"Just pull yourself together!" That's McGonagall if I've ever heard her.
La la land
It's like McGonagall freaking possessed her 😂😂
Olle Rönn I believe she said "Just purr yourself together"
I did not XD
She is me in a sense.
That woman is a British National Treasure.
+SciFiTom She's an INTERNATIONAL treasure!
+SciFiTom fuck you, she's belong to the world
+Mc Gaplec Maggie are belong to us.
+MediaMan
Even as an American, I have to agree.
While she may be beloved by other countries, she is British by birth and as a person. The same way the Great Pyramids are admired by all the world, but they are primarily Egyptian and belong to the Egyptian people. Thus, they are an Egyptian National Treasure. Logic.
+MediaMan My absolute favorite. I will be devastated the day she passes away.
She's just in total control of the audience, even though she says very little. Fascinated.
+TheVildee she put a spell on them at the start, didnt you see it ?
C3PO's Bottom Bit haha, when you mention it :)
TheVildee Absolutely! That’s a masterful performer.
Thats called charisma.
That’s called respect
She is so noble and elegant and her sarcasm has always made me laugh. What an impeccable person she is.
Indeed. ❤️
That's not sarcasm. That's wit. You don't see it much these days because so few people get it.
@@jochenstossberg5427 She's witty but her humour IS sarcastic, very common in british people.
When we find the secret to immortality, make sure she gets it first.
Here and Betty White
Safe some for David Attenborough please.
Robin Williams left us, we MUST keep her
Keanu has the secret!
@@Posiden178 Betty White is looking more frail by the month
How she says "that was nice." is so cute!😅
Ashley Smith o
Oh that was not cute, that was shady and I love it
😊
Nobody could deliver the most arrogant lines elegantly in downton abbey like Dame Maggie Smith. I adore her!
While I agree, I think Diana Rigg could give her a run for her money.
Absolutley correct. She is the cherry on top.
I thought you are a waiter 🤣🤣
She is so savage 🤣
@@SyedSaifAbbasNaqvi she read errybody for filth lol but especially Lord G
@@Lakota828 well unfortunately she's dead
can you imagine being a kid and having professor mcgonagall tell you to pull it together I'm dead
What makes older british women so hilarious ? British humor is already great but older women really have something special.
Mimosa E. We get to see them. older American actresses are more often persona non grata.
Sarcasm! Us British are very sarcastic and take the micky out of each other and insult each other in a funny way - Americans dont tend to do that.
It's because they're not afraid to laugh and joke be themselves I suppose. They don't rely on their looks for confidence. American women are more concerned with looking in control and sexy I think, so they don't loosen up so much.
Oh, no, honey. We get it and we love it.
A very astute comment.
'Just pull yourself together'
+G Sivakumar lol so funny :D
+G Sivakumar Hahaha, that is the most English thing I've ever heard anyone say. Fantastic!
She is just more McGonagall than McGonagall herself :)
Julieta YESS
Ded!
"Just pull yourself together", she is Prof. McGonegall 100 %. I love this woman. I loved her especially as Charlotte in " A Room with a View from 1998 with Helena Bonham Carter.
she was one of the only good harry potter series casts members
Devin Campbell What do you mean ? The whole Harry Potter cast is excellent.
Lovely22 Sorry i should've said best instead of good because i'm tired you can make that kind of mistake when you are tired.
To me the best in the cast are
Alan Rickman
Dame Maggie Smith
Ralph Feins
Jason Isaacs
Helena Bonham Carter
Richard Harris ( but with the old age he was at i don't think he could've handled the action scenes )
Imelda Staunton
Robbie Coltrane
Devin Campbell Ok...it was my fault for thinking along these lines. Thank you for explaining it to me.
Lovely22 you're welcome and please don't call me darling
Isn't she just delightful?
Zoe Tuinman yeah she is !
Always
Such talent, poise and grace! She is incredible!
I see what you did there.
Yessssss
i wish i had this lady in my life and had tea with her so she could just talk to me about life
Me too! I could listen to her for hours!
+Chelsea von Holst Just remember, if you meet ANYONE older than you to take a minute & listen to them.
