Its so incredibly overpriced for that though, just play grisly salvage and mill yourself for a third of the cost if you want to fill your graveyard. Or play an actual wheel if you want to discard

I can see drastic revelation being good in a grixis re- animator deck or grixis madness deck in commander and as for wishful thinking I can see that being ok or good in a nekusar deck or a dimir control deck or some sort of a weird colored black discard themed deck with blue in it or any control deck that runs blue and black in it or any graveyard shenanigans running deck in commander that runs blue and black
Drastic Revelation actually seems really good with Madness effects. Plus, have Bone Miser on the field and get ridiculous value from pitching 5 lands or something
Well, doesn’t the effect state "draw a card if you have 0 cards in hand", so it checks it while resolving it, right. It would have been different if it said (2): draw a card. (Activate this only if you have 0 cards in you hand)
@@Mizelei2012 you can ACTIVATE it multiple times. You'll only draw one card, on the first resolution. You could get really galaxy brain and discard the card to a separate ability before the next one resolves. King of Clunk.

Although you would maybe run this in a commander deck where the commander allows you to discard. But then it would still be inefficient. Also you wouldn't want to be keeping your hand empty constantly in order to take advantage
@@Mizelei2012 definitely it's a clunky and inefficient ability regardless. I always find it useful to try and find a way to turn the worst cards useful. If it was even 1 mana to activate I could see it bring breakable.

Alternatively, Blood Scrivener and Phial of Galadriel let you draw two cards per activation, as would something more orthodox like Teferi's Ageless Insight or Alhammaret's Archive.
I can see idle thoughts actually being useful though 😂 my first commander deck was yidris maelstrom wielder he’s gives you cascade for every spell casted after dealing combat damage to a player and that would fit right in for a 3 drop cascade and extra card draw when you’re dead in the water

Brilliant spectrum, i use in my Jodah archmage eternal deck. Since i "may pay WUBRG rather than paying a spells mana cost" i can actually spend 5 mana to draw 5 cards and discard 2. A little expensive for a draw spell but its on theme and digging 5 cards deep i feel like isnt terrible.
Drastic revelation actually seems really good. It doesn’t specify that you have to start with seven so it could bring you from one card to 7, than it says at random, that could be from the top of deck. Put it into a reclaim grixis deck and you’ve got yourself a synergy
My favorite counter spell to use as a draw spell is casting 0 drop memnite holding priority countering it with arcane denial. You draw three cards for a blue and a colorless next upkeep
run Wistful Thinking in your Ian Malcolm deck. Still giving a player card draw, but now you force them to discard more than they drew and you take a card from the top of their deck.
I'm working on a Quintorius, Field Historian Deck and I plan to try out Cryptex as a way to trigger his ability. I could see it being used in a similar way in a Tormod deck
Eruth, Tormented Prophet turns idle thoughts into something fantastic 😄 (she replaces all your card draw with exiling top 2 of library and being able to cast them until end of turn)

I'm surprised Armistice isn't on here. 2W for an enchantment that has an activated ability that costs 3WW and gives an opponent 3 life. For that huge cost all you get is to draw a single card.

you can stack the ability, but it won't do anything unless you empty your hand before each trigger resolves. having an empty hand is the condition for drawing the card, not for activating the ability. if you just stacked it with an empty hand, you would draw a card after it resolved the first time, and then the subsequent resolutions would do nothing, because your hand is no longer empty.

