      You'll have an awesome time! It's a great beginner/family circuit with not much elevation and beautiful open valley walking. Enjoy! 😊

      It's such a great track, you will love it!
      Consider adding the Routeburn Track for part of it and either walking back to your car via the Greenstone or the Caples track.
      Enjoy Queenstown!

    That was exceptional! Don’t know whether it’s because we’ve just come back from Kepler & Routeburn and are a tad sentimental though the footage was beautiful. The landscape continues to amaze us & you’ve captured it. Once again, you nailed it and many thanks for continuing to share....we love your videos....they’re art.

      Thanks Alan! So glad to hear you got to come over and do a couple Great Walks; it's been a long time coming!
      Did you get any of the sudden snowfall on the tracks? Been looking at some recent photos on Facebook and the Routeburn, Kepler and Milford are completely covered in deep snow!

    • @alanbrassil5074
      @alanbrassil5074 Před rokem +1

      @@ChrisandDanya Yep 2 years of waiting & false starts though definitely worth waiting for. We got blown of Luxmore on Day 2 of Kepler. Visibility down to ~30 metres, rain, some snow & very strong winds along the ridge lines. We got to Hanging Valley shelter & there were 12 other people in there all looking at each other wondering who would be first to go back out. Also encountered some snow on Routeburn heading towards Lake Mackenzie though very manageable. All up we loved it & already planning the next trip.

      Sounds like you had a proper NZ adventure! Glad you were safe and still had a great time.
      NZ is a wild country with unpredictable weather. This time last year there was barely any snow on the peaks and it barely rained for months!

    Completed this walk 2 weeks ago found it hard walking along the long rock face on the way to McKellar hut as everything on the 4 days we done it was frozen, was a breath taking walk

    • @ChrisandDanya
      @ChrisandDanya Před rokem

      I can imagine that would be pretty difficult in those conditions! Hopefully it being frozen made the boggy sections a bit firmer!

    Crickey it’s a cracking pace. Are you panning manually or is the edit program doing that please?

    • @ChrisandDanya
      @ChrisandDanya Před rokem +1

      Manually panning 99% of the time and then stabilizing it further in post. I use Panasonic cameras which generally have really good IBIS and then paired with the right lenses, benefits from their dual/sync IBIS system.
      We recently upgraded to GH6 which can shoot close to 6K, so have experimented in shooting stationary shots and then panning in post, but find it doesn't have the same feel

    Stunning scenery! Are there any shorter day walks in that area? I imagine that one could just start out on the track and then just turn around and come back after a while... which track do you think would have better scenery as a day walk - Greenstone or Caples? Thanks for the video!

    • @ChrisandDanya
      @ChrisandDanya Před rokem +1

      You're spot on, you can walk as far as you like either on the Caples or Greenstone track. It's 9 km (2-3 hours) to Mid Caples Hut, or 12km (3-5 hours) to Greenstone hut; all times are one way only.
      I personally remember enjoying Greenstone track more, but either are good. There is also several day hikes around the Glenorchy area and on the way to Greenstone & Routeburn carparks

    • @ChrisandDanya
      @ChrisandDanya Před 4 měsíci

      Trail is very well marked and you're basically just hiking up/down the valley. There is one section going over McKeller Saddle, but again it's an obvious trail and boardwalk

    • @ChrisandDanya

      Depends how much hiking experience you have. Gillespie Pass is a lot harder and has more logistics when planning. Gillespie Pass is more stunning, but Greenstone & Caples is more laid back and still beautiful

    Great video. What boots/footwear do you both choose to wear now that you've been in NZ a while?

    • @ChrisandDanya
      @ChrisandDanya Před rokem +1

      Thanks for watching Lorraine 🙂 We both currently have Lowas mainly for the waterproofing (Renegade for Chris/ Lady Light GTX for Danya). We have found that with the number of creeks and amount of rain the ability to walk straight on through and maintain dry, warm feet trump's all else. They also do a good job in the snow. We do both find there's a lack of arch support so looking at getting some insoles. We also have trail runners that we sometimes use for shorter hikes with more scramble or when we know there are significant 'over boot' river crossings.

    • @ChrisandDanya
      @ChrisandDanya Před 4 měsíci

      You're very close to the river multiple times and a few of the spots are pretty nice so could be a good spot for a swim! Just might be very cold since it is glacier fed 😅

    Another fantastic video. Nice work. The pace and flow, as with the others I've watched, is great/spot on, take your pick. I know this because I find your videos concluding sooner than expected each time. The scenery, again, beautiful. I saw in the description you took four days to do the whole thing. That seems a more relaxed pace than others you've done. Is that due to the track conditions or simply a more relaxed pace? Or am I off in that assessment entirely and in need of re-reading other descriptions?

    • @ChrisandDanya
      @ChrisandDanya Před rokem +1

      Thanks for the support and kind words John 👍 This was our first multiday hike in NZ and our first experience with huts, so we just took the DOC recommended route from hut to hut - some days were still quite long but if you camped you could possibly shorten by a day overall. There wasn't much elevation gain in this hike with McKellar saddle a mild crossing compared to most hikes we have done over here. So that may have contributed to the relaxed pace. But we were also just absolutely blown away by everything we saw so we were on the track all day 😊
