Today, Tavarish brings some new hotness to the shop, in form of a 2021 Lotus Evora GT, worth nearly $120,000 to compare to the abandoned 1990 Lotus Esprit Turbo SE that we are rebuilding. Prepare to be inspired!

The reason why it only took Jared an hour to take that head off is because he's an excellent mechanic not because it was easy
Came to the comments to say this myself...
@@adamposey6985 me too lol

Exactly!
He really is a great mechanic, I mean the guy can work on any car and make it run.
We shall aproove of this restomod. But thread carefully, young padawan, for the line between nice and rice be thin.
Mice and rice
Jared: Leaves for 5 minutes
Freddie: I’m gonna ruin this car!
I’m all for the resto mod, but moreso mod the mechanical, restore the visual. This car deserves nothing less than white on white.
It would be nice to see a 3.5 litre engine in there (we know they fit) & more modern brakes and coilovers, but it would be nice to keep the original look. It would make a great sleeper, apart from anything else.
I wonder if you could fit a v6 in the esprit
@@SuperDominic4 It was designed with a small V8 in mind, think the V8 that Rover got from Buick in the early '60s? Didn't get the V8 until well into the '90s though, so something like 25 years before it got the engine it was designed to have. The gearbox is their weak point, which is why even the V8 models were kept down to 350BHP (a 3.5 litre twin turbo V8 is capable of so much more). Some of the modern Lotus's (Lotii?) have a Toyota V6 in them, which should be a trouble-free engine if it's looked after.
Yeah this video just made me sad.. I like modernizing and enhancing the internals, but the exterior is HOLY, pls don't ruin
You need to remember the old lotus was designed by 2 men in brown coats in a garden shed on Norfolk, and the modern Lotus was designed by 2 men in brown coats using a laptop in a garden shed in Norfolk...Big Difference..
That's hilarious!

@@decibel_tastic2869 There's always the possibility of bobble hats...

I thought even the older Lotus suspensions were a cut about the rest of the competition back in the day. I would drive it stock before modding the suspension on that classic Esprit. You might just like the vintage feel.
Plus modifying the suspension may ruin just-Just go through it and possibly replace bushes with something a little stiffer and sort the damping out.
@@andrewgardner9615 Like swapping the rubber bushings to poly bushings. Check out my CZcams channel. Been sick so no video this week. Should be back on next week.
Guessing that tavarish doesn’t really like vintage stuff
A cut above the rest 30 to 40 years ago really wasn't saying much...even cars from 20 years ago tend to benefit from suspension upgrades. The key is keeping the suspension balanced and the geometry the same (keeping caster and camber within specs etc)
From other reviews, I understand the Esprit has a softer, comfier ride than modern Lotuses. While stiff suspension helps on smooth pavement, soft can provide more grip over rough roads because the tire follows the shape of the ground instead of bouncing over it.
I love how Freddy always talks how he will finish a project and few months later just buy a new car, forget old projects and talks all again like nothing happened. LOL
yeah it's honestly kind of annoying. It's like when google announces they're doing something other than searching. You know it's gonna die soon
Rogério Costa : you perfectly sumed up the schtick of many youtube channels : making content without any other ambition than to have views.
This charming gentleman talks about bettering the dashboard layout of a car penned by Ital Design then Peter Stevens... that's kind of funny.
Earl Leaker, the McLaren, his 2JZ, the SC300 build, bentley continental, the Porsche turbo. The only thing I've think I've seen him finish was the Yugo, the roached BMW, and CarTrek (actually love that series). It just feels so hyper active with the car purchasing decisions
@@rontauranac We aren't gonna act like that dash doesn't look horrid. Also Freddy does finish projects, haven't you seen the Supra or Yugo? He has also come a long way with the McLaren. The guy just likes cars so he buys them.
@@ChaFairchild I'd love to see progress on Earl Leaker especially.
Remember that the Lotus Esprit was one of the most aerodynamic car's of its day.
Tavarish is too young to know stuff like that talking about fender gaps
No the Chevy Astro van was the most Arrow dynamic car ever
And one of the best driving. I’ve always enjoyed how much every Lotus I’ve driven has felt like a go kart.
Not only in its day, but in history until that point.
It's not just about drag. The Esprit is one of the very few street cars that generates down force.
Can somebody please rescue this beautiful Esprit from Freddys ricer antics? Thx.

