😂😂😂😂
That's why he knows 16 languages lol
This immediately made me like this guy :D
Man, you are simply killing it with tips lately. Respect, my man!
For Japanese learners there are a lot of movie, drama and anime with the Japanese subtitles available. And it's really efficient to make progress especially with Kanji. I'm learning a lot with this way. =D .
yea, animelon and viki are both good sites too (and can be imported)
Man, thank you Steve and people at LingQ for this.
This is really really awesome. And so easy too! Thank you very much.
Ok, this Netflix extension is really motivating me to use LingQ! Steve, if you manage to make LingQ import pictures into the paragraphs, giving a sort of comic book vibe, with the already audio of the words...it would motivate me to learn for hours.
This is fantastic! Thank you, Steve and the rest of the Lingq team.
I am feeling ... I can’t describe how much respect I have for your work! Great work. I love it and have to test that out!
I downloaded an episode of a show while listening to this video for the first time. Very quick, and simple to do. Look forward to trying it out.
fantastic!太棒了,我找这个东西找了太久了。双字幕各种插件搞了个遍。超级棒的创意!
This is huge. It opens up so much compelling content. So exciting!
Super excited to try this out. Thanks Steve!
Thanks so much for the tip. Love it!👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
One small thing worth noting: often subtitles diverge, sometimes significantly, from the spoken dialogue. Depends on the language and for what purpose the subtitles are created - sometimes the subtitles are shortened in some ways or simplified slightly, or rearranged a bit, occasionally other changes happen. Just something to be aware of if you're working on listening comprehension after going through the words on LingQ.
this is a good point. No way the subtitles can totally reflect what is said in the dialogue. To me this doesn't matter. Reading the transcript, as I am now doing in Turkish, just provides me with a different kind of content, and an opportunity to learn some more words. All part of my gradual acquisition of the language. Perfection is never a realistic goal.
@@Thelinguist Absolutely agreed. I think it can even be helpful - you're hearing two usually similar ways to say the same essential ideas, which means more exposure to underlying grammar concepts and vocabulary. But I've known a few people who got confused by it when starting out, so I thought it was worth mentioning.
@lartrak I have been looking for more information on the role of these types of subtitles in language learning lately. Thanks for actually putting this into words! It doesn't seem like many people are talking about this difference between spoken dialogue and subtitles.
Wow, I was waiting for this feature. This is absolutely great news!
There is a NETFLIX audio track for the Blind which also dictates what’s occurring physically on screen. May be helpful Steve 👍🏾
Loveeee LingQ!! Totally behind the idea and approach :,)
Thank you very much Steve
I’m having trouble importing from my iPad. I used the extension on Safari. The subtitles were turned on as instructed. Only the title of the movie and description were downloaded. Not even the transcript.
Great job! I like this feature a lot!
Would be so helpful to see how it works... Like a demo showing how to hook up Netflix content and how to interface with it via LingQ. Otherwise, hard to understand fully.
Omg this is an amazing new feature!
I love when a new Steve Kaufman video shows up. I watch a lot of CZcams to learn Italian. Italian Fairie Stories is a great channel. Learn Italian with Lucretia is amazing too.
This Guy Learns Italian you need baby content for a language as close to English as Italian? Read Evola

This Guy Learns Italian I bet it will take you 2 years to get b1 in Italian
사이 I hope so. Thank you.

Greetings from Turkey 🖐️
Hi, are there any issues with copyright? And are you able to do this with other streaming services such as AmazonPrime?
Hey Steve! Thanks for the video, found it really helpful! Have you found any other interesting Turkish movies/shows on Netflix?... (I'm also learning Turkish right now)
Right now Netflix and Ted talks are my preferred sources of more advanced materials. Both of these can be imported using the browser extension. With Ted talks, which comes from CZcams, I get the sound, and I can listen to each sentence in sentence mode. This is not possible from Netflix.
You should watch Hababam Sınıfı. It is a great Turkish movie. I think you can watch it by youtube
That extension is awesome! Super happy with LinqG.