For instance, my husband had a delightful conversation with an 88 year old man, and then the man wanted to show him how strong he was so he turned around & flashed him to show him his quads. Yup, always listen to your elders, you can get an experience you'll never forget!
+Chelsea von Holst
i had no words for the perfection of this human being
you found them
thank you
+tkmaz You are absolutely right my dear often times we forget that they have had more experience and want us to learn the values of things
She is the best actress
I love her for her honesty.
She and Ian McKellen supported our theater here in Christchurch New Zealand after it was destroyed by the earthquake in 2011.
That's really cool!
+cliffedward
Could've used Gandalf and McGonigal instead.
+gary wood i know thats cool to say that :) or sir&dame ,sir ian mckellen and dame maggie smith
Oh wow, I'm kiwi and didn't realise.
A FELLOW KIWI
maggie is such a classy, charming and well-timed comedian. I love her sweet little mischievous smile.
I just love her rye Sense of humor. A classy lady. 👏
What I love about British humor is that it is spoken in a leveled tone with a straight face.
03:24
Norton: "Have you ever watched Downton?"
Smith: Perfect combination of dramatic/comedic pause.
+YouzTube99 I liked the slight shake of her head. "I have the BOX set".
It's pretty common for actors to not watch their performances. A few actors have mentioned that a role becomes part of their life for such a long time that watching their performances is like taking their work home with them
I'd kill to have her as my grandma
would you kill her to have her as your grandma?
+Kyle Demoderpifnlikskin no.
Will Pitty k ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
Imagine having Maggie Smith AND Angela Lansbury as your grandmas 😍😍
+MrAsteris4ever Heaven!
She is marvelous. I'd be so pleased to be just half as graceful as she is when I'm her age. Gosh I love her !
Please, Graham if you ever read this comment give me an episode with Dames Maggie Smith and Judi Dench. They don't even have to promote anything, it could be just an episode of them telling stories about their careers. 🙏
Please include Dame Angela Landsbury in that episode.
Also, Helen Mirren!
Vanessa Redgrave.
CAN YOU IMAGINE ALL 5 OF THEM ON THAT COUCH??????????
Sebastian Stormborn that would be a delightful and awesome sight to have all of them talk about anything under the sun and get rid of their inhibitions
So much sass in a little more than four minutes. She's so amazing!
Maggie is a gift to humanity.
“Are you glad Downtown’s over?” “Oh yeah..” without hesitation. She’s seriously so funny!
Then the two movies.😅 🎉
No, I really am! 😂
She is brilliant.Love her sense of humor.
"A lot of very small people, kind of, use to say 'Hello' to me and that was nice"
- She's so lovely, I still love her in everything she does! Especially Harry Potter!
Me too always fan of her and Judy zDench who my daughter says reminds hrr of me
awwww. She is just too cute.
And her smile, is adorable. Very serene smile.
Dating myself, but saw Maggie Smith as Lady MacBeth to Bedford's MacBeth in Stratford, Ontario. It was this performance that tuned my into the entertainment business. Funny that several nights later, I ran into her at a pub in Stratford, and she was surrounded and protected by her group.. but she "pooh poohed" them, and invited me to sit beside her, and asked all about me, my family etc.. Saw her the following year (again in Stratford) and she recited everyone of my family's names and how was I getting along at University. Been her #1 fan ever since.
lonemale mcphee // What a lovely experience☺
Well: Is that about Dame Maggie Smith - or about yourself and your own vanity???
That is probably one of the most amazing stories I've read on youtube. I've never met her myself but I have heard through those who have, that she is incredibly down to earth.
So lovely!
Amazing
No joke, my 8 year old daughter watched the ENTIRE Downton Series because she recognised Professor McGonagall while I was watching the season 6 BluRay.
I remember seeing her as Wendy in Hook.
Me too!
+Mads D Yes!
same
+Mads D
Hook was the film that introduced me to Maggie Smith back in the 90s.
I remember being so confused during the first Harry Potter film, as to how Maggie, who already appeared older in Hook looked to have hardly aged. Wasn't until later that I found out she was made to look a lot older in Hook lol.
+Mads D Same for me! The first time I saw her I was in the 2nd grade and my teacher had us watch Hook. Still one of my favorite films to this day.
