rims, due to cracking the factory set, but i love my bike
last name You, my Friend, are either careless or over-riding this bike. Bravo👊🏻👍🏻
I love my Stache! Only bummer, super limited on finding alternative tires in 2.8 or 3"... so far just Maxxis
Yeah, probably not much market for that size. Maybe more in time😀
Surley makes some good tires in 3". Check out the dirt wizard.
@@Mikem0 Cool! Found them! :-]
WTB, Terravail, Innova, Etc Here is a good resource bikepacking.com/gear/29-tires-list/
Love my satche!!!!
Sooo fun! 👊👍
Are you open to a hard tail? What do you ride? Let me know!
Yes years ago I had a Scott 29er hardtail. It was a base model but for what it was I liked it . Then I got a giant anthem 29er which I sold over a year ago. Now I’m thinking of getting this Stache as for the money it’s a good bike and I kind of like the hardtail thing for most of the trails I ride .
Hugh Snyder you’ll love it! Soooo fun!
For sure I’m open to a hardtail. My next bike Will be a hardtail for sure. I ride a 2007 Trek Fuel ex 5, a future Classic 😂😂 , but my next bike is between this Stache, the Orbea Laufey and ( Maybe a bit more badass) a Commençal Meta AM HT. Which one do you guys like most?
@@Dd_chill That Meta looks bad ass!
Just got the Stache 7 and love it!! Great review! ;)
Great review. I’m on an 18 year old Jamis FS but love the idea of a hardtail and have been looking at the Stache a lot. I ride all single track in CT and I’m wondering if this could be my only bike? I’m not doing any crazy downhill. Curious your thoughts if this could replace what I have now.
Alex White I think so. Try one out and you’ll love it. Those trails in the video were pretty rough and was actually comfortable. Let me know what you decide 👍👊
Awesome. Thanks for the feedback. Will definitely let you know!
Got my Stache 7 and love it! Only been out a few times and I’m getting the tire pressures dialed in. So far the bike is a blast and I really look forward to getting on it. Thanks for your help with the decision process!
Alex White Awesome! What pressure are you at? I think folks are running these 3.0 tires in the low teens for best traction. The bike in the video was a demo and therefore tubes with 20-something psi and was still incredible. Really happy to help even a little👊🏻
Started at 15psi and then lowered to 14 and actually noticed a difference...very smooth over the roots and rocks. Will try 13 just for comparison because as you mentioned that seems about the sweet spot from everyone’s comments on this bike.
This was too pricey for me but I had my eye on it for awhile, bought a Wilier 503X Plus instead (2018). They weigh basically the same (50g difference).
jairdabrini yeah, may be tough to justify $ for a hardtail but this was a really fun bike and made me feel like a kid on my bmx 😀
I love my 2016 stache. I only wish it had a 1x12
It's super easy to convert
My bike shop says the cost would be around $2600
That's insane! Here's my Amazon Affiliate link for the Sram Eagle 12 speed groupset without the crank amzn.to/37pSsyq for $418. Here's a link to the crank fro $135 amzn.to/2KPgzNg. What's your current drivetrain? 2x10, 2x11 or something else? If the rear cog is only 10 speed, 12 may not fit BUT I've ridden 1x10 wide range cogs that were really good (NX) and wouldn't require you to swap your rear wheel if the free hub isn't wide enough. Plus they're cheaper now. Either way it's something you can replace for way less than $2600👊Let me know!
Thx for the review, what size bike did you test (how tall are you) Im worried that the medium runs small (Im about 5 9)
Pretty sure it was a large. I’m 6’ and it’s perfect
Am 5,9 yu think a medium/ large its good for me or a large?
Great review very informative. Currently debating on buying this bike or the 2020 Santa Cruz Chamaleon would like to know your opinion thanks.
Thanks, JP! That's tough! Are you gonna run it with 29" wheels? I haven't ridding the Chameleon. From what I've read, the geo is similar with a little more fork travel (Stache has a beefy 120 mm fork) and can maybe hold 2.6" tires. Some reviewers complain about ride quality and confidence on rocky descents. Those 3.0 tires on the Stache are sooo fun! On this video, it was a rental with tubes and a lot more psi than you'd ever run tubeless and it was still awesome! If you're riding is more XC style with flow and long days probably the SC. If it's more playful then Stache for me. Let me know what you choose. Thanks!
Thanks for the advice really appreciated!
I picked up a 2019 stache 5, what upgrades should I do? I was thinking about going down to 2.6 maybe the xr4. Or maybe keep the 3.0, but still do the xr4. Any stache experts out there?
Run it stock for a while. Keep the 3.0s since that’s what makes the Stache so fun. Maybe an air shaft swap to increase the travel to 130 of 140 since it’s fairly steep HTA and more squish on your only suspension should be nice.
Why have they discontinued this bike?
It's a shame for sure
How is your pf bb , make noise yet ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, or how many times have you had it fixed
Wallyedmonds Nope! Quiet as a church mouse. Changed it thus Winter and it’s been great👍
Did you feel the back kick out though ? Hardtail on rocky terrain
Marty Bee As long as I kept my weight centered and stood tall the back wheel tracked true and stayed planted. Too far forward and spin out. Too far back and front would wander or come up. Plus you gotta spin steady circles and avoid “jack hammering”. I was very impressed in how it performed!
Trail Breaker yeah the jack hammering is what got me hurt on HT downhill
$2600 for a hardtail and it comes with a nx. The sad thing is that the nx is no longer the bottom of the barrel so can they "justify" this on a bike in this price range.
s14tat Prolly paying a little for the Trek name. NX is, to me, very close to GX. GX is lighter and the shifter is more precise. I have both and don’t care. I think the spec is pretty good and not “Santa Cruz” priced😁
@@TrailBreaker it's not the shifter that suck, it's the weight of the cassette and not being backwards compatible with a xd driver.
Is the bike ok for XC?
Normadic N I guess you CAN but it’s a little heavy to be competitive imho. It is comfortable to ride all day though👍
@@TrailBreaker thanks
2600$?!?!?!? İ just saw it in treks official website for just 889€
Buy it!!!!
Is it good at climibing?
john nagy Ha! Did you watch the video? 😁
Yes but I mean climbs like a real mountain steep climbs , this is bike very capable like hardtail Enduro or it will be slower?
john nagy it is a really good climber in both technical rocky steep climbs or longer more sustained climbs. Really good grip and the steep seat tube angle keeps the weight centered over the bike so you don’t spin out. Hope this helps!
Thank you
