      It would be nice to see a 3.5 litre engine in there (we know they fit) & more modern brakes and coilovers, but it would be nice to keep the original look. It would make a great sleeper, apart from anything else.

    • @AnthonyIlstonJones
      @AnthonyIlstonJones Před 3 lety +2

      @@SuperDominic4 It was designed with a small V8 in mind, think the V8 that Rover got from Buick in the early '60s? Didn't get the V8 until well into the '90s though, so something like 25 years before it got the engine it was designed to have. The gearbox is their weak point, which is why even the V8 models were kept down to 350BHP (a 3.5 litre twin turbo V8 is capable of so much more). Some of the modern Lotus's (Lotii?) have a Toyota V6 in them, which should be a trouble-free engine if it's looked after.

      A cut above the rest 30 to 40 years ago really wasn't saying much...even cars from 20 years ago tend to benefit from suspension upgrades. The key is keeping the suspension balanced and the geometry the same (keeping caster and camber within specs etc)

      @questioner1596 Před 3 lety

      From other reviews, I understand the Esprit has a softer, comfier ride than modern Lotuses. While stiff suspension helps on smooth pavement, soft can provide more grip over rough roads because the tire follows the shape of the ground instead of bouncing over it.

    The Evora GT's V6 is fine up to 500-520hp for relatively little money and no changes to the suspension, fuel system, clutch, differential, mounts, or brakes, but asking more is certainly a problem, unless you want spring for ALL of those upgrades AND a new gearbox. A good friend of mine has a 2020 and was perfectly fine at 525hp but he got greedy, as we all do sometimes, and lunched his clutch, trans, and diff (within 2 weeks of each other in rapid succession) when he tried to push for another 50hp. I didn't understand his pressing need for more, it was already stupidly fast, since the thing weighs so little (3100lbs wet), but he surprisingly backed off and learned to love it (after paying $20k for repair parts).

We spent the rest of that summer cruising, racing, and generally getting into the car culture that was soon to die in our area due to anti-cruising laws (I also had a Chevelle). That culture is dead. It's fun to watch CZcams videos about car stuff now, and I understand the enthusiasm, but the car culture I knew died a long time ago. Yes, there is a car culture, but it isn't the same. I did drive that Lotus back in the 80's by the way, I rode in the Lambo but never got to drive it. I wish I still had my Chevelle, and I wish I still had my Shelby. I think you could totally do something on the “ bonnet” of the old Lotus. Take a look at the Corvette C6.R for inspiration. Center tunnel a little forward of the midline of the hood with slats over the outer edges closer to the fenders slightly behind the center tunnel. That would look awesome.

    Porsche 997 GT3 Cup Seats are available in carbon fiber. Reduce the depth of the dash assembly to move the knee bolsters further forward. This would visually open up the area. As for a glovebox, move it to something vertical mounted between the seats on the firewall. As for gauges, go digital, set in carbon fiber.

    Resto modding the Lotus sound like a lovely idea. Be careful with the engine, it's delicate. Overboost killed a lot of those turboed Lotus four bangers. Properly set up the Esprit can hang with just about anything but the engines do have a tendency to go pop at inopportune moments. There's a reason why Lotus went to outsourcing it's engines and the 'breathing' on them. BTW How's the Mclaren coming along?

    Just a thought for this project, a car show in the UK rebuilt a lotus (ground up) they found a manufacturer in Bridgend Wales that made a new instrument cluster that was actually an lcd screen, it displayed the original guages as standard, but was programed with different modes to have different style guages and when the car was put into revers changed to a reversing camera display. This was actually on an esprit. Might be worth a look

    Hi Freddy. I enjoy your work, please keep it up. Something you should consider is that these old mid engine cars had a huge problem with overheating. On a summer day in traffic when there's no air moving over the engine you could count on the steam rising up pretty quickly. You should look into an after market double core radiator, an engine fan or two, and perhaps AC for you. if these couldn't handle the heat in the northern states, there's no chance they will hold up in Florida. Best of luck. Tom

  • @curvs4me
    @curvs4me Před 3 lety

    Freddie, Jared knows that the Lotus 910S is a super strong block with an EXTREMELY HEAVY BOTTOM END! You can't use a 1970s designed bottom end and make power. Why you say? Because the compression height on the pistons is MASSIVE! This makes the piston extremely tall. Compression height or CH is the distance from the crown (top of the piston) to the top of the piston / gudgeon pin. The metallurgy wasn't available back then.
    I won't go any further. Modern pistons and longer connecting rods with gun drilled rod and main journals will take 30 pounds of rotating weight out of the car. Short CH modern slipper skirt pistons with 1.5mm rings will add 20hp from friction reduction alone. Bunch of companies in the UK have the components you need. You won't be able to maintain 400hp without stressing the motor out and blowing it up without touching the bottom end. Modernized it will hold 450hp all day.
    Do the Esprit justice! Modernize the internals and crankshaft oiling. Lotusbits.com 900 series engine.

    Tavarish could go with a John Players Club scheme on the Esprit. Gold ish O.Z. wheels and gold striping down the center of the hood resembling 430 Stradale. and paint the front portion of the C pillar in gold paint laterally over the roof simulating a forward swept golden roll bar over black with gold pinstripe down the side of the car. I did this in Forza 4. Just a suggestion.

    Exciting project! Hoping that the cylinder head comes back, it is ported and polished to pave the way for the upcoming power gains. I wonder if the Esprit has ABS? During your brake mods, you need to add ABS. For the exhaust, add a dual valve exhaust flap to help it achieve the Evora exhaust note?

    Drive it as it is first, you will be amazed by how it handles and accelerates. Lotus were the original giant killers of their day for a reason. Don't mess up the exterior just for the sake of it. The ride height is that way for a reason too. Upgrade brakes, gearbox and interior for sure.

    You should get front bumper and dashboard from the post 2000 models, the dashboard looks sooo much better then the first gen which yours has. Maybe the rear bumper(US version) from the final year(i believe that was 2003 or 2004) of the V8, it's designed for a center exhaust from the factory. And the final year rear lights and their surround, double round lights and a more modern look. The V8 had 18" wheels so 18's should fit on yours as well. The 3-piece model from the S4S in 18" would look sick on your Esprit. In any case, i got really excited when i discovered you were doing an Esprit. I love the Esprit, when i was young i used to have an Esprit GT3 in orange metallic. It's a real shame they are kinda forgotten about.