Those Esprit wheels are cool. If you go larger they need to be custom made to look like the original. Also bare in mind the modern thin wall tyres will effect the ride. Digital dash might be a good idea (check the Car SOS Esprit).

Dont quite know how this would be riced?
I loved Jared's comment about sending off the heads; "You can do it yourself... if you happen to have 45000 dollars of machining equipment in your shop."
The Esprit responds incredibly well to modifications provided you address the weak gearbox. If you can fit a sequential or dual clutch one out of another car then you can make it as fast as you want!
Yeah the gearbox is THE weak spot in the Esprit, it's... not good to put it mildly. Putting 400HP through that thing will wreck it in a week or less. :P
The only thing weak is 5th gear. It’s a 4 speed trans with a 5th gear hanging off the back. Simple 2-3 hour mod by popping off the rear case and it’s super strong
@@mitchellkohrmann It's also very imprecise in use, the shifter feel is not good IMO. I still loved my car though, wish I still had it. I still don't think it could take 400+ HP even with that mod, but maybe I'm wrong. I'll take your word for it.
Tavarish is going to complain about the shifter, mark my words. :P
The Evora GT's V6 is fine up to 500-520hp for relatively little money and no changes to the suspension, fuel system, clutch, differential, mounts, or brakes, but asking more is certainly a problem, unless you want spring for ALL of those upgrades AND a new gearbox. A good friend of mine has a 2020 and was perfectly fine at 525hp but he got greedy, as we all do sometimes, and lunched his clutch, trans, and diff (within 2 weeks of each other in rapid succession) when he tried to push for another 50hp. I didn't understand his pressing need for more, it was already stupidly fast, since the thing weighs so little (3100lbs wet), but he surprisingly backed off and learned to love it (after paying $20k for repair parts).
Love both cars! Amazing how things have evolved over the years. Can’t wait to see the ‘new’ Esprit change during the rebuild!
Can't wait to see the end results... if you finish the project.
That's a big if.
This is by far my favorite project because I love that car, but I mean... Not only did he basically say that his heart wasn't into this project, but the front of the car is still made out of paper mache.

Sacrilegious! The elegancy of the Esprit over the kit car look of the Evora is amazing. You are doing a disservice
i rode in one of those turbo Espirit and that thing was a rocket! Fix the engine, get a new front bumper, then drive it a few days before deciding how to improve.
I think you might be a little short sighted on that trunk. Throw a few chicken nuggets, maybe a few mozzarella sticks on your way to the shop and you got dinner ready for you and Jared.

That blue would look awesome on that older lotus !
Lotus build = friggin' SWEET!
(Freddy returning the loaner car)
Dealership: Sir, where are the seats for this car?
Freddy: Seats?!? What seats?
There was a GT3 version of the 4 cylinder Esprit built in the Mid 90's. It had a full bodykit, larger alloys and a rear bumper with a small diffuser (though not a central exhaust). For the most extreme they built a GT1 V8, this has a massive diffuser, carbon everything, lots of aero etc and I would imagine the parts are still about. This would make an amazing resto mod and not need custom parts.
Not sure what is all out there for the old Lotus, but all that can be done using the aftermarket custom market. It can easily be done. All it takes is time, effort and Benjamin's! Go for it! I'll be watching!

HE GOT THE EVORA THAT'S ONE OF MY DREAM CARS!!!!!
Brings back a lot of memories. I had a buddy back in the mid 80's that has a Lotus Esprit Turbo (he had a Lambo too), I met him when I raced him with my Dodge Shelby Charger. We spent the rest of that summer cruising, racing, and generally getting into the car culture that was soon to die in our area due to anti-cruising laws (I also had a Chevelle). That culture is dead. It's fun to watch CZcams videos about car stuff now, and I understand the enthusiasm, but the car culture I knew died a long time ago. Yes, there is a car culture, but it isn't the same. I did drive that Lotus back in the 80's by the way, I rode in the Lambo but never got to drive it. I wish I still had my Chevelle, and I wish I still had my Shelby. The thing I remember most about that Lotus the most was the smell of the leather inside. Oh...and the day we met when I raced that Lotus with my Shelby...I won. :)
You are so right about no rear view! My '88 Turbo Esprit had no rear visibility. I know, because one day I took off from a red light, like a bat out of Hades. Turns out and I couldn't see that there was a GA State Patrol Trooper sitting right behind me at the light.. He got me, 88 in a 45 within a couple of blocks. Wasn't good~~~
I bet he was either thinking this guy doesn’t care or isn’t that bright lol
I did that in a box truck on the highway not allowed in the left 2 lanes got pulled over in far left , told me I wasn’t allowed in the left lane apologized and sent me on my way I get back up to high way speed and go to the second lane and he comes flying up behind me pulls me over again and comes to the window and says what the hell is wrong with you I said what I was in the 2nd lane not far left and he says I told you that I was like what are you talking about you said left lane he says no it’s the left two lanes I said well you didn’t tell me that looks at me and says get out of here don’t go back in those lanes

