The first NCAA tournament doubleheader at Notre Dame (which made the tournament but was sent to the Midwest Regional and played at Houston and Wichita). I never understood why the court had red painting. By 1972 it was all blue and gold. Jacksonville made the 1970 national championship game, and Western Kentucky made the 1971 Final Four.

Kentucky's guards could not handle the full court press of Western. Lots of size on the flooor with UK playing Payne and Andrews together, and McDaniels of Western Ky. Rose of Western was a very good guard.

This WKU team was one of the very best college teams ever from the state. But their legacy collapsed after Jim McDaniels was exposed by the Kentucky Colonels ABA front office as having made negotiations with an agent while at the final 4 in Houston. The agent sent hand written notes by Jim to the Colonels which had the stationary of the Houston hotel. The date written down was before his college amateur status ended on the Sunday of the stay. The NCAA then found that Howard Porter of Villanova had done the same thing, so WKU and Villanova vacated their 2nd and 3rd place finishes. John Wooden's UCLA team had no problem covering up Sam Gilbert's grifting to his players, so they didn't suffer the same fate. Life is unfair.

McDaniels went 11-28 from the field and 1-4 from the line for a total of 28 points. He also had 13 rebounds. Artis was 3-10 from the field and 6-10 from the line for a total of 13 points. He pulled down 22 rebounds and had 11 blocks. Jacksonville led this game 44-30 at the half. WKU advanced in the tournament, losing to Villanova in the Final Four. The year before (1970), Jacksonville eliminated WKU in the NCAA tournament, 109-96. Earlier in the this 1970-71 season (on Dec 23, 1970), WKU handed Jacksonville a 97-84 loss. In his senor year, McDaniels ave. 29.3ppg. Ironic that the following season, Gilmore would be playing ball in Kentucky (for the Colonels of the ABA).

@@stever1791 Jacksonville really gave this one away. The double-dribble by Fleming at 20:54 is inexcusable (6 seconds left in a tie game). And then it looks like it is Fleming again - who was probably too distraught over his turnover - that he gets confused and forgets to cover Glover. That's when Glover decides to pull the old tying-my-sneaker trick at 21:10.

Interesting tidbit: Western Kentucky's last regular season loss that year came against Austin Peay, 96-94. The APSU center that outrebounded Jim McDaniels is today one of the world's most famous CZcams stars, Hickok45. Coach "Hickok" was my junior high basketball coach and English teacher in 1973-74, his first year as a teacher/coach. Had Hickok's multiple injuries not prevented him from playing his senior year at Peay, he would have been on the team that had Fly Williams and made the Sweet 16.

Why McDaniels was in the game vs Kentucky with a 25 point lead ???? I can only think that Big Jim didn't want to come out. Maybe he thought Coach Rupp should have recruited him stronger to become the first black to play in the SEC or at least at Kentucky. Many people don't know this but Ken Durrett really wanted to go to Villanova with Howard Porter, but his SAT scores were below he standard and Villanova couldn't allow his entrance. @Steve R, I've been a born and raised Kentucky Wildcat fan my whole life but my oldest son went to Western Kentucky over in Bowling Green to get his four years degree. I've actually always liked the Hilltoppers a whole lot too, just never rooted for them against the Cats. I was 10 years old when this game happened, and I remember that whole day my father talking about how he was worried that UK didn't have anyone who could stop Big Jim McDaniels defensively. I remember my father talking about it having been only 7 or 8 years prior to this that Clem Haskins and Dwight Smith had integrated WKU's basketball team, and of course Tom Payne had integrated UK's.

The refs i think helped UCLA against Villanova . A few calls that went Woodens way , a late very questionable goaltending call to give Patterson a basket helped UCLA. But the NCAA didn't want Villanova or Wk to win this championship because of the Pro Contracts that they felt Howard Porter and Big Mac signed with the ABA. And the AD at UCLA was always on the NCAA board and Committes , and that ALWAYS helped The Bruins. WK wins it all if Jerome Perry wasn't injured for the entire year. @@foxbat052
