The word antichrist it first means - IN PLACE OF CHRIST. From that view those who would see , the Pope has placed himself in that place, claiming to have power to forgive sin. He himself a sinner that needs a Saviour, claims to be sinless having the power to forgive sins. Jesus is alive and serving as our high priest in the heavenly Sanctuary. The book of Hebrews explains that very well.
The Pope claiming and actually possessing power to forgive sins (as well as all the bishops and all priests) is no prejudice to the ministry of Christ as high priest. It is Catholic understanding that Christ works through His ministers on earth. Their ministry is one of the ways (not the only way) Christ’s pleading and sprinkling of His blood (as described in Hebrews) is channeled. They are “ambassadors of Christ” who are entrusted with the “ministry of reconciliation” as Paul puts it in 2 Corinthians.
In John 23, we read how Christ breathed the Holy Spirit upon the apostles in order to forgive sins. In 2 Corinthians, Paul says he forgives anyone they forgive “in the person of Christ.” James 5 says that if a man is sick, let the elders anoint the man with oil and pray, and he will be healed AND FORGIVEN.
The Catholic belief is simply that this presbyterial office he gave to the apostles which included the power to forgive sins is something handed on to those whom the apostles would ordain, which in turn would be passed on to the next generation.
Christ is still the mystical high priest who’s blood is the source of all forgiveness. That forgiveness is just dispensed through his body, the Church. No one needs to offer blood sacrifices anymore like in the Old Testament - they need to have faith, confess, and repent. Forgiveness is free because Christ purchased it with His blood.
