Welcome back to New Zealand! Ahh the struggles of travel, they're definitely increased when it comes to campervan and vanlife adventures. It's kind of to be expected that on any large trip there's a few niggles along the way, we've made it quite far into this New Zealand road trip before really facing anything too major fortunately.
Today we're checking out the Lake Matheson Hike - hiking in NZ is a popular thing to do and this spot at Lake Matheson is worthy of a look given the mirror lake views, we just didn't get to see the. Then it's back to the campervan and on the road through the Haast Pass, which was actually pretty gentle to us considering it's known to be a challenging drive in New Zealand! Last stop, Wanaka, home for the night. We'd like to show more of Wanaka eventually, but things change and we plan on an early start to hit the road again first thing.
Reveal NZ is a 20+ part video series, so make sure you're subscribed to follow along with all episodes here: goo.gl/SWdJQH More than just taking a motorhome around New Zealand, it's about how to travel New Zealand, the top tourist spots, the hidden local gems, incredible day trips, extreme activities, amazing accommodation and a spot of wining and dining... It's about making you feel like you're along for the travels with us, so grab a drink of your poison, sit back and get ready for 5 weeks driving in a campervan hire from Auckland to The Catlins.

The whole idea of "there's no bad weather with the right gear" really speaks to my Nordic sensibilities 👍 I'm definitely loving the videos!
It's such a good way of thinking - to be honest we have let bad weather stop us in the past but not anymore!
@@DanegerAndStacey don't worry about it, as I've grown up with that mentality and I've still played that card ;)
Loving your typical "dry" Kiwi humour in those wet conditions. The cinematography amongst the "mossfoss" around Lake Matheson or Maffeson,is totally on point, bung leg and all,and even though its been 30 odd years since I did that journey,it still looks as pristine. Awesome upload guys.
Haha we see what you did there 😉 Haha how good is the mossfoss! So glad you enjoyed this one!
This was so calming and peaceful, I love the lakes, rivers, forests, and just all around adventures you’ve had so far 🥰
Thank you for all your amazingly stunning videos and for taking a fan from Cape Town along with you on your adventure travels. Safe travels and take care!
Cape Town! Oh we'd love to visit someday! Thanks for coming along on the adventure with us :)
It's always a pleasure viewing your travels. Well done beautiful ones!
Thanks Jim! Always love seeing your comments come through 😁
What a journey. Thank you for sharing the beautiful sites of New Zealand. I am so glad I found your channel. Watched your Cook Islands and past travels also. Thank you. Cheers from Philip in Melbourne.
We're so glad you found us too! We're so grateful we got in a trip to the beautiful Cook Islands before the world went pear shaped. Hope you're keeping safe & well in Melbourne :)
I just loved all the green in your hike .. and the moss forest 😍😍🌿.. so energising in the rain ..Gorgeous 🙏❤️❤️🌿🌿
The moss forest was soooo magical even in the rain! Loved it :)
Lol I love the "Moss Foss", with the rain it looks so tranquil 😃 New Zealand has such epic scenery! I'm very jealous of your journey guys!
The moss foss might be our new favourite place 😂 Hopefully one day you can retrace our steps (and visit the moss foss!!)
Looks amazing even in the rain , so atmospheric !!!
Great way to describe it!
Thanks Guys, nice video I'm enjoying amazing New Zealand with you two. 👍🤙
So happy you're enjoying NZ with us!
Absolutely beautiful landscape. I love these videos.
Aw thank you!
Fab! We stopped at almost the same spot at Lake Hawea 3 years ago....absolutely stunnig!💕 Loving your vlogs ♥️
Isn't Lake Hawea incredible! Such a great spot to stop and take it all in!
Thank you for doing a ‘challenges’ video. The inclination is always to show only the positives but it is super helpful while planning to see potential issues as well. I had wondered about Wi-Fi coverage, especially in all the remote areas. I have watched many videos and no one else has mentioned any issues. I would rather plan ahead instead of being surprised.
You're so welcome! Wifi and connection is the biggest consideration - some parks do have good wifi, others not so much. Make sure to use an app like Rankers and sometimes you can see reviews where people mention that, along with other problems or considerations
Ooo,it's so beautiful nature😍😍😍thank you for the video🤗❤❤I enjoy every time🤗👍
So happy to hear that! Thanks for watching 😁
Loving the series so far, it brings back memories of my trip around the South Island. I camped along Lake Hawea using the Campable app. You can download all the campsite information for different regions of NZ so you can view it offline when you don't have internet access.
That sounds like an awesome place to camp! We will definitely do that next time.
Walking in the rain is lovely. (Can't be doing with umbrellas though.) What fantastic places in this one and you have to have AMaaaaaaaZing on some merch immediately. Only one left now... What an adventure! Thank you.