Genius Maggie sitting around talking. Nothing greater.
She's unique. Absolutely adorable. The actual soul of Downton even with the best possible cast!
she winned it all. apart from all the awards and nominations she got, she is one of the most respected and one of the few Dame actresses in UK, and she has a handsome son! also beautiful lady.
There are lots of actors who are 'Dames' in the UK. Maggie is one amongst many.
To me, Maggie Smith will always be Miss Jean Brodie. First thing I ever saw her in and was mesmerised. If you've not seen it, or seen California Suite, check them both out. You're in for a treat. A Grand Old Dame :)
+Phyl Renshaw yup, me too, both films :)
+Phyl Renshaw Brodie was such a beautiful performance. And California Suite, one of the funniest performances ever!
Travels with my Aunt is also wonderful!!!
+Phyl Renshaw Miss Brooodie and her guhls. I agree.
+scribe570 "...the cream of the crop..."
She has no idea the way we love her!
First time seeing her was as Medlock in Secret Garden. I adore her
Same here! I've loved her since then.
TheBeauty . Thanks to modern technology i both of the secret garden films and i remember her in The prime of miss Jean Brodie gosh I'm old. 😂😂😂
This lady is a human treasure.
We need more like her.
I never saw Downton Abbey either. I've seen Potter, but I've also seen her play Desdemona to Laurence Olivier's Othello in 1965. Along with a long list of other brilliant movies.
Yes, he was.
+Sam Swinnerton it was awful black face.
I remember watching her in The Secret Garden she terrified me at first. Then in Potter I enjoyed watching her :) but I've not seen Downton Abbey
U must see , she is like the best character ever !
She really is amazing! The entire series is amazing just showing you what happened and changed socially during that time.
Maggie Smith is the best..just a fantastic, fun lady. BE MY GRANDMA PLEASE
A great actress with a great personality.
dame maggie smith is the only person who can make the simplest lines or sentences hilarious....my god i love her so much....long live professor mcgonagall
Dame Down-to-Earth
myoldreteacher OMG YESSS
Honestly one of the best interviews ever, Dame Maggie is hilarious.
What's your favorite Lady Grantham insult? Mine would be "Does it ever get cold on the moral high ground?"
No englishman would ever dream of dying in somebody else's house. Especially someone they didn't even know.
"Oh, she's been reading too many novels."
"Don't be defeatist, dear. It's very middle-class."
"Do you think I might have a drink? - Oh, I'm so sorry, I thought you were a waiter."
"Oh, it is you! I thought it was a man in your clothes."
unpleasant guy mary was engaged to:' i'll never come back '
Lady Grantham: ' promise?'
"I thought you were the waiter."
"Edith, you're a lady, not Toad from Toad Hall"
"Were you really a cat?"
BEST QUESTION HAHAHA
She is just marvelous!
I love her voice :)
+Prettygirlcn5 I haven't seen any Downton episodes but thought her voice wonderful in the Potter films, and her acting in The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie.
Lady Grantham was hilarious at times!
"Put that in your pipe and smoke it!"
write2pras84 she really is one of those characters that makes a series rewatchable. You better appreciate her more subtle funny and witty moments, when you watch them for the second or third time.
Maggie Smith is such a priceless gem. She's brought so much happiness, amusement, and entertainment to my life and the lives of countless others.
I met Maggie Smith in Stratford, Ontario, in 1976; she came out of her dressing room after I "kept looking at her" and she was so down to earth, nice and friendly, shook my hand, and signed a beautiful still from THE PRIME OF MISS JEAN BRODIE for me. I will never forget her. [I knew she would become a much greater star than she was then]. If you get a chance to watch Jack Clayton's film THE LONELY PASSION OF JUDITH HEARNE [1987], Miss Smith was magnificent in it (opposite Bob Hoskins).
"I've got the box set" is the equivalent of "I haven't read the book yet but it's in my shelf"
I was so blessed as a young (14) American abroad in 1963 to see Maggie Smith in the theatrical comedy, "Mary, Mary" at the Shaftsbury Theater. She was so beautiful and witty, and I never forgot her! What a consummate actress!
I remember her from The Secret Garden and Hook.
She played Medlock in The Secret Garden and it's fantastic.
