What is Syntax?

  • Syntax is the law of language that determines the word order and basic sentence structure within the different languages. Each language has a specific syntax that tells the speaker and the listener which parts of the sentence come first to help them make sense of what’s being said. It’s the guidelines we use when speaking and writing so that sentences are understandable and coherent.

    There is no object in this sentence since “looks” at this point here is an intransitive verb....The boy looks outside of the window...the prepositional phrase of outside of the window functions as a adverbial phrase modifies the verb looks.....

    Along with diction, syntax is a fundamental part of written language. Syntax states the rules for using words, phrases, clauses and punctuation, specifically to form sentences. ... Correct syntax examples include word choice, matching number and tense, and placing words and phrases in the right order.

    In this sentence: The boy looks outside of the window.
    "outside of the window" should be preposition phrase and works as the adverbial phrase of the verb "looks" but not the object of the same.

      how could you say that? can you explain ? because looks is verb and outside is adverbial., but window is noun, so how can we put a noun as object of verbial or verb?

    I doubt if outside can be the object of the verb looks. Similarly, mat is the object of the preposition not the verb

      @chongkarchee Před 3 lety

      You are right..mat is the object of pre.on...since “sat” here is an intransitive verb.

    Use of full stop, comma etc. is the pattern and also sequence which is order of the language. Syntax means rules of the language.
    Languages should ideally be about communication and not conversation. Communication makes connections. Conversation makes relations.

  • @indianstylez9796
    @indianstylez9796 Před 3 lety +4

    Great work. But “outside” isn’t a noun in this sentence, and therefore not an object. Objects are usually nouns or noun phrases.
    .”Outside” is used as an adverb here, and “of the window” is a prepositional phrase - combined they form an Adverbial phrase (which is represented in sentence structure as an “A”).
    So, the correct sentence structure should be SVA not SVO.

    I am not sure 'outside of the window' and 'on the mat' are objects but adverbial phrases. In fact, you can add an object of the action in the first sentence (looked at a tree outside of the window), and not in the second where the cat sat itself.