Haha I just can't help it "AMAAAAZING" always just falls out when I see something incredible 😂 Great idea putting it on some merch!
Its been a fantastic representation of NZ, From the beaches and the food to the activities it looks superb, If i was able to travel from Scotland in 2021 i have possibly found where i want to visit, Look forward to the next video.
That's exactly how we wanted people to feel watching this series, hopefully you can make it over in 2021 😁
Can't wait for the next video!
You're in luck, it just went up!
Wow,just incredible scenery, can't wait to make it there!! Thanks for doing my trip for me guys!
Haha you're so welcome!
I farm next to Lake Matheson so get to experience this beauty every day...so lucky !
SO lucky! It's one of the most stunning parts of the country for sure :)
I love this series! Sometimes you really do take for granted what’s on your doorstep! This year I’m doing a mini road trip of my home country, Wales!
Thats so true! Definitely a positive to come out of lockdowns. We'd love to visit Wales someday :)
@@DanegerAndStacey you definitely should! New Zealand reminded me of home, very green and lots of sheep 😂
South Westland, sub-tropical rainforest and the highest annual rainfall in New Zealand. But because of this, the most amazing bush and waterfalls. Lake Matheson is stunning.
The rain definitely makes it a special place, we loved it even in the rain!
Thats an amazing video. Love to see your vlog. Keep inspiring us to make awesome video. ❤❤
Thanks so much 😁
It is truly all about the sounds 🙏🏼
So true!
Loving the awesome videos....Kia Ora
Love the positive vibes of this video!
Thanks Noelle!
Missed the blue pools when we did our van trip as well. Wanaka was one of my favourite stops, went to the Paradiso cinema and had a absolute great time. So tempted to do another Van trip down south.
Sounds like we both need to do another trip and make sure we get to the Blue Pools next time!
Ep 19! That means its almost over! NOOO! So much beauty, ok so where's the next camper van trip? UK, Norway, Sweden, USA? Ya'll are seasoned veterans now Dane and Stacy camper van world tour 2021! Looking for ward to the next one, all good things you know. Great video, safe travels cheers!
Haha a world tour!! Love that idea - Let's hope we can make that happen next year. Fingers crossed!
Love the video guyss! Those views😍😍
The views would've been even better if we could see something at Lake Matheson 😂
always relaxing
The mossfoss was beautiful! Appreciate your willingness to have an adventure even in not the nicest weather. We heard a couple whine once "is it even worth going out today?" when it was misty rain in Iceland. We couldn't believe the sentiment (especially since we were currently in an outdoor clothing store), especially since less than 30 minutes later we got our first glimpse of puffins on a beautiful black sand beach! Never let weather deter you when traveling!
I love getting to see both of your faces when you see beautiful things because you truly appreciate the beauty around you and enjoy the awesomeness of what you're experiencing.
PUFFINS!! Oh that sounds absolutely amazing and so worth getting out in the rain. Great advice, we completely agree, not worth letting a little rain ruin your experience.
@@DanegerAndStacey the puffins were amazing!! We were so excited to see them. I had to refrain from running up and down the beach shouting at everyone that they were there, haha
“It’s nice getting out in the rain and taking a walk”......lol. It’s like that 5 months out of the year where I live:)
Ooh, our attitude might change if it didn't stop raining for 5 months 😂
@@DanegerAndStacey nah. You are always positive which is just what we need. Like you- we miss foreign travel and cannot wait until this crisis passes! ❤️
I work at that cafe for 2 years but unfortunately loose my job because of covid-19 but good to see that cafe again thank you guys. It's a beautiful place and walk (on sunny day😆). Hope you enjoy rest of your trip.
Oh no, we're so sorry to hear that! Hope you're doing ok!
You are doing a great job :) Thank you big time :) !!!
Oh, that wet, wet, west coast weather ;-) I only had one day to visit Glacier Country and as I was drving down from Punakaiki that morning it rained so heavily that I had to stop for a while because even with the wipers at full speed I could hardly see the road. But 30 minutes out of Franz Josef the rain stopped and the sun started coming out. It was still cloudy when I started the walk but the closer I got to the glacier the brighter it got. The sun actually hit the glacier when I got there - five minutes later though the rain was back! It did clear again later in the day and I was actually able to do the full Lake Matheson Circle and watch the mountain peaks in twilight. Quite magical :-)
Oh that's crazy! The weather changes to rapidly down there doesnt it. Glad you got to see the glacier briefly in some sun and Lake Matheson!
It’s been a brilliant series really enjoyed the trip. But if you let Stacey hook up the electric again always plug the van in first to avoid the risk of electrocution
Great call - I have to take responsibility for that one, Dane did tell me that but I totally forgot. Good to let others know who are watching though, thank you!