I've had the pleasure of being in the same room with Dame Maggie several times. She has a good bit of real magic about her; she's wildly intelligent and fiercely well-humored. Saw her on stage in "Lettice & Lovage" - many times, where she gave one of the all-time great comedic performances. The entire audience was on the end of her string, she could raise one eyebrow and stop the show because every person in the Barrymore Theater had just lost their marbles…. true brilliance. Before opening that show, Dame Maggie had a meeting with theatrical producers where they announced that the show would be playing at the Barrymore. Dame Maggie was adamant about not opening the show at the Barrymore because she knew that it was not a good theater for comedies. The General Manager, in an effort to appease Dame Maggie said, "But Maggie, the Barrymore has the best Star dressing room on Broadway", to which the great lady responded, "But Tyler, I won't be performing in the dressing room now, will I?" She lost that battle, but she won the Tony that year, along with all the other well deserved accolades of an epic career. If you ever come across the movie "Love, Pain and the Whole Damn Thing" (early 70's) check-it out…. you'll see Maggie as you never imagined her before. Long may she reign!
I am now to watch. Thankyou
What a lovely comment.
She looks so disgusted when he mentions Downton ...
+Rachie doodle I don't blame her.
+no hassle I don't either she pulls no punches
***** Yeah, she was in Hook, and Keeping Mum. Her most famous film is probably the Prime of Miss Jean Brodie.
+Rachie doodle I bet her accountant is happy!
+Rachie doodle She is how harisson ford feels about han solo. it is that character you might have had fun playing at one point but it wears you down and you want to quit but you can't because fans won't let you die and you eventually start hating it because people keep quoting you imitating you pestering you when all they want to do is yell bugger off.
The first thing I saw her in was The Secret Garden. I fell in love with her right then and there. That woman is just so captivating. Her presence on-screen has a way of setting the tone for an entire scene. She's just so talented.
She is the QUEEN of shade! "It's at art galleries and museums, so that limits things" SLAM
Such a lovely and charismatic lady. I've had the privelage in selling her shoes once in a boutique. A gentle soul and overall very nice.
One very classy lady! A HUGE friend of Kenneth Williams the late comedian. He mentions her a lot in his letters and diary...and rightly so.
I think it was short lived.I'm sure they had a fall out.
She and Judi Dench are amazing @_@
+SunNy ShiDae Watch Ladies in Lavender - fabulous movie with both of them!
PragueImport
hey thanks..@__@
A Room With a View (1987) also has both of them.
She has been one of the best actresses for a long long time, love her work
"I am in the business of putting old heads on young shoulders. And ALL my pupils are la crrrrreme del la crrrrreme." For all her wonderful roles and memorable performances, to me, Dame Maggie will ALWAYS be Miss Jean Brodie. One of the most well deserved Oscars in history.
Maggie Smith..Legend.
proof that maggie smith never acted in downton nor in hp
she's exactly like violet and mcgonnagal
shes still very pretty for her age isnt she? she ages very very well
She is! I love her cheekbones!
I hope that means Toby will age well too. From what I've seen thus far he's on track lol.
"Just pull yourself together!!" Oh gosh. I can't stop laughing.
"I've got the boxed set." BAAAAHAAAA!!! You can tell by the look she gives him that that question was probably NOT supposed to be asked. I LOVE HER!
Maggie Smith is possibly my favorite actress of all time!!!
"And I heard myself say, 'Just pull yourself together.'" HAHAHA Maggie Smith is amazing.
She is mesmerising. A true gem
love her in "Murder by Death" and Poirot movies
"I hope he knows how to stop that thing."
+Norbert Molenda "sicky-poo"
"I don't understand, why would someone want to steal a dead, naked body?"
"Well you see dear..." (whispers in her ear)
"Oh that's tacky. That's really tacky."
Jamessir Bensonmum!!
@@Stockmuncher Don't let him park the car dickie 😀
Maggie Smith is an absolute class act. What an asset she is, what a wit and grace! Magnificent!
Maggie Smith is such amazing actress and a beautiful classy lady too 💐💐💐💐
Anyone else looking forward to seeing her in Lady in the Van this November?
It's my only consolation since Downton is coming to an end...
