  • Elliot takes a spin in the new Wuling Bingo: the latest small, affordable electric car from the company behind the adorable Mini EV. But while the Mini was a hit in China only, this slightly bigger brother has its sights firmly set on the Western market too - could this be the simple, small, affordable EV we've been impatiently waiting for?

    If that car went on sale at the UK price shown (circa £7K) not only would it sell like hotcakes, but it would be a real kick up the backside of legacy auto makers and completely disrupt the way we buy cars. Unfortunately, like most of the Chinese EVs that make it over here, it will double in price. But even so, at £14K, it would probably still sell well.

    • @davidcolin6519
      @davidcolin6519 Před rokem +14

      There is no way that it will sell at that price though, is there?
      It is more likely to sell at about double that price, which puts it head to head with some of the cheapest (and slowest) ICEs on the UK market.
      That would still make it an interesting alternative, although I don't think it would have any of the safety features that the legacy makers would include. OTOH, a BEV for 14K is still interesting.

    That price is jaw dropping. Honestly, I'd buy one tomorrow for that. But you can at least double it, if it comes to the UK. That's still pretty good. I'd like the top speed to get to a shade over 70mph in all conditions, and I'm 100% sure that's doable. There will always be that odd occasion where a quick spurt down the bypass is required, and I've little doubt that little electric drive unit is just software limited, so pump it up to 75mph please, and we'll call it a day. 👍

      I've got an e-Up! - it's a close run thing. The boot space looks a lot more usable, and I'd like to see the figures for the DC and AC charging ports (e-Up limited to 25kW DC). Would want to see what the infotainment system is like, and more details on the regen braking. Plus, would be interested in the warranty details. That top speed is a killer, though. I mostly do city driving, but even with that there are sections of motorway I drive occasionally.

    I guess it's a lot heavier than the Tercel that I learned to drive on. It had about the same BHP, but it had no problem with going 65+ mph, on the US interstate.

      How insightful, satirical and cutting. That's it, we're done for. I give up now and I'll buy a diesel, because as we all know, the fossil fuel industry and western automotive manufacturers have an exemplary record on human rights going back 120 years . . . . . not.

  • @nippingshrewdestreets3264

    Nice looking car! I'd buy one if I hadn't purchased my i10 last year, however I would have concerns on rust proofing etc as some of the Chinese EV's where I live rust up quickly. Small EV's like that are ideal for certain types of buyers for sure, however not a complete replacement for Fiesta's etc as many of us who want small cars also need to do long trips also at times.

      Western manufacturers aren't afraid as their lobby groups are firmly entrenched in government policy offices much as the Oil and Gas industry is. The transition is going to continue to crawl along while the rest of the world makes real progress.

    I live in Germany (yes, Autobahn etc) and I usually run my elderly Nissan Leaf between the trucks at 85-ish kph. Biggest gripe: no adaptive cruize control. So if they'd give this car an adaptive CC, then I'll be happy to replace my Leaf with the Bingo. Especially, as the whole frikkin car costs only as much as a new, poopy 24kwh battery for my Leaf!
