    I love old Homelites. It's probably why I have tinnitus.

    Thanks for the thorough explanation. I got a Super XL Ao that is not oiling . Now I have some info to pull it apart and check things. Got it as a birthday present 35 years ago. Still runs great!

    Thanks for this video. I found a homelite xl in the trash and salvaged it. My first chainsaw and thought there was no way it was supposed to use that much oil. Now I gotta tackle why it won’t stay running. Lol

    Not sure I’ve ever heard anyone complain about too much bar oil🤣 it’s always the opposite.
    Thanks for sharing, always great content👍🏻

    I've worked on some Echo 302's and they all seem to have rotted oil and fuel lines, bit of a pain to change you have to do the oil line through the fill hole!

    Leon, do you have a video on repairing the manual oil line on a Super XL blue early 60's saw? Looks like the one I picked up has the copper line broke from the screw that goes under the trigger. TYIA.

    Now I got a little gist on how it works. Mine is an '80 model and doesn't seem to oil enough/at all when cutting. I hit the manual oiler/bypass and it's fine, but I get a smoke show. Time to pull the other side apart and see what I'm working with.
    Got it for $7 and put $20 in it for the carb kit and plug.
    My time added onto the total cost is about $50-55 saw. Not shabby.

    From my examination of my Homelite UT10540 it looks like that pump operates similarly except the plunger is plastic. I think that design is prone to leakage from the pump because the plunger wears more rapidly than a metal one. Also it would be possible to reduce the oil flow by restricting the opening of the pump output (with say JB Weld and a redrilled smaller hole).

    Leon,
    I took the move to use Amsoil 2 stroke Saber oil in my two stroke equipment. You know my saws so what ratio? Stihl blower and Husqvarna blower, 460 chainsaw and trimmer what ratio for them? Always using non-ethanol Premium fuel. Is 100:1 okay for them?

    Hey Leon hope your doing well I have a super xl automatic that had a no good blue coil I found a doner saw with the black coil and switch it to the black coil and the flywheel and it has tons of spark but when I try to start it I can crank on it til it floods and never hit a lick what could that be thanks have a great day!!

    So, this means that a Super XL was probably calibrated for a 24" bar? So by extension would a 28" bar be too much bar on a Super XL unless I was hitting the manual pump a bit too? I might be interested in setting up a 28" SXL. I do like them with a 24".

    Great Video Leon,I just got a Homelite 54 running and it was soaking the 16" bar and chain while I was setting the carb.It has a adjustable oiler,was set on 2 and I turned it to 1.It still dumps a lot of oil.whats the longest bar that saw could run reliably?Maybe that's why it uses so much?

    Hello gentlemen, a couple of weeks ago i did buy a vintage 1972 Homelite super XL AO Blue version and i want to know, what type of oil i need to use and how much fuel and oil mixture per liter. I did a research and it could be SAE 30/10W40 oil? Thanks in advance guys 😊

    How much compression should a Super XL have to run good? Mine has about 115 psi and can't get it to start..

      @Wmbhill Před 3 lety +1

      I’m wondering the same thing. On my Super XL, under the clutch, there is a plastic assembly that looks almost identical to that aluminum one he just showed. I use the manual pump but I wonder if I can have both. Mine also has the same long oil pickup tube he took out.

      @oologahgardentractorandcha3055 Před 3 lety +2

      @@Wmbhill no, there aren't holes in the case where the oil would leave the pump and go to the bar

      If you have 5/16 bar studs on an XL12 or sxl12 you should note that. They also sometimes have 3/8" studs either model. Most use a 3/8" bar slot with a "S" clip. Oregon has both. They measure in millimeters.

    I would run our Blue SXLAO’s back in the 70’s and I don’t remember using bar oil. We used straight 30 weight oil for bar oil.
    What’s your take on using SAE 30 vs Bar oil?
    I use bar oil now, but 30 weight seems to work as well

    • @ericharris893
      @ericharris893 Před 3 lety +2

      Bar oil is 30w with an anti sling agent in it. I use 10-30 in the winter sometimes if im doing Construction or for the saw at my saw mill. 10-30w is good for a saw that don’t oil very well also. I use bar oil most of the time tho.
