    Thank you for the feedback about my base - I agree that making the surrounding ruble glow with the energy would have been better. The funny part is that if you looked at the Yncarne from above you would see glowing runes in the center of the base. I just assumed everyone would be looking at it from above and not straight on. Regardless, I feel so grateful to have won my first Golden Demon.

      @@MrDevilFlash - That's honestly a problem with the person that put it together. You're meant to create a scene, not just put models in random areas. Most of the squad/unit pieces don't really have composition. The only one that truly did was the Imperial Guard one, which was truly flawless on every level.

    I really hate that they don't show all the pieces that were submitted. I was there and you can't get a great picture of a lot of the pieces in the glass case due to time of day reflection and glare. There is so much work put into them and all of them are inspirational, even the 'silly' ones (like the titan painted like an ice cream sundae).

      I feel the same way. I submitted a Commissar I had been working on for a very long time, just for it to get shoved to the back of the Single Miniature cabinet, behind a full other row of minis. I don't even think anyone could really see it. I didn't exactly have high hopes for winning, but it still bums me out that no one could see my hard work because it was shoved to the back of a case that you could barely see through anyway. Oh well. At least I can say I participated.

    1:03:35 that peasant running away is lowkey one of the most used gw pieces in dioramas. The giant kit it comes from is a really top-notch set, its also gave us the pointing skeleton road marker that you see everywhere, and a bunch of other really good little pieces too. Warhammer is starved for official minis of non-combatants, I've always thought they'd be well served by releasing a set that's just a bunch of similar bits to use on display pieces or bigger models. The giant kit is from 2006 and still holds up, if they do a good job they'd make a fortune

    With Erik Swinson, i think the most insane part of it is that he also regulates shadows and light within the shadows. I think, often times, judges undervalue him because it looks right. Know what i mean? It's often an issue in mini painting. Sometimes people don't understand how good someone is, cause your eye just tells you that it looks right, but your brain doesn't realise that it's all painted and takne into consideration by the painter.

    Roman: Thank you for going through all the entries. I really enjoyed all the winners. I would love to see more entries from the full show, it would make the event so much more transparent, but maybe it is not wanted. I was a little bit confused about "Diorama" and "Duel" ... they were kind of mixed up and I do not feel that all dioramas are truely dioramas, concerning that some do just look like units with just missing a model (new unit basing rules are great but make it more confusing) ... Thank you!

    Benjamin Kantor's diorama needed a slight bit of separation between the window frame pieces and his space scene - maybe an inch or even less - rather than having them on the same plane to help sell the effect. Putting it on a cyclorama wouldn't have hurt either.

    I always find peoples model choice can make a difference. I think they should say what mini/squad to use for each category and sceneries, bases and arrangement or posing of models are then up to the artist.
    Also, whilst I agree we should see other entries, I'm not a fan of loads more having badged etc. It keeps the winning as big as it should be given the level of competition. Its like my kids football who know don't keep score through fear of upsetting losing reams. If you enter you have to know you can lose. There has to be a balance.
    I agreed with almost all of the winners except the Ultramarine Dreadnought. The lighting on that from above to see the almost white through blue armour was just great technique.
    BUT, I stand by the model choice can make a huge difference. Especially for pro painters who may have painted a lot of a particular type/Army. There should also be rules around decals.
    Dude, you gave some great advice and have always inspired me to paint better with new approaches! You're also so complimentary while giving advice for improvement. Thanks for the video.

    30:00 I think there is a way of doing blue Ork and not lose automaticly: make it so the Ork is applying some kind of blue paint on it's body. You'll have to leave some green in few places but it could tell very nice story.

    @commentarytalk1446 Před rokem +4

    The Diorama Winner and Duel Winner, Open Entry and the Regiment Winner (Squad) for me were what makes for the best of these Golden Demon entries: They all did successfully to a higher level imho:
    1. Content = The imagination behind the concept
    2. Context = The models are enhanced by the bases and setting and dynamic posing
    3. Painting Skill = The skill obvious (which is beyond my ability to measure).
    I enjoyed the live-stream: The insights from someone who is an artist to the same level and how to express thoughts, impressions discursively and impartially was excellent to listen to - to talk personally while remaining impartial - That's another skill, too!
    What I like about the specific winners above is they take GW lore/ideas and bring them to like with fidelity while often adding something fresh or new to the original concept.

