Why do CZcamsrs never conserve wood? The 2x4s from the demoed wall could have been used to fill in the windows.
It irks me everytime.
100% Plus I'll bet most of that wood is 10x higher quality than the cheap overseas lumber you get these days.
Not to mention all of the LONG 2x4s from the ceiling that he hacked 4 feet from the end. Just cut the nails at each end and you have usable salvaged wood to help with the budget.
Woulda been so much cheaper than buying new lumber
You can take the wall out and have a flat ceiling. Get an engineer to tell you size of 😊beam needed. Here’s what you do build temporary walls on both sides. Cut the ceiling joists to have opening the size of width of beam. Put jack studs at either end if no space in attic for beam to rest. Use Simpson joist hangers on ceiling joists and boom you have a flat ceiling. We did it a lot in remodels. It’s coming along great. Retire the whole house, your kitchen alone should have 7 individual breakers
Yep, this... have an engineer check it out to make sure the beam and support are sized correctly and up to code. Just a bit more in cost.
I was about to suggest a hidden beam like Michael alm did.
Engineers will sometimes tell you for free
I came here to type this. Even if the beam has to be on the larger side, recess as much as possible and have what's left protrude out of the ceiling. It can then be used in the design as a feature, but I'm pretty certain that wall can go.
This project just feels wrong. Very much all over the place, not your usual style.
Always appreciate the content and hard work. ❤️
I was wondering from the very beginning why are you doing siding work and painting and then you're changing the windows. I understand the roof part but siding and exterior walls before fixing the inside. A little backwards but that's alright 😂
I was legit thinking of making the same comment, lmfao. After the garage/backyard and the roof, he should have went straight into demoing the inside of the house. The exterior of the house should have been done last.
Love the real vaulted ceiling you revealed, it looks so much more light and spacious, you found such a lot of mess-ups that were covered up
Put a column at the top of the stairs to the basement and maybe one more along the span and you can still get rid of that wall and the columns will support the weight of the roof. Great video!!
Man what a great series. Seeing you transform that house from what it was to what is now, such a major improvement.
There's a chance to remove that load bearing wall without a massive beam cuting into your head space. Instead of resting joists ontop of the beam you can put it flush with the ceiling into the attic and use joist hangers off of the beam. Plus a beam or steal post on other side of the beam to hold it up. The beam will then be hidden in the attic while opening up the whole area.
Yeah hidden or not why not add the beam? Still was wondering if he did knock out that wall how he was gonna do the staircase but I did an exposed beam in one spot and a non exposed beam in another when I remodeled my house. Love my open floor plan now!
I came here to say this! I did that in my house! Beam is up in the attic with the joists tied into the beam up there! Take that wall down if you want! Its fairly straightforward!
It's never good when you start off a video for demo and say, "We want to remove this wall. Hopefully it's not load bearing...".
I am curious if they saw that you stacked the ceiling joints on a 2x4 double top plate that you ripped the wall out from under it? That is technically load bearing and not sure that would pass code. That ceiling may sag over time since you didn't header the opening or anything.
I’m confused on why he did the outside of the house first but good luck on it
Just because i'm curious: once i saw the kitchen with everything removed i fell in love with the high, slanted ceiling open concept 🥰. Is the ceiling joist structurally necessary or could they be put onto the slanted area?
Btw what a progress! 💜
I was fully expecting the slanted ceiling as well. Could make it look like a unique feature of a small house.
I was defo hoping he’d keep the vaulted ceiling !! Look so big and open!
Me too
As a contractor I can tell this guy doesn’t do this everyday but props to you for attempting! Real demo can be boring and methodical but I like your “as seen on tv” demo style!
HGTV have trained people into thinking demoing like a gorilla is a good thing.
Bro, what?
@@TonySopranoNola What don’t you understand?
I've done some home building and a bunch of old building renovations back in the day, not sure we ever went from the outside in though.... I get it that sponsors and weather are important, but when you have to get your exterior paint to match perfectly after the fact, well....
Love watching the progress of this. Finally combining all of the remodeling skills into a complete overhaul! The final walkthrough video is going to be amazing.
should just do vaulted ceilings in there! would make it feel wayyy more open
Do a cathedral ceiling or vaulted ceiling in the kitchen!
This is why we do the inside before the outside.
Why would he do anything sensible?
Nothing comes completely clear for him
Yeah he seems to accomplish a lot but as projects get bigger nice to have a clear plan so that when unforeseen happens you can adjust. It just made me cringe when he had to pull off newly painted trim on the outside of the house. All is well though. Still entertaining.
KUDOS to the DIY CZcamsrs that take on projects like this, knowing full well there will be more negative comments than positive ones...Positive feedback is of value to everyone. Far too much negativity going on these days as it is imo.
@@onebigchief1 there’s negativity and there’s common sense.
08:19 cut higher or lower. leaves you with a nice length of wood for future projects. Now you are left with two short halves.
