Why Don't We Have Flying Cars Yet?

  • Companies like Boeing, Airbus, Toyota and Uber are recognizing the need for more efficient travel, and injecting millions into developing VTOLs, or Verticle Takeoff and Landing Vehicles. Though these vehicles don’t much resemble the flying cars of “Back to the Future” or “Blade Runner,” they have the potential to fundamentally change the way we commute in cities. Experts predict the market for urban air mobility to reach $1.5 trillion by 2040.

Of course; we can't trust the average schmuck out there on the road as it is. It will have to be computer-assisted. Basically you'll just be a passenger, telling the machine where to take you, and it will do most of the avoidance & safety maneuvers on its own. Of course, a few people will die before the kinks are worked out, and then we'll always have to be on the lookout for hackers trying to reprogram these things and cause them to deliberately crash!

Another interesting thing. Years ago engineers looked at car and said "ok, we can't merge it with plane yet, but we can make it swim" and merged it with BOAT making amphibian cars. Cool! You dont need bridges anymore and can even go down the river! And while idea seemed cool, result was clunky, ugly...thing nobody wanted. Swimming cars was failure because they hardly resembled sleek sport car, they was literally boats on wheels. Why peoples think flying car will be "cars" at all?
BTW, amphibian cars still exists and newer models much better then it used to be. But its still rather poor boat + poor car mixed.

While flying cars may be impractical today, I think it's naive to say it can never happen. It might just require methods and take on a form that hasn't yet been invented.

Self-driving cars alone will solve plenty of traffic jam issues we got today as computer autopilots can have swarm logic and communicate with each other to achieve maximum efficiency for better utilization of roads, something people got trouble with... Early systems of between car communication and traffic jam avoidance assistants are already in some cars, hopefully, by the end of the decade, we will have some reasonably capable self-driving that is not good only as a gadget for showing off or data gathering lab prototype add-on you can participate in with your wallet in quest for improving life in the future, but something that genuinely work on its own better than human driver at least in clear weather when not towing anything...
Personally, I got my doubts about cheap flying car/taxi concept even in self-flying VTOL only form because dealing with paparazzi and terrorist become ridiculously expensive for too many which can be targeted, just imagine how hard would be to protect Trump from the premature end of his presidency when entities with enough resources or hackers of autonomous VTOL systems decide that they got enough of him as some American nutcase or Iranian nationalist will try to "save" his country decline by forceful replacement of president...
Currently, we got only man-portable guided missiles, autocannons spewing solid pieces of heavy metals or shrapnels, and soon also lasers as systems somewhat usable in urban areas against such heavy flying threads. Neither of these solutions are cheap (need for 24/7 automatization) nor something that you would want every place that can be threatened with a civilian VTOLS to be in possession of...
Negatives simply vastly outweigh positives for this one, similarly to Elon's plan for fast long-range travel with civilian made ICBM's, though I have my doubts about how much was such concept promotion of his companies for dreamers and how much was it actually technology he really expected to succeed. But some very smart people supporting these flying taxis to go far beyond some pretty CGI animation to get people excited even when they must been dealing with critics for a long time, which means they likely are neither naive nor just insufficiently informed about negatives and most likely have some dirty tricks in their sleeves to push such security disaster upon us for their own profits, or they simply milking their investors without expecting any success.

The current urban sprawl and car-centric lifestyle is simply unsustainable once the population reaches certain threshold. It is a never-ending chase of building new roads, expansion and keep the city/town size growing further out, forcing people to travel farther and desire to have cars.

Flying an aircraft is definitely less efficient than driving a car, creating lift and moving forward is always going to cost more energy than just moving forward. We would be wasting way more energy. Countries other than the US don’t have these traffic problems like you see in California, it’s poorly designed infrastructure, there are a million better solutions around traffic than flying cars.

I'm a little surprised that they didn't say much about piloting the aircraft. A few thoughts from a pilot:
    1) Even for an autonomous aircraft, a trained pilot still needs to be on board the aircraft to fly it manually if the guidance system or any other major component fails. The autonomous aircraft concept works as long as nothing goes wrong, but any emergency - motor/engine failure, computer failure, low battery, unusual aircraft attitude caused by turbulence, lost communication, bird strike, severe weather, aircraft icing - would likely be fatal with no pilots on board to fly manually.
    2) Your average person with a non-autonomous flying car would have to go through pilot training and be certified, and then they'd need to stay current with the requirements of maintaining their certification as pilots.
    3) Long-established aviation rules dictate that every flight must have a pilot-in-command (PIC) who is responsible for the flight. An autonomous aircraft still needs a PIC to oversee the flight and to make decisions about the safety of the flight. This would require that a person serve as PIC for every autonomous flight, which would defeat the purpose of having the flight be autonomous. Even drone (UAV) flights are still required by FAA rules to have a PIC for each flight.
    4) The aircraft must be able to communicate on the radio with air traffic control (ATC), and ATC must be able to track the flight of an aircraft with radar. This is necessary to provide separation from other aircraft and to facilitate the flow of air traffic. The airspace over large cities is already crowded with conventional aircraft, and it's unclear how a large number of new aircraft would be integrated into the ATC system, even if they were autonomous.
    5) Changing weather conditions (or other hazards) may require alterations to the flight plan, a decision not easily made by a computer. A pilot (the PIC) needs to be available to.make decisions about contingency plans or to alter the flight route to avoid weather systems and hazards or to divert to a different landing site.
I see these as much bigger challenges to flying cars than the technological challenges of designing the cars themselves.
