"I just don't like anything about that dress." Wow, if you don't like it, Grandma, how about some suggestions about what you *would* like to see your granddaughter wear for her wedding. "I don't like the fabric. It's too shiny. I'd like to see you in a dress with fabric that has more of a matt look." Or, "I don't think that neckline flatters you very well. Maybe a sweetheart neckline would be better than that deep V neck." That gives suggestions for improvement and is helpful.

Here’s the thing, most people respect their elders , their community and their family’s opinions. Without them we are all isolated people, obviously, ultimately we should dress to suit ourselves, however, valuing people’s opinions we respect is what makes us social .

I disagree, other people who knows us very well can say it's not her, I can take it or leave it, in my wedding I chose to take these opinions because I was confused and under stress, couldn't decide if I want to look gorgeous or do I want the dress to be gorgeous, do I wish to try something different and surprise people or do I want to be me. I am forever grateful they told me that the dress I originally wanted was not me and talked me out of it because looking back at the pictures now .. damn they were right!

As long as the bride stays within the grandmother's budget, the grnadmother should just shut up. So, see, there's really no difference between northern anbd southern brides. She was paying for the dress. So she kind of had to be there. Secondly, the dress she liked was the one the bride liked best. And it was also the one her grandfather would have liked.
So just maybe the grandmother helped her find the dress that she loved the most? Perhaps the bride (very beautiful) would have picked any old dress and not have seen the one she fell in love with?
You need to see that the grandmother helped the bride with her goal - to find the perfect dress. You don't like her words, fine. But don't forget that, without her, the bride wouldn't have been as happy. Take that for what you will.

Some brides actually want the guests to ooh and aah over their dress. If they bring an entourage, they can serve as test guests.
So YOU don't care about what anyone else likes. But some brides are different. Who are you to say that they aren't allowed to care what others think? Some brides take all kinds of effort to put on a wedding that guests get wowed over.
Besides, the grandmother is paying for the dress. If you don't want someone's opinion, then you pay for your own dress. End of story. The grandmother gets to choose if she will get out her wallet or not.
The thing though that I don't understand is that the grandmother doesn't give constructive criticism. She's just "no" instead of 'I think the neckline is too wide" or "the silhouette that you would look good in is ..." But the bride brought her, so she is allowed to have an opinion.

Grandma was right all the time. Leah is tiny, with a very fine figure, so naturally, just about everything looks good on her. No "problem areas" to cover, so that is just not the question. The question is, in which gown she will look like a self-certain, proud, glowing bride - and that was what happened in that last dress. I personally do not even like it that much (pickups, sleeveless, things that do not appeal to me), but look at Leah, she wore it as if she had never worn anything else in her life. Gradma is a wise person.

The shape of the first dress looked nice on her but the bottom looked sloppy. Perhaps it was the camera angle but the tulle appeared to be uneven.

"Grandma's are the matriarch of the Southern family."
And all we can do is hope that when these ladies getting married now assume that role that they are nicer to their daughters and granddaughters than this lady was.

Grandma wanted something that covered her up more. I get it, but I also agree it is the bride’s special day. However, Grandma should be celebrated for not raising a family of Nicki Minajs.

When are these older ladies ever going to realize that the wedding isn't THEIR wedding? Its not all about them. They need to step back and let the youngins make their own decisions. If the youngins were raised right, they'd make the right choice.

If you want someone to pay something for you, then you give them power. Period. If you don't want them to have that power, pay for your own darn dress.

I've come to the conclusion that if a grown up woman bride can't pick her own dress, after a lifetime of picking dresses for herself, and likely by herself, then maybe she shouldn't be raising her own children. Is she going to need an entourage to get their approval for every parenting decision or thought she has? Why does she care what they all think, if she knows what looks best on her.