    Lord wise it might fit if we still had GorkaMorka around (such a fun game imo) I have a custom ork that is “mad max” Morx Gorkatansky if you will. I converted the buggy a bit and it has a bunch of the grots and snot longs that are dynamic or had cool/fun little quirks to them and made it like they were looting his car and he came back to the thieving Gits ready to kill ‘em. Had a squig I wanted to paint like his Australian cattle dog the one with the grot in his mouth. I never finished the diorama because one I don’t think my painting skills would do it justice and two I thought if I were to enter GD it’d be DQ for not being fully gw parts (with the custom piece) or something like that, but who knows maybe one day if I ever improve enough skills wise I could do it.

    I personally don't agree with the open ended evaluation/competition, although I cannot disagree that competition of this nature is easily feeding into the negative aspects of competition as a whole. I feel that it's up to GW to find ways to mitigate that and celebrate the mere fact that painters came together and dedicated so much effort to their pieces. There's more than enough material on positive reinforcement and leadership/management that would apply to something of this nature. Having all finalists' pieces online would definitely be a first step, some level of transparency (brief argumento from the judges on why the winners were chosen), and the "finalists/close call medal" are all good ideas.

    A group of 5 guys scouring a model looking for imperfections seems like a strange way to judge art. If every art competition was judged like Golden Demon all illustrations and paintings would look like perfectly rendered AI art. If miniature painting wants to be recognized as a true art form ( and I think it should) then the obsession with flawless rendering needs to take a back seat to more creative aspects of the form. Nobody goes to the Sistine Chapel for the perfectly rendered eyeballs.

      But this is Golden Demon and this is how they adjudicate their painting contest since Demon has existed. It's why it's such an esteemed award, like it or not, it is what it is. And I would say that I feel like they are much more open to more modern styles of miniature painting- just look at Kaha's wins over the past two contests; she has a very different style than typical GW heavy metal style. Ultimately, as we know, 'art' is subjective at the end of the day.

    • @nekrataali
      @nekrataali Před rokem +6

      It really holds miniature painting back that photo-realistic renderings are the only thing that wins. Miniature painters are *centuries* behind the rest of the art world and I mean that in a bad way. The INQ28/Blanchitsu movement is just Baroque and Dutch Golden Age applied to miniature painting. The rest of Warhammer is still in the late Medieval/Early Renaissance era.
      We are nowhere near the Mannerism of Titian, Impressionism of van Gogh and Monet, or the Cubism of Picasso and Braque. There's plenty of space to explore these styles and techniques within Warhammer settings. Tzeench demons in a Cubist or an Abstract Expressionism style would be totally badass. Heavy Impressionist brushstrokes can be used to simulate movement and depth.
      People rag on Modern Art (which is funny because Modernism is everything after the Renaissance and into the late 1940s going into the 1960s), but miniature painting could sure benefit from exploring something other than Hyper Realism.

      I still remember one year where one of the featured models was from a box set, I think one of the first Warhammer Quest ones, which was still on pre-order at the time I think, and hadn't been released. They'd have had to get it super early to paint one of those models to a Golden Demon standard, and the only way I know of they could do that is with GW's help explicitly, and it still bothers me to this day because it makes the whole thing feel fake.
      I mean, realistically, this is all nothing more than a big commercial for GW product anyway, but making it blatantly obvious like that and showing master-painted versions of models no one else could have possibly gotten yet, coincidentally on the eve of its release? Never found out the full context or how they got the model, but it just felt like a cheap advertisement for the new shiny coming out that GW themselves planted in there.
      It's still fun to look at painted models, but I don't and can't take this whole competition that seriously anymore. Makes you wonder what else is going on behind the scenes.