Great to hear!
@@Thelinguist hi steve! I want to ask if we can use lingq in China mainland, there appears to be some problems?
Is fantastic your english class god bless you bye best wish
Is Lingq able to import from other streaming services, namely Spotify and The Criterion Channel? I have access to French New Wave and West German New Cinema with Criterion, which I prefer over the types of films Netflix offers.
@r9000333m The subtitles are unfortunately all in English. With dvd/bluray becoming somewhat obsolete with the rise of streaming, there seems to be a void in the marketplace for accessing older films with subtitles in the native language of the film.
This is helpful but I still find the website not super intuitive, my 2nd time trying lingq and I want to be a paying customer but - where can I find how to create flashcards from an anime or netflix episode I import? Flashcards that include the original audio (and ideally a screenshot from the show).
A) I don't know how to create flashcards, so far I'm just identifying words I don't know (which honestly I could do with anki) and B) when I press the speaker I'm not getting the original audio but a computer generated thing.
You have plenty of videos on how to import episodes but once they're imported how to use the site you seem to really be lacking content. Please help.
I was curious about using LingQ for this as well, after reading around it doesn't look like they're incorporating audio from Netflix for whatever reason. Not sure if it's for copyright reasons, or if it's just a tough thing to implement the technology seamlessly. Everything I've read seems like they're just harvesting the sentences from the CC or subtitles for you to review.
I have a suggestion, you could use Quicktime player as your screen recorder, it's more reliable, free and most Macs seem to have it installed already.
Thanks, I will give that a try.
omg this so helpful!
Is it better to watch the video first then work on the site? Or the converse?
Is there a limit on the size of the subtitles file?
I was grabbing the subtitles of a film (Prime) and the LingQ addon complained about it. I forget what it actually said, now.
Amazon Prime has a ton of films and TV shows from around the world. Studying a language has given me a very good reason to stay subbed to Netflix and Amazon Prime 😁
Now, I really need to sub to LingQ!!!!
I keep on stalling!!
Subbed for 24 months!!!!
I'm excited 😁
Learn by doing 2 of my favourite things - reading and watching shows/films
I know for myself that reading is excellent for learning a language. Some years ago I translated Robin Hood from French to English and as a result, I am still able to read quite a lot of French till this day. I also did the same with The 3 Musketeers, but I do not recall completing the translation.
This time, I am learning Italian. I'll possibly switch to French once I can watch Italian shows/films with ease, and not require any translation. I'd like to learn Spanish, as I watch a LOT of Spanish shows and films, but it would make more sense to study French next, as I already have a good level of knowledge of that language. I know very little Spanish. At least with Italian and French, I have a good understanding of the grammar and pronunciation, and I do love those languages, so might as well study them before Spanish.
I'm English, but my mother is Italian, and I grew up surrounded by Italians and the Italian culture in our little area of England, but I never fully got to grips with the language.
I know Italian grammar and pronunciation, but my listening comprehension is not good at all. I think I probably have quite a large vocabulary (thousands?), and I will find out now as I start making good use of LingQ.
TV Stations from the target country is good too, usually free as well...
RTVE for spain, for anyone learning spanish.
Prefiero tv mexicana

which part about learning in lingq is the comprehnesible input part?
I started watching SUBURRA: Blood on Rome to help with my Italian. Unfortunately, they speak in mostly dialects I found out, so now just watch for enjoyment. 😀
If you're not a native speaker it's tough to get... 😅
Gioele Zanarella Phew. I don’t feel so bad. 😀
If you can find it... Watch Gamorra from Italy. Similar style show, but better and I think it actually inspired Suburra. It's also in dialect though, but you can find it with subs
hi steve i am from turkey bence türkçe öğrenmen çok tatlı videoların çok iyi
Bu Güzel video için teşekkürler:)
thats some fantastic feature
sounds great. how may i make this work in iOS on my Ipad? :)
I spy Learning Languages with Netflix extension too!
Is this available on mobile phones though ?