I use Idle Thoughts along with another card I'm blanking on in Mizzix because I tend to run out of cards in hand. And mana is not the issue there, since most of my spells typically cost 1 or 2 mana.
Idle Thoughts isn't a thing you just throw in a blue deck It's a build around: Mind Over Matter, a land that makes 2, Idle Thoughts will RIP through your deck
Brilliant Sprectrum does work in 4/5C decks that can make use of the discards. It's much easier to cheat creatures into play with some form of reanimation than to play then from hand
I know this is hyper specific. But I have a Tinybones deck. So someone else in my group could slot in Idle Thoughts to pay 2 and prevent getting pinged for 10 damage. Still bad, but the thought of that made me laugh.
Brilliant spectrum is really interesting when placed directly next to painful truths From the same set btw, classic rarity difference. They couldn't have at least made it discard one card?
Idle thoughts seems like a good hellbent option, especially if you have a way to make mana on castings, like Urabrask, the God of Storytelling, and the Strixhaven Dwarf that makes treasures. It would make a somewhat slow and annoying game, but with the right build, you could make 6 mana per cast and have 2 mana to draw while Hellbent.
The only good thing about Idle Thoughts is I'm pretty sure you would be able to stack the triggers. If you have a lot of mana AND empty your hand it basically just "2 mana draw a card" which is not that bad.
Cryptex would have been fine if the collect evidence cost was one or less. Then you'd be able to use it as a niche way to snipe materials that your opponent may be trying to pilfer and regularly add mana of any color with the second ability coming after exiling three cards being perfectly reasonable considering the rate of return. Collect evidence three for one mana is dumb as hell for a mana rock that cost more than 1.
That's an essence scatter + concentrate if you merely counter a 3-drop. Which is worth 6 mana. If you manage to counter a 6+ creature, then you end up drawing more than the mana value, which is not easy. I'm not saying it's good. But it's at least on-rate. Which is more than I can say about most of the ones they showcased.
with infite mana you can draw your deck until you hit more than 1 land. trhhgere is cards like that form a another mechanic . Cast a creature gain 1 for each color
Why would you not be able to activate Idle Thoughts multiple times if your hand is empty? Nothing on the card prevents you from activating multiple times before letting it resolve.

@@FishWash I don't even like painful truths. You better be using it in a non-blue deck, because it's not that great otherwise. Why lose the life? Discarding cards can actually be a huge advantage. A play it in a 5 color deck of mine that wants to reanimate things. Throw some minor dragons into the bin and reanimate them all on another turn. It pushes even further into your deck and gets rid of stuff you don't need or want in the graveyard. Losing life is usually not a benefit, but if you want that, then it becomes the better one. But more likely than not, graveyard recursion of one form or another make the spectrum a superior card for people who know how to utilize it
I think Wizards was like ooh buut what if you do some weird things and so you draw 5 CARDS from it... discard 2, it must be done. I will say that it's kinda funny if you use some sort of sphere of resilience type effects so that you can draw 5 from it, like, just so your friends can look at you in disgust.

Yknow it would be hilarious to do some sort of cursed deck where you make everyone pay more for all the spells but you don't commit scams, you just pay up... and cast Brilliant Spectrum using all 5 colors, drawing 5 then discarding 2. It's still not good, but it will be absolutely hilarious to just play these sort of garbage cards and effects in reverse 100 IQ fashion.

I've never thought of using converge cards with Jodah! You could also run Painful Truths to turn it into draw 5, lose 5 life.

In my playgroup we have the regular mulligan rule. But, if you have 1 or 0 lands in hand you can show it to everyone and mulligan it for free.

you can absolutely stack the ability on Idle Thoughts by using its ability before the previous use resolved
you can stack the ability, but it won't do anything unless you empty your hand before each trigger resolves. having an empty hand is the condition for drawing the card, not for activating the ability. if you just stacked it with an empty hand, you would draw a card after it resolved the first time, and then the subsequent resolutions would do nothing, because your hand is no longer empty.

I found Cryptex is useful in the Slime Against Humanity decks. You don't mind exiling them to help pay for another copy.
It's still 3 mana for 1 mana and nothing special, you could just play Celestice instead and draw and discard to increase your slime size

*raises up fists In comically oversized boxing gloves* Wistful Thinking IS GOOD. In Nekusar decks, any deck that uses land recursion from the graveyard, and Dimir Zombies that involve the graveyard for their main strategy. Fight me, Beezy.
Yknow it would be hilarious to do some sort of cursed deck where you make everyone pay more for all the spells but you don't commit scams, you just pay up... and cast Brilliant Spectrum using all 5 colors, drawing 5 then discarding 2. It's still not good, but it will be absolutely hilarious to just play these sort of garbage cards and effects in reverse 100 IQ fashion.