I thought this was Jared’s channel now.
Freddy can’t even run his channel.
The Evora is awesome, but for all its modern accoutrements, it's a liveable GT with a small rear seat. The Esprit is a no-compromises exotic. It's 44 inches high. Get this one in good shape and painted, and it will stop traffic at every street light.
Porsche 997 GT3 Cup Seats are available in carbon fiber. Reduce the depth of the dash assembly to move the knee bolsters further forward. This would visually open up the area. As for a glovebox, move it to something vertical mounted between the seats on the firewall. As for gauges, go digital, set in carbon fiber.
Freddy's channel should now really be called "Buy another new car every other day". What happened to the original Freddie who actually worked on cars and almost nearly finished projects?
Yes, focus the mods on track time improvements and comfortable driving with moderate interior stuff.
for the exhaust note. try building a custom 4 into 1 header. and in the collector route the pipes going in the engines firing order and moving clockwise. then find the right muffler.

Take the dash out, build some forms and pour foam on, then shave down to your modern desire.
I like the vision you have for this car. I loved these cars as a kid. Awesome stuff. Matt.
Having grown up with Lotus cars around I would hope that the outside appearance is kept in line with the minimalist original but it would be amazing to see what be done with more power, better brakes and some gentle tweaks to the aero package.
Swap the lotus with a 4G63 from a Mitsubishi eclipse. Literally the same size as what's in there now and highly upgradable.
Esprit looks amazing. A lightweight mods sound good, maybe a gt40 rear open style deck. Carbon fibre cloth carpet etc
Resto modding the Lotus sound like a lovely idea. Be careful with the engine, it's delicate. Overboost killed a lot of those turboed Lotus four bangers. Properly set up the Esprit can hang with just about anything but the engines do have a tendency to go pop at inopportune moments. There's a reason why Lotus went to outsourcing it's engines and the 'breathing' on them. BTW How's the Mclaren coming along?
That lotus will be like a little go-cart when he puts some real power in it. Can't wait to see how this goes
I actually thought tavarish was going to install the rebuilt head WITHOUT Jared. That would have been an awesome surprise. Instead I got to hear him say "New Hotness" in two separate videos today.
Just a thought for this project, a car show in the UK rebuilt a lotus (ground up) they found a manufacturer in Bridgend Wales that made a new instrument cluster that was actually an lcd screen, it displayed the original guages as standard, but was programed with different modes to have different style guages and when the car was put into revers changed to a reversing camera display. This was actually on an esprit. Might be worth a look
This was Car SOS series 8
Someone is in the car treking video editing mood.
Hi Tarvarish nice video 📹 and workmanship and those Lotus's
Hi Freddy. I enjoy your work, please keep it up. Something you should consider is that these old mid engine cars had a huge problem with overheating. On a summer day in traffic when there's no air moving over the engine you could count on the steam rising up pretty quickly. You should look into an after market double core radiator, an engine fan or two, and perhaps AC for you. if these couldn't handle the heat in the northern states, there's no chance they will hold up in Florida. Best of luck. Tom
Freddie, Jared knows that the Lotus 910S is a super strong block with an EXTREMELY HEAVY BOTTOM END! You can't use a 1970s designed bottom end and make power. Why you say? Because the compression height on the pistons is MASSIVE! This makes the piston extremely tall. Compression height or CH is the distance from the crown (top of the piston) to the top of the piston / gudgeon pin. The metallurgy wasn't available back then.
I won't go any further. Modern pistons and longer connecting rods with gun drilled rod and main journals will take 30 pounds of rotating weight out of the car. Short CH modern slipper skirt pistons with 1.5mm rings will add 20hp from friction reduction alone. Bunch of companies in the UK have the components you need. You won't be able to maintain 400hp without stressing the motor out and blowing it up without touching the bottom end. Modernized it will hold 450hp all day.