Steve, I listen to my Turkish podcasts for about an hour on my way to work, and in the evenings I spend around 30/45 mins on LingQ reading new material, is 1.30/45 hours a day enough to get some good ground in Turkish within the next few years?
Yesss
You should see results. Good luck.
Thanks for this. I’m new to LingQ! Does it also scrape the audio or is it just the text? Thanks in advance. Hass
Both
@@Thelinguist thanks for coming back to me. It only seems to import the target language subs... which is great, but I was wondering if the actual movie's audio is also imported? Am I missing a setting somewhere? Thanks in advance.
Does this still work?
And does it work for Greek at I get the error:
Error: No appropriate captions found. Available languages are: English, Italian, Vietnamese, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese
Steve, when you are creating known and unknown words, do you take the time to hit "Ignore word" if it's a name of a person or a weird mistranslation or something like that? Looking at your 6k known words in Turkish, how many of those are names, places, mistranslations?
As much as possible I ignore non words. I don't think many of my learned words or known are non-words or non-Turkish words
Hi Steve trying to import an italian film but Error keeps coming up as No appropriate captions found. ?? can anyone help please?
Looking to brush on my Spanish fluency and go beyond as I plan to market myself as bilingual. What do you suggest?
You know what I suggest. Lots of listening and reading and speaking. But to market yourself you will need to have other skills/experience. Being bilingual is not all that rare, just a useful asset.
I wish I could enjoy each of your wonderful tips, but I don't understand English. Ideally, in every video there would be a transcript so we could translate it and each would make the most of it for learning any language. Thank you and congratulations for your initiative 😊 I'm from Brazil
I thought CZcams provides subtitles.
@@Thelinguist
Yes CZcams generally provides subtitles, but most of them don't meet our expectations, as they are automatically generated in one language and are not reliable. And in the case of this video the subtitle appears to me in Dutch, being impossible to copy and paste to try to translate😢😢
@@fernandamagalhaes5844 You can choose from a library of subtitles, it was dutch subtitles for me as well, until I changed it
This is amazing!
No audio? I have been using flixgrab/subs2srs to grab the audio from Netflix shows or if flixgrab isn't working I have also used OBS to record the audio manually for each episode I watch. I was wondering if there is any plans to add audio to the import feature as well?
I will forward this information to our technical people. I know they tried to capture the audio and were unsuccessful.
@@Thelinguist ok thanks Steve, I have really enjoyed all of the work you and your team have done with LingQ, especially the youtube import feature. keep up the good work!
When I open the lesson up in LingQ its just a synopsis of the show in English. Like its a summary and description of the show in English. No transcript of what's actually being said in the episode. Please help
This may vary from movie to movie. So far I have had no such difficulty. Try another movie.
@@Thelinguist Hi Steve, I have tried various different movies and TV series but the same thing continues to happen. Is there someone I can email at LingQ about this?
This is a big game changer
I am using language reactor with netflix might be useful as well.
Any plans for LingQ to do some of the more endangered languages? Sicilian for example.
All depends on the availability of content in our library. This means if people step forward and translate our mini stories and record them and if there is additional content available on the Internet, we will launch that language at Lingq.
do you have to be a premium member to do this with Netflix?
does it work with other sites?
Hey steve when listening should i speed up the audio a little so my ear gets used to faster speaking because iv been listening to german for 2.months but when a native speaks to me they speak fairly faster and my ear hasnt gotten used to such speed so i was thinking if i should speed up my audio files.
I wouldn't speed anything up. Listen to a variety of content. You will get a variety of accents and speeds. When you listen, if you don't understand, read the transcript. You will eventually get used to hearing people in natural conversations. Two months is not a long period of time. Good luck.
@@Thelinguist thanks for the reply i will take your advice.
Can you upload CZcams videos and using the audios as a transcript in LinQ?
I don’t know how to get the browser extension. Does it work on an iPad?
Yes the browser extension works on my iPad.
