Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation Limited (TNSTC) is the public transport bus operator of Tamil Nadu, India.[1] It operates buses along intra and inter state bus routes, as well as city routes.
It is fully owned and operated by Government of Tamil Nadu. It caters to all the districts within Tamil Nadu and also operates services to neighboring states of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala and union territory of Puduchery. From 2012 TNSTC buses are operated for a maximum distance of 300 kms. Routes longer than this are transferred to SETC.[2]
Until 1996, transport corporation was bifurcated into 21 divisions which was later merged to form 8 divisions. School and college students get a free bus pass to travel on TNSTC buses.[3] TNSTC owns 294 depots and five workshops. TNSTC also offers contract and tourist services. Every bus owned by the corporation displays a portrait of Tamil poet Thiruvalluvar along with a two line verse from Thirukkural inside the bus.
SETC (State Express Transport Corporation) is the state government owned Transport Corporation of Tamil Nadu State of India. The old name of SETC is Thiruvalluvar Transport Corporation. The objective of SETC is to run long distance (more than 250 km) express bus service in and out of Tamil Nadu State to link major cities, historical places, commercial places and religious places of neighborhood states of Kerala, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Union Territory of Pondicherry. State Express Transport Corporation operates Super Deluxe, Semi Deluxe, Ultra Deluxe and Video coach buses.