Beautiful video! Thanks for sharing
Cheers guys, thanks for watching :)
The hike looks very atmospheric in the rain 😀☔
The rain made it even better! Such an amazing place :)
yep, that "camp" is right near the Tree...I stayed at the Purple Cow which is just across the park from the lake - when I was in the area... and park grounds turned into the annual A & P show .... that was last year in March, maybe didn't happen this year. Wanaka was very interesting place to be in....of course masses of overseas b/packers which maybe adds to the flavour, but still it seems many other campervans at the park with you...
There were no overseas backpackers but it was great to see so many locals hiring campervans and supporting local businesses :)
@@DanegerAndStacey the one time I wish I still had a drivers licence!
I love your videos. Thank you
You're the best! We see all your comments and can't thank you enough :)
Ohhhh!!! I was wondering where you got the graphic of the map from. Awesome!
Nothing fancy, I just draw a squiggly line on my iPad 😂
We had some bad luck plugging in our camper in Queenstown, we stayed at the Top 10 and it was our last night, and because I plugged into the site first rather than to the van first, the electrical current fused the plug to our van, so we had to drive to the rental company with the cable tucked in our window...
Uh ohhhh, you live and learn right! We were pretty lucky considering we did the same thing and didn't have any issues. Lesson learnt though!
Stunning video and the views wauw 😮 just such a shame the weather. Didnt help with the mirror image 🤦♀️. Hope your ankle ok hows your back doing with the trip long driving 🤔
Looking forward to next video. Stay safe.
His back is doing ok thankfully! He's got his lumbar support and foam roller. New video just went up, hope you enjoy it :)
I miss nz (south island) . Cant wait to get back there. I had the best steak and chips from wanaka.
Oh yummmmm!! Cant beat steak and chips!
Now, i am worried about next episode! Dan without a hat! :O
Haha not the ugly white hat - that's been banned!
Hi guys,
not sure if you're aware of an app called maps.me? You can find it in the app store, you basically download the map of the area your travelling whilst in a wifi area. Once downloaded, you can use it just like google maps. I used it last year to navigate around Bali and it was super helpful.
Sooooooo cool!
The coolest 😎
I use the microwave to check power in my holiday trailer as well, such an easy way to check.
Glad we're not the only ones!
I'm going to miss your RV adventures. I hope you'll be able to do it again somewhere else when we can travel again.
I've rolled my left ankle 7 times,it gets easier each time, but the recovery time is really quick as well, goals 😉😊
Yikes! 7 times, stay safe out there!
@@DanegerAndStacey Likewise mate .
Just back from Mt cook its Amazing
Hope you had an awesome trip :)
Stacey.....you are too busy to pamper yourself while traveling.....yet you always look so fresh....good job!
Aww too kind thank you! When you live in a campervan you just have to make it work 😂
Van Life & Travel Challenges In New Zealand | Waitomo caves
I’m continuing to absolutely LOVE your vlogs. I’ll be so upset when this series finishes. I’m dreaming of when we can return to NZ from U.K. to visit South Island. Out of interest, why is Stacey not on the van insurance? If you’d really damaged your ankle you’d have been stuck.
Aww we're getting sad they're coming to an end too but we will just have to plan in another epic adventure! We just didn't bother adding me as an additional driver because Dane prefers to drive and I prefer to navigate :)
I am loving your adventure. Do you wish you would have schedule more time for the trip
Honestly, 5 weeks in a campervan is probably our limit - but we are definitely sad the trip is coming to an end. Already planning what's next!
These apps need an off-line mode, like Spotify does,21st century problems.
So true!
Being a former Westcoaster, that weather is pretty normal lol
Haha yup we figured that was going to be the case which is why we left so many days free around this time 😂
I need to ask about that Dairy Milk... is it different to just caramel (yes, I did have to pause it to read the small print as I've never heard of moro before)
So dairy milk is just regular milk chocolate and moro is a caramel and nougat layered chocolate bar. The moro dairy milk just combines the two (sooo good!)
Ep 19👍
😍😍

How do you find the ipad ?
It's great! Found it a bit strange to write/draw on until I got a Paperlike screen protector. Now it just feels like paper and is muuuuch easier to work on.
What is that birds sound when you chose your trail? :P
Tui.
@@MopokesAdventures wOw it is pretty too! :)
Do you watch the new TAR season? :) Your fellow Kiwi is on the tv every week again :)
What's that?
@@DanegerAndStacey The Amazing race? :P
I believe there is a scandivian\icelandic saying "There is no such thing as bad weather, just being ill prepared for it " paraphrased.
That's a great saying! We like that!
@@DanegerAndStacey I found the exact saying: There's no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothes.
5th😃
Woohoo, number 1 next time!
Well it sounds like, you two wouldn't wish to travel abroad anymore :'(
Only once it's safe to (which might be a while away)