Bonjour Steve. What is the best way according to you to learn a language x with netflix ? : audio in englidh and subtitles in x ? Of audio in x and subt in x too of audio in language x and subt in english . I have tried de three but i m still a bit confused in fact. Merci pour tes conseils !
depends on what you want to do. I watch the movies on TV with my wife. The subtitles are in English. I need the English subtitles to understand. I try to see how many words I can understand from the dialogue in Turkish. I have imported the subtitles, the Turkish subtitles, into LingQ where I studied them. This helps me acquire some of the vocabulary and helps me understand more when I watch television. If I watch the movies on my computer I usually leave the original Turkish subtitles on because I can stop the frames.
Hi, thanks for all yr tips and videos, they are so useful, I like Netflix but the only thing I don't like it's they don't have russian films for instance. Where do you usually russian films with subtitles in russian?
I suggest you check out CZcams. If you punch in the names of some of your favourite Russian films, especially Soviet era films, you will likely find them. Let me know how this works. I think they have subtitles and can be imported into LingQ. I'm not sure.
@@Thelinguist Thanks for the reply. It's funny but right now I was having a look at Netflix and there are (as every day) new films and one of them is in russian with subtitles in russian! (and other languages, of course) I couldn't believe it! and I don't believe in coincidences, should I? the film is called "Better than us" , the title is in english and perhaps it's more confusing because people may think it's a british or american movie but not, russian. I'm looking forward to watching it!
@@spanishconyolanda3814 Better than Us is Russian, the male lead is in the show Sniffer, and the female is the lead from the Method.
Both of those are on Netflix as well, method ,метод, is a favorite of mine
I only just discovered that LingQ exists and I haven't got a chance to try it yet but there are youtube channels with MASSIVE loads of Soviet-era Russian films and TV shows. It's insane! I think I subbed to a couple. I'll go get the links...
I think if you just search "Мосфильм" to start, you'll get all kinds of stuff. But also just "soviet-era films". SO much stuff comes up and a lot of it has Russian subtitles in addition to others.
I love the turkish language! It's so fun to hear them talk
Any sale for the current worldwide situation? I'd really love to subscribe long-time to LingQ but it's more expensive than Netflix and Spotify :/
There’s a 35% off sale right now - check your email if you signed up for their emails.
But aren't subtitles sometimes different through interpretations of the translator? I am a little worried that I might learn things the wrong way. Thinking of trying it but I'm not sure. Could anyone explain how exactly this works?
Yes they can be different. For instance, with some medical shows, sometimes I hear the doctor say, "Your son has a broken arm and severe headaches from the fall," but the subtitles in French will say "Your son is injured badly." Or when they say "40 over 50," it will be translated as "4 over 5" in French.
A funny one is from The Simpsons. They poked fun at the way The Simpsons looked, and the movie said they were European (if I remember correctly), but in the subtitles, it said they were French.
Thankfully it doesn't happen often, but you do feel smart when you catch these differences!
Steve, how does your french compare to Jodie Foster's? A lot of native french speakers say that she speaks almost perfect french, I'm interested in your opinion.
@@betos-08 - Jodie Foster learned French as a child. She attended Lycée Français in Los Angeles. Molly Ringwald later attended the same school. Madonna's children attend Lycée Français in New York. Yes, they will speak with a native accent.
I had a quick listen to an interview with her. Her accent is wonderful. I am sure it's better than mine.
Steve -- quick question: This is legal, right? Fair use of the captioning file?
We are not sharing these videos. We are just simplifying a process that is available to anyone, in other words to download the transcript and converted into a text file. In addition we integrate this text with the LingQ functionality, Which our learners would otherwise have to do by copying and pasting.
That is pretty awesome
this is amazing
Can you import content from lingopie?
Hey. How many time should I listen and read a mini story before I move on to the next chapter in the mini story. I have very little knowledge of the language that m trying to learn. Should I fully under stand and have the first one down before moving to the next chapter? Or should I just keeping moving though all the mini story’s to get better Exposure to the Language?