+Petra Senoté I'm lucky - I work near a used DVD shop in Chicago and was able to score the first 5 seasons of Downton at greatly reduced prices, and I've pre-ordered the 6th season. All I have to do is binge-watch.
+Petra Senoté I saw that, it was great!
Maggie Smith, you Queen! ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤👑👑👑👑👑
She is simply amazing. Best actress ever. Just as hilarious off screen.
I so adore her, "It'll come to me in a minute."
"I've got the box set."
Maggie Smith is literally the Dowager but in 2015...she slays!
I love Maggie Smith. She's awesome and an incredible actress.
My introduction as a child to Maggie Smith was in 1993 when she appeared in The Secret Garden. She looks the same now as then - how is that possible?! Charming and intelligent lady.
How can someone be so sweet and at the same time such a savage?? I love her lol
This is absolutely delightful. She is just amazing. I've loved her since I was nine years old and saw "The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie" for the first time. I love that she still does that hand gesture with her hair. If you go back and look at all of her interviews, she is always pushing back her hair.
That woman will always a special place in my heart.
"I've got the box set."
Legend.
I can't believe that this is from 6 years ago!!! I'm JUST getting hip to downton abbey in 2021!
I LOVED that series.
Obviously, I'm really ancient--I remember Maggie winning the Best Actress Oscar for "The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie"--in 1967, then she won Best Supporting Actress Oscar, for "California Suite." Dame Maggie is very much like Jessica Lange, and Johnny Depp, (just to name 2)...they love the WORK, THE ACTING, but they don't or just can't watch themselves in the finished films/or TV series. Jessica Lange said she's seen 1 episode of American Horror Story...she said, "I love playing madness...if it's got 'crazy' in the part...give me the pen...sign me up...I think that's why Dame Maggie and Ms Lange and two of my favorites...that INTENSITY they bring to the screen is absolutely magical to watch.
Dame Maggie is so amazing in every role that she takes on! Love her!
She's just amazing! Her perfect sarcasm and sense of humour are delightful!
The scariest and loveliest dame ever 😂👍
I absolutely love her in Downton Abbey. I loved her as Mother Superior in Sister Acts I & II. I love that she has allowed herself to age gracefully and naturally. She looks her age, as a gracious grandmother (probably a great-grandmother) should, and should be proud of every wrinkle she's earned. The fans of Downton will eventually get over the fact that this is the final season, but it may take some time.
what about sister act and nanny mcphee ?
+Loreo Sister Act yeah!
That's right, I forgot about sister act. I first saw her in The Secret Garden in the 90s as a child. She was always memorable to me and I feel like there was more I knew her from, possibly even by that time. It's almost upsetting to me that people only know her from Harry potter lol. Wtf....
Finally someone who mentions the Secret Garden! I loved that film! She terrified me as that really strict head housekeeper. But she was fantastic.
Arnold Rivas
Such truth. She owned that role. As always.... I think a part of me always sees her as Mrs. Medlock.
Kaela Bronan Same here. On par with Minerva McGonagall.
She is just amazing. So quick witted and funny.
Ladies and gentlemen, that is an actress!
Maggie is an angel
she is the sweetest
These old British Dames... watching these interviews is complete joy. Top Class ladies. You can see this proper "old school" education, intelligence, quality, no words can describe that. Speaking so quietly, holding emotions, barely smiling: but the audience (including us youtubers) are soooo entertained, intrigued and charmed by her. I bet Kate Bekinsale and Emily Blunt will be same super charming British Dames someday, do you agree?
I love her so much.. such a genuine sweetheart.
I once read in an article that she isn't the kind of person that does interviews a lot and you can really see that here. To me she looks a bit uncomfortable at times. But her aura is still incredible!
I'm an American, and I've known who Dame Maggie Smith is for a very long time. That said, we watch quite a bit of British television/movies, so that no doubt has something to do with it. She's a fabulous actress.
Btw, I'm an American, but not one of the brash types. Just for the record is all. ;)
I will always love her, and will always remember her line to David Niven in "Murder By Death" where she said, "we'll se, we'll talk" loved it and her.
Sister Act was the first time I’ve seen this phenomenal actress!!!! Nd been following her every since!! Love her