Do the Esprit justice! Modernize the internals and crankshaft oiling. Lotusbits.com 900 series engine.
users.ox.ac.uk/~ohare/engine.htm
While it’s not exactly fair to compare two cars that are 30 years apart in age, I enjoyed the video and look forward to your restomod. I’m a huge fan of the Esprit! What they were able to do with a 4 cyl engine in the 80s was revolutionary...
Can't wait for you to get going on the Lotus. The new one is a beautiful machine.
The centre outlet exhaust already exists for the V8. It also has a better interior and door cards. No need to reinvent the wheel. Smart idea would be to look for a smashed 2000-2003 V8 turbo and strip it for essentials
That going to be a nice lotas that's going to be a good sleeper build ❤
Tavarish could go with a John Players Club scheme on the Esprit. Gold ish O.Z. wheels and gold striping down the center of the hood resembling 430 Stradale. and paint the front portion of the C pillar in gold paint laterally over the roof simulating a forward swept golden roll bar over black with gold pinstripe down the side of the car. I did this in Forza 4. Just a suggestion.
Add NACA ducts to the bonnet. RetroMod theme compliant and will look fantastic.
Exciting project! Hoping that the cylinder head comes back, it is ported and polished to pave the way for the upcoming power gains. I wonder if the Esprit has ABS? During your brake mods, you need to add ABS. For the exhaust, add a dual valve exhaust flap to help it achieve the Evora exhaust note?
Drive it as it is first, you will be amazed by how it handles and accelerates. Lotus were the original giant killers of their day for a reason. Don't mess up the exterior just for the sake of it. The ride height is that way for a reason too. Upgrade brakes, gearbox and interior for sure.
Tavarish, I've been a subscriber for a long time now. I'm so glad you finally are building a Lotus, this is one of my favorite cars ever and one of my favorite builds you've done.
You should get front bumper and dashboard from the post 2000 models, the dashboard looks sooo much better then the first gen which yours has. Maybe the rear bumper(US version) from the final year(i believe that was 2003 or 2004) of the V8, it's designed for a center exhaust from the factory. And the final year rear lights and their surround, double round lights and a more modern look. The V8 had 18" wheels so 18's should fit on yours as well. The 3-piece model from the S4S in 18" would look sick on your Esprit. In any case, i got really excited when i discovered you were doing an Esprit. I love the Esprit, when i was young i used to have an Esprit GT3 in orange metallic. It's a real shame they are kinda forgotten about.
I am all-in for this project! Restomoding a classic exotic is way more interesting that just rebuilding a wrecked car. It’s what you built your channel on with the Gallardo.
2+2 means you can insure like a sedan, 2 seater means sports car to insurance co.
Many insurance companies will not insure 2 seat sports cars.
Also you said you like the glass rear window, what about perspex . I've done it with scoops. saved 20kg
Can't wait to see how this comes out, I love Lotus cars
Make your own carbon fibre fenders for the esprit!
Working with composites/carbon is fun and not incredibly difficult!
My favorite car in Grand Turismo on PS2 was a Lotus Esprit with a stage 4 turbo and racing rims and tires and 1109HP. It ripped. Man I’m SO excited to see how this turns out!!!! It’s literally you making my dreams of my GT car from 2003 a reality!!!
I have a Lotus Esprit 1990 SE and a Evora. Really nice cars to drive
you should add the water fins that the james bond model had, they would make parking a little difficult tho, i think they would also make the car about 2 feet wider, maybe you could have them deploy somehow
I saw a really nice Esprit V8TT on facebook this morning. I've never been wanted to be broke so badly.
Yes, brakes, tires, exhaust, cams and ECU if they haven't already been done. 40 year old exotic car stored outside, sure do the interior.
This is gonna be a beautiful build. can’t wait to see the end masterpiece