I go in groups of five. I do the first lesson, kind of understand a little bit of it but then to make things interesting I move onto the next story and soon after on to the next story. When I get to lesson number five I go back to the first one again and the second and the third and I might go through them another once or twice and then I start into the 6 to 10 series. The goal is not to understand everything or even most of it. The goal is exposure and keeping things fresh.. If you go out with some friends who speak the language you are learning, and you spend the evening with them listening, kind of understanding a little, saying the odd little bit, this is very beneficial to your language learning, even though you didn't understand most of the conversation.
Thank you. I love LingQ. It is a lot of fun and I normally get bored very easy. But I’m not getting bored of learning using it.
I found a problem with importing series from Netflix onto LingQ, I would import it and only get the subtitles in LingQ to go through the words but no audio to go along with it...How do I fix this?
Yes we can't get the audio. Netflix prevents it. Sorry.
YES!
wow I'm gonna get a premium version right now
My Man 😎👍👍
This is so cool. How people don't know that?
i just found the extension didn't work. it shows an error message saying no captions found when i was trying to import the lesson from netflix
It doesn't work for all videos. Please try another one and then you might contact support. It's supposed to work. Sorry for inconvenience.
Master Steve!
I don't see the lingq extension in the Chrome store..Was it taken down?
For some reason Chrome is taking their time doing something to process or review or something our extension. For the time being you'll either have to use Firefox or Safari or you can go to the link below and install it manually. Sorry for the inconvenience. www.lingq.com/lingq-importer-chrome-extension/
I'd like to ask what basically I can add to LingQ because you know "privacy policy". I wanted add a transcript from one episode of "The X-Files" but I'm not familiar with privacy policy. Should anyone suggest me something?
You can do whatever you want for you own use. Only if you want to share something in the library do you have to be careful about copyright issues.
@@Thelinguist Thank you Sir. I'm going to import a lot of good articles tomorrow. I have been using LingQ for one week and I'm absolutely content learning here. Greetings from Poland.
Greetings to you, and one day I will visit Poland. Glad you are enjoying LingQ.
Is there a way to break down episodes into bite size chunks? For example, a 30 minute episode into 2 minute chunks?
This is not in our plans at the moment.
Steve Kaufmann - lingosteve わかりました。お返事してくれてありがとうございます!
@@acorrin8039 you could stop the episode when you had enough
@Yoreni this is true but when I’m working and or driving it’s nice having the audio on loop so I can have a Bluetooth in and not have to touch the phone, which is why the smaller chunks are nice like the mini stories or some of the light novels on Lingq. I watch terrace house, so thirty mins on loop is of course doable lol it would be hard so I always try to eat my elephant one bite at a time :)

Hi what should I do? I used to watch to video in English one 1 hour a day and it didn't work but I increase the number to 1 to 4 hours and it seems (looks) that I am stuck again.
Are you Brazilian?
It's normal, you have to start over. Anyway, if you feel stuck, don't make it a bad thing. Get it likes a opportunity to do something different. Maybe videos don't work for you so change your method. News, music, movies, find yourself.
I have experience to watch video in English. I use configured to quick access to word definition PotPlayer to watch and pirate torrents to get video. On the start, I had about 100 unknown words per hour, after about 150 hours I had about 5 word per hour. But I like movies and show serias.
Focus on what you are able to enjoy in the language. Don't worry about your progress. It is gradual and often difficult to notice how much you are improving.
I have to watch movies or shows in Spanish but I already seen 1 million times in English so I can them and therefore translate them
Instead of binge watching Netflix I'm binging Steve Kaufmann.
Does it work on ipad ?
Yes

Is it not audio?
So far unable to capture audio from Netflix.
What cereal do you recommend? :')
Cheerios and Captin Crunch.
I just found LingQ and it looks like a really unique app. The only problem is that the free version is extremely limited and the paid version is prohibitively expensive. Twenty dollars (US) per month. I can't think of any other subscription service that expensive.
Not $20 per month. If you sign up for one month, it's 12.99 for the month. . If you sign up for 6 or 12 months, it drops to $8.00 or so, can't remember.
It’s really not that expensive. A lot of courses charge hundreds of dollars.