That old couch in the kitchen/dinning area is so cool. I love that kind of stuff.
Great videos! Keep 'em coming. Love watching your progress. Thanks for uploading.
I love this channel because I am also learning things AS I am doing them for the first time and this just confirms I'm not alone in the struggle 😂
I have been watching for years. This is the most exciting video about this old house lol demo is always so exciting to me. Once I open one wall, can't help but open another lol can't wait for the kitchen. But from a girls prospective, if you have the budget, please no white kitchen or black hardwares. Incorporate silver or gold with beige or olive green cabinets are so much more high end looking. Of course if you really have the budget, go dark walnut tone with antique gold handles, and insert cabinet doors lol
Great video can’t wait to see what you do next
open ceiling looked much better . maybe fur out the ceiling with 2x4 for insulation and have it opened , instead of the bulk there
Tip for the future, i try to take off trim and anything holding back the drywall and score the drywall at the corners you can get big chunks out and not have as much mess. don't be like chip
The load bearing wall can be removed if a beam and truss structure is made but that can be more expensive so up to you and the wife lol
Lots if natural light. As he slowly removes and reduces the windows.
The structural wall aside, which many have commented on that you could remove. Why do all the exterior work only to come back and take windows out and trim and fill in holes with more new boards? That seems like a lot of extra work and money to do? A bit of planning before hand and extra demo would have saved you.
Yes! This is what I needed today! Can't wait to see how you're going to handle the basement opening. Be safe out there!!😊
Very cool episode
Might be good to put a temporary rail or barrier of some kind around the stairs to the basement so no one accidentally falls in when they walk around that corner.
What is going on with this open concept staircase? I need an explanation of taking that wall down and still having a hole in the floor
Why not add columns to the load bearing wall to make it more open and still give it support?
I just put in columns when I took down a load bearing wall. They frame my island and make a nice walkthrough.
Time for a hardhat and a prayer!
Keep the keep it the kitchen ceiling tall it’s a blessing in the disguise
You mentioned the lack of headers. Just note that Headers above windows/doors are only needed on load bearing walls. No need to waste bigger 2x material for a non-load bearing wall (not saying that those walls weren't load bearing, just saying that you don't need them unless it's load bearing)
you could make the pantry between the garage and the kitchen that wat you can optimize the space you have within the kitchen. + the pantry will also function als a cold barrier between the garage and the house, since yer getting rid of the windows anyways :D nice headway today :D
and i dont know if you have the ability or cash but maybe move the basement stairs towards said pantry :D
That saw sounds like it has not been fully charged, lol
this is one of those things where if someone was doing this in my neighborhood, and i was walking by, and some dude doing demo shoted "hey! wanna come breaksome stuff and tear down a wall!" i would be in there faster than a southerner can crack open a can of sweet tea
One things for sure, them older homes were built to last, unlike the newer cheaply built one of today!
We finally made it inside.
Bruh...hard hat!
Since you can’t take the wall out cause it’s load bearing, why not put a pass through or just a window opening in it to open up the space and let more light through between both rooms 😅 just a thought
Love the new project, such a inspiration ✅
To who?
Why didn’t you vault the kitchen ceiling it was already open and high ?
@13:27 in the video did the whole roof move when you demo the cabinet above the range hood?
You dealt with that spider like a boss.
Was hoping for a vaulted kitchen ceiling given how low the ceiling is
is it necessary to cut the studs, i get it is easy to remove it but isn't waste of resource especially if they are in a good condition?
That's not load bearing wall. Load bearing walls are made of concrete.
Just curious why can't you do a beam? Not one that goes under the joist but cut a section of the joist out and attach them to the side of a beam with joist hangers
I feel like it wouldve looked nice if you left the kitchen vaulted more ceiling height and spacious
What are you doing with the house after finished? The garage is your dream shop and you have a beautiful house so what are you doing with this home?
He’s going to sell it.
I bet he demolishes the whole house when he's done. The land is probably more valuable.
My guess too would be he's gonna sell it after he can squeeze every possible renovation video out of it that he can. It's basically just a way for him to attract sponsors. Guess youtube is the only work he does 🤷♀️
@@laylawalker8897 can’t fault him for that. Their job is content creation, so whatever gets more projects on CZcams is what happens. I like the videos.
I think he will sell his big house, move in this one until he find a bigger house with bigger yard and bigger garage for his family and … start renovating again but this time, his family will be in a house so they won’t suffer the renovation. Then he will sell this smaller house. Make sense to me!
I think my aunt had a plastic covered sofa like that! 😂
damn I jumped abit when you pulled on that ceiling over the kitchen and the whole thing moved. I was like, GTFO out of that deathtrap! :D
Why did you lower the ceiling in the kitchen?
Would you be able to make posts to support the load?
This is also the area where he tested drywall for asbestos. I'd test the other older areas before demoing them.
