Camping Creekside | Pour-Over Coffee in the Woods | Buds'n Suds

  • This weeks episode of Small Plots brings me and a couple of buddies to the heart of the forest, where we camp along a picturesque wooded creek. I make pour-over coffee, drink some suds, and enjoy some coal-cooked cheddar jalapeno weens. There's also a dog featured in this episode, so that's nice.
    Gear featured includes the Kammok Kuhli UL tarp, Thermarest Parsec sleeping bag, Thermarest Neoair sleeping pad, and the 25L Dayruck Hidden Woodsman pack. The foldable coffee drip device is the "Snow Peak Men's Folding Coffee Drip" found on Amazon. I'm not sure why this is specifically for men, but ladies, you better avoid this dubious device; who KNOWS what could happen!
    Filmed in 4K using a GoPro Hero 8 Black in the Southern Tier of New York.

    I don’t think that’s bamboo, I believe it’s horsetail. I could totally be wrong 🤷🏻‍♀️

      This answered so many questions haha. Thanks! It's totally horsetail.

      Wildfoodsandmedicine.com had this info. "Horsetail has two spring offerings: the tan-colored fertile shoots that appear early in the season are edible. Later, the green stalks of horsetail appear as a separate plant. These can be used as medicine, but are not eaten. Young fertile shoots are considered a delicacy among many Coast Salish People." There are alot of the in my area of WA. Fun stuff.

      Can confirm that those are horsetail plants. Very cool though!

      It's horsetail. Bamboo however grows all over the world. When I read that, and realized I hadn't ever noticed it in even though i spend lots of time in the woods, I looked for it next time and found it everywhere in the woods of Oklahoma!

    I little tip for hammock camping, I'm still new to it myself. But if you turn your rain fly or tarp and put the corners along your ridge line, you get better coverage in rainy conditions.

    • @smallplots

    • @smallplots
      @smallplots  Před 3 lety +1

      Thanks, Jim! Yeah, that whole forest is like that. It has about 1000 or more years of recorded human activity ranging from Native Americans, to a Shaker settlement, to an epileptic colony, and today, a Prison sits adjacent (future stealth camp next to a prison maybe?). It was also a major shipping route at one time, with the Pennsylvania railroad and Genesee Valley Canal both running through it (in a different area from where we camped). One of my favorite forests in my general area, will definitely be returning to different areas for future videos.
