At 20:53 that Jacksonville player goes full Chris Webber😳. Does a walk then says oh I’ll save myself by calling TO. That was the biggest play of the game, gave it away.

This is better basketball, back when you were allowed to play defense 😤

The first NCAA tournament doubleheader at Notre Dame (which made the tournament but was sent to the Midwest Regional and played at Houston and Wichita). I never understood why the court had red painting. By 1972 it was all blue and gold. Jacksonville made the 1970 national championship game, and Western Kentucky made the 1971 Final Four.

Wow. Jacksonville gave that game away! Very poorly coached.

Do you have the WKU vs Jacksonville game from 78 that went into OT?

McDaniels went 11-28 from the field and 1-4 from the line for a total of 28 points. He also had 13 rebounds. Artis was 3-10 from the field and 6-10 from the line for a total of 13 points. He pulled down 22 rebounds and had 11 blocks. Jacksonville led this game 44-30 at the half. WKU advanced in the tournament, losing to Villanova in the Final Four.
The year before (1970), Jacksonville eliminated WKU in the NCAA tournament, 109-96. Earlier in the this 1970-71 season (on Dec 23, 1970), WKU handed Jacksonville a 97-84 loss.
In his senor year, McDaniels ave. 29.3ppg.
Ironic that the following season, Gilmore would be playing ball in Kentucky (for the Colonels of the ABA).

JI watched those 2 games and thought Jacksonville would win, Clarance Glover scored at the end of the game . pretending to tie his sneaker and the Jacksonville player took his eye off the play.

@@stever1791 Jacksonville really gave this one away. The double-dribble by Fleming at 20:54 is inexcusable (6 seconds left in a tie game). And then it looks like it is Fleming again - who was probably too distraught over his turnover - that he gets confused and forgets to cover Glover. That's when Glover decides to pull the old tying-my-sneaker trick at 21:10.

@@ddenuci It looked to me like it was Pembrook Burrows who traveled. Gowdy never names the traveler. Numerous times in this video, one of Jacksonville’s 7-footers handles the ball in the backcourt. Horrible.

@@thehargraves63 No, it was Fleming. I just found an old newspaper article online that confirms it. Fleming actually was having a very good game up to that point. He was 8-15 from the field, for a total of 18 points.

Jacksonville was so poorly coach this game. Jim McDaniels was great as usual, Howard Porter was next for the hilltoppers. Without Jerome Perry there would be no Title

@@eskiasmcdaniels5648 Yes he was a great player. I remember seeing WK and your Dad in Philly vs LaSalle #2 in the country and Big Jim played wonderful -36 points and he gave WK a nice lead into the 2nd half. But LaSalle and their great team came back and won the Game. LaSalle had 4 Pros on that team 1) Larry Gannon 2) bernie williams 3) Ken Durrett and 4) Roland Taylor. Your Dad was one om my favorites and you should be real proud of his accomplishments.

@@stever1791 I remember watching the Western Kentucky-LaSalle game on Channel 17 out of Philly.....They would regularly broadcast Big Five double headers from the Palestra......LaSalle went 23-1 that year (or was it 1970?) , but for some reason were not allowed in the tournament.....Villanova had to vacate their NCAA appearance because Howard Porter had signed with an agent.....I seem to also recall watching St.Joseph's clobber #5 Davidson , Coached by Lefty Driesell, also on Channel 17...Mike Hauer and Dan Kelly were stars for the Hawks....Mike Bantom was also on that team.......Don't forget Clem Haskins a few years earlier at Western Ky....I concur...Jim McDaniels was a great player....but why was he still in the game with a 20 point lead and one minute left....I wonder what Adolph Rupp thought!

@@joeblow7407 Those were great basketball days. Much better than todays' game.LaSalle was great in 1968/1969. # 2 in the country - Recruiting issues put them on probation from a coach before Tom Gola. I think Heyer eas his name.
Why McDaniels was in the game vs Kentucky with a 25 point lead ???? I can only think that Big Jim didn't want to come out. Maybe he thought Coach Rupp should have recruited him stronger to become the first black to play in the SEC or at least at Kentucky.
Many people don't know this but Ken Durrett really wanted to go to Villanova with Howard Porter, but his SAT scores were below he standard and Villanova couldn't allow his entrance. George Raveling was the recruiter and he 'Almost got Artis Gilmore to go there.