Would have loved to leave the kitchen ceiling open and vaulted. Just wondering why you decided to close it up?
random question what did you do with your old tools when you got the ryobi sponsorship
Prob kept them so he could use ‘‘em off camera riobi is trash😂😂
Irony; A DIY’er being upset at the work of a previous DIY’er
I have 50 black widows in my garage in CA. I didn't know they were rare in other places.
"Got rid of 4 inches" We all know that 4 inches is A LOT!!
Don’t take no for an answer…. This is gunna get people in trouble 😂
"oh a black widow spider. I've never seen one before". Mate I have hundreds around my house. They suck. (I'm in Australia)
Nice I love the video as always. As a German I am fully aware that you can build prooper homes with wood - still the american cost effective way is against my mind.
If we build a home it "should last a lifetime" - American homes will do that too ofc, still for me it feels like they will last only 30-50 years.
German wooden houses are built with massive beams, one layer of OSB on both side and then drywall on top both sides. But here just Drywall on the wooden frames, you can literally shake the walls with your hands.
My grandmother was raised in a wooden home purchased by her great-grandmother. That home saw six generations in roughly 200 years. It's possible.
Americans and their matchsticks and cardboard houses. In the civilised world we wouldn't store a bike in a shed built like this.
Are you selling this place after you finish or renting it out
That couch though.
If, "tell me you are sponsored by Ryobi without telling me you're sponsored by Ryobi" was a video...
why not keep the cathedral ceilings in kitchen??????
At 13:30- 13:29 ish Sir that the whole corner above you gave way moved up loosely doesn’t look like it was Tighed in on the ceiling bracing
“It’s only half inch board” : me laughing in Latin-American! Most use less than that
I wish you would really tell us how you feel about that guy that did all that crazy shit in that house lol 😂
What a mess
Did you consult with an engineer on the framing or the permitting for the addition?
On his way to a million subscribers - I knew I shoulda started a youtube channel all those years ago! 😔
36 years of my life doing this kinda crap.
Before youtube was a thing, my customers were people that didnt know how to do it - after youtube my customers became people that didnt want to do it.
I like watching these types of channels so I can point out what they are NOT showing you, or doing wrong, lol
Imagine if we planned the full build before demo… we wouldn’t need to fix the siding we just completed
Those were structural cabinets hahaha
You really tall or are the ceilings really low?
the previous owner is trying to kill you.. pls be carefull❤
Why would you paint and trim around the window if you knew it was going to go?
3/4” drywall?!? Tell me about that?
It would be super educational for the viewers to see how you “remove” a load bearing wall!
(Obviously the right way.)
Remove it!!! Happy wife, happy life! 🤣
Surprise another breaker box
No bro it's the back if the same one in the pantry
Why not save some of those beams.....????
To reuse.
A true header as you imagine it isn’t necessary on all the non load bearing walls you pointed out. It WAS on the one you found because it was likely the outside gable end wall of the house hence the exterior siding. Stop calling the “other guy” an idiot, someone’s gonna rip your work down and say the same exact thing, it’s just what us contractors love doing.
Use the donkey kick bro! So much easier on the legs
So you're replacing windows after installing and painting new siding. Nothing about this renovation seems planed or organised. You're rushing through jobs and making silly mistakes. You should have done all the demo work at once and then started putting the house back together.
ok GC
The more you demo the more you realize why you got such a "good deal" lmao
Love this channel, but I cringe when you don’t have on eye protection. Especially when it’s resting on your hat! Lol. I can’t wait to see how this progresses!
The reason they didn't put plywood or OSB on the outside walls is because it's not required in some areas. Also, it only really serves as bracing for sheer strength on walls. You would typically find cross bracing from corner to corner on homes without exterior sheathing. I built 2 houses in 2022 with plywood every 8 feet and foam panels in between.
Anything is pretty much possible. But if it's a budgetary constraint you are moot. That wall can sensibly be removed with a flush beam (PSL or LVL) or a packed out H or I beam. Obviously just pay an engineer to size it and stamp the plans for it. I am sure you can do it skill-wise, but its a question of money (as every remodel is!)
Did you say "a blank cannabis"...? ya... i agree... going to need allot for that job.
Despite everyone’s comments I think you’re doing a great job 👏🏻
Please don’t use screws with any joists or joist hangers. Screws lack the tensile strength that proper nails provide. Screws will likely fail under dead/live loads. Also a dab of glue or construction adhesive on the bottom of hangers will prevent shifting and/or squeaking. Great videos and series!
They make joist hanger screws.
Man, why not just keep the lofted ceiling. You wanted to create more “room” by taking out the wall, giving people headspace makes it feel bigger too
I guess I'm third. The moment I saw the title I wondered if this is legal lmao
אהבתי את ההזדהות עם המילואימניקים
:)
are you two (and family) moving here? It must be a better neighborhood? or am i just being nosy? never mind, keep demoing.
Good. Another home saved from the horror that is open concept. Whats next-- an open-concept toilet and children's playroom?
