- Lake Matheson is known as one of the most picturesque mirror lakes in the world and is one of the most beautiful places in New Zealand. Situated on the West Coast of the South Island, nature has combined exactly the right ingredients to create truly stunning reflections of New Zealand's highest peaks - Aoraki (Mount Cook) and Mount Tasman. Lake Matheson's excellent reflecting properties are due to the dark brown colour of the water - the result of organic matter leached from the humus of the forest floor. You have to see Lake Matheson's mirror lakes to believe it.

Definitely worth it if you don't mind going a bit out of the way! Lots to do in the area worth exploring
Very very nice
The best reflections we saw during our time in NZ
South Island views never failed ❤
They're the best!
Welcome to my home :)
Your home is beautiful! ❤️
Damn is this the lion king with that bird 2:34
You know these are super common in Australia right? Haha
Wow so beautiful place enjoy friend
Thanks for watching! 🙏😁
Stunning little video. Love the greenery, reflections & birdsong. Thanks for sharing. Sent it to my son's father, homesick Kiwi!
Hope he enjoys it, thanks for watching! 🙏
What a view!!!
One of the best!
These videos just how much of my own backyard I haven't explored
Get out there and experience it! 😁
Soooo beautiful! And the bird song.
Our favourite place on the West Coast 😊
Sad to think of how much the glacier has receded since I first visited in 1995. 😢
It's very sad knowing it will likely be gone in the next few decades 😭
Glad we got to experience it
What amazing views, even from the cafe!
The food from the cafe was so good too 👌
Thanks again for the beauty! And thanks DOC for your Takahe program!
Thanks for watching! 😁
The reflections are incredible! Good things come to those who wait. :)
Couldn't agree more mommy! 😊❤️
Superb photography and love the bird song . Visited the area around 40yrs ago in the pouring rain and it was beautiful then . My wish now is to bring my family over from Darwin and show them what you have shown us . Thankyou
Would have been beautiful in the pouring rain! Can't imagine what Fox glacier looked like 40 years ago 😯
@@ChrisandDanya easy walk up to the toe
Thank you guys for the videos, they’re truely stunning. I’ll make sure to add Lake Mattheson to our list when we visit NZ for the honeymoon
Definitely worth it if you're in the area! It's a bit of a journey from Wanaka, but worth it if you've got the time! Ensure you check out Franz Joseph as well
Thanks for watching ❤❤
Stunning. Patience (and beer) has its rewards!
Patience is easy as long as there's beer 😂
A pukeko also ran across our path when we were walking to the lake-in 2005,,it was windy that day,the wawes were lapping the surface, mountains in the clouds,,it was impossible to take pictures. The views from Lake Gault are awsome, thank you,Chris and Danya,
I wish you many more experiences, stay healthy.
Thanks for watching Jana! Sorry to hear you didn't get better weather during your visit 😞
We were lucky to be able to spend at least a week in each location to give ourselves the best chance for at least a bit of good weather
We chose our nice weather among the fjords in Fiordland Park, every day has its own charm!Enjoy each one!😊@@ChrisandDanya
@janakotrcova2790 sounds like you made a good choice! 😊
Three days in the camp in Te Anau, from there we made trips. The singing of birds /tui tui/and the deep starry sky, real beauty.@@ChrisandDanya
@janakotrcova2790 we've done a handful of trips into Fiordland National Park, but besides catching the ferry from the end of the Milford Track, we didn't really get a chance to explore the Fjords unfortunately. Will have to do it when we return!
At 1:33, Isn't that the worms that use bioluminescence in the dark? Would love to see a short video from you guys experiencing it :D
Yep, those are the glow worms! I tried getting some shots of them at night, but because they're so small and it's so dark, I can't get any good footage on my camera unfortunately.
We have a few shots of them in our Milford Track video
You really should ask someone to teach you how to properly use those hiking poles. They're not props. Don't take offence. They're helpful if you know how to use them.
As someone who has hiked over 2000km with hiking poles, yes I know how to use them
