Why Don't We Have Flying Cars Yet?

- Companies like Boeing, Airbus, Toyota and Uber are recognizing the need for more efficient travel, and injecting millions into developing VTOLs, or Verticle Takeoff and Landing Vehicles. Though these vehicles don’t much resemble the flying cars of “Back to the Future” or “Blade Runner,” they have the potential to fundamentally change the way we commute in cities. Experts predict the market for urban air mobility to reach $1.5 trillion by 2040.

Of course, a few people will die before the kinks are worked out, and then we'll always have to be on the lookout for hackers trying to reprogram these things and cause them to deliberately crash!

We can't have Flying Cars before Self Driving Cars.
But self-driving car can cause some disasters like software hack and software failure (like plane disaster that caused by boeing software).
Igor Dvorzhak very true
Self-driving cars alone will solve plenty of traffic jam issues we got today as computer autopilots can have swarm logic and communicate with each other to achieve maximum efficiency for better utilization of roads, something people got trouble with... Early systems of between car communication and traffic jam avoidance assistants are already in some cars, hopefully, by the end of the decade, we will have some reasonably capable self-driving that is not good only as a gadget for showing off or data gathering lab prototype add-on you can participate in with your wallet in quest for improving life in the future, but something that genuinely work on its own better than human driver at least in clear weather when not towing anything...
Personally, I got my doubts about cheap flying car/taxi concept even in self-flying VTOL only form because dealing with paparazzi and terrorist become ridiculously expensive for too many which can be targeted, just imagine how hard would be to protect Trump from the premature end of his presidency when entities with enough resources or hackers of autonomous VTOL systems decide that they got enough of him as some American nutcase or Iranian nationalist will try to "save" his country decline by forceful replacement of president...
Currently, we got only man-portable guided missiles, autocannons spewing solid pieces of heavy metals or shrapnels, and soon also lasers as systems somewhat usable in urban areas against such heavy flying threads. Neither of these solutions are cheap (need for 24/7 automatization) nor something that you would want every place that can be threatened with a civilian VTOLS to be in possession of...
Negatives simply vastly outweigh positives for this one, similarly to Elon's plan for fast long-range travel with civilian made ICBM's, though I have my doubts about how much was such concept promotion of his companies for dreamers and how much was it actually technology he really expected to succeed. But some very smart people supporting these flying taxis to go far beyond some pretty CGI animation to get people excited even when they must been dealing with critics for a long time, which means they likely are neither naive nor just insufficiently informed about negatives and most likely have some dirty tricks in their sleeves to push such security disaster upon us for their own profits, or they simply milking their investors without expecting any success.

Not just America, but yeah many countries simply lack the investment on good mass transport infrastructure. We can pretty much solve or at least reduce the effects of traffic congestion by having better mass transport and better urban planning. The current urban sprawl and car-centric lifestyle is simply unsustainable once the population reaches certain threshold. It is a never-ending chase of building new roads, expansion and keep the city/town size growing further out, forcing people to travel farther and desire to have cars.

The future is really unpredictable, isn't it?

It's just as good
We need to drastically improve self-driving first b/c there’s always going to be that once person that just crashes into a building
9/11
Or your the roof of your house
You cant trust people with cars imaging trusting people with cars that can fly... What a nightmare...
The solution for transportation is more RAIL with roads as support not air.
Air should only be for cross continent and urgency.
Vitor Leão rail in the us is unreliable. The country is simply too big
Think flying cars would be attractive to emergency services operating in areas with congested traffic
@@lzh4950 Helicopters
@@ethanferns5495 That is exactly what rail is best at. The bigger the country more effective rail is!
Rail is not as fast as flying but it still much faster than road and many times cheaper than flying.
You can even make high speed rail (bullet trains). They can reach between 30% to 80% of the speed of a conventional plane and be operated by a fraction of the cost.
The biggest problem with rail is the initial investment. Its huge but the advantages pay off.
That’s why they test it when someone drives bad they will be ready
The short answer:
1) Counterintuitive engineering
2) Multiple rules and regulations that need to be met
3) Expensive
imagine having hovering stop signs 😂
Am i the only one who thought of Call Of Duty when she said VTOL
These anxieties sound JUST LIKE the anxieties people had when the first vehicle was invented. :P
As a young science aspirant,

Greetings from India :)
Give us teleportation now Einstein
Flying an aircraft is definitely less efficient than driving a car, creating lift and moving forward is always going to cost more energy than just moving forward. We would be wasting way more energy. Countries other than the US don’t have these traffic problems like you see in California, it’s poorly designed infrastructure, there are a million better solutions around traffic than flying cars.
A high speed rail system would be a lot more efficient than flying cars.
Hahaha do you think Los Angeles has traffic problems? Go to Mexico City or to new Delhi for witnessing true traffic jams freshly made in hell
@@astaroth0316 I don't know if any city traffic can top New York City. I don't know why people go there.
Infrastructure and improper planning is the root problem. One person driving a two-ton SUV in rush hour traffic. These are the results of profit motivated choices of a Capitalist society. No escape and no going back.
@@astaroth0316 Delhi's population density is 30,000 people per sq mile, los los Angeles's is 7,500. And los Angeles's roads are much wider than those in Delhi.
And 7 million people travel in subway everyday, that is much more than population of LA.
all these engineers thinking about how to make flying cars and make it efficient, and there is this random guy on youtube attached a giant drone rotor on his bathtub and use it to go to the grocery store to get milk and get back lmao.
I'm a little surprised that they didn't say much about piloting the aircraft. A few thoughts from a pilot:
1) Even for an autonomous aircraft, a trained pilot still needs to be on board the aircraft to fly it manually if the guidance system or any other major component fails. The autonomous aircraft concept works as long as nothing goes wrong, but any emergency - motor/engine failure, computer failure, low battery, unusual aircraft attitude caused by turbulence, lost communication, bird strike, severe weather, aircraft icing - would likely be fatal with no pilots on board to fly manually.
2) Your average person with a non-autonomous flying car would have to go through pilot training and be certified, and then they'd need to stay current with the requirements of maintaining their certification as pilots.
3) Long-established aviation rules dictate that every flight must have a pilot-in-command (PIC) who is responsible for the flight. An autonomous aircraft still needs a PIC to oversee the flight and to make decisions about the safety of the flight. This would require that a person serve as PIC for every autonomous flight, which would defeat the purpose of having the flight be autonomous. Even drone (UAV) flights are still required by FAA rules to have a PIC for each flight.
4) The aircraft must be able to communicate on the radio with air traffic control (ATC), and ATC must be able to track the flight of an aircraft with radar. This is necessary to provide separation from other aircraft and to facilitate the flow of air traffic. The airspace over large cities is already crowded with conventional aircraft, and it's unclear how a large number of new aircraft would be integrated into the ATC system, even if they were autonomous.
5) Changing weather conditions (or other hazards) may require alterations to the flight plan, a decision not easily made by a computer. A pilot (the PIC) needs to be available to.make decisions about contingency plans or to alter the flight route to avoid weather systems and hazards or to divert to a different landing site.
I see these as much bigger challenges to flying cars than the technological challenges of designing the cars themselves.
Me: Yes I want to fly
Comments: Idiots cant fly yet they drive
Think this way, Putting Wheels to Drones seems to be Simple than adding Wings to Cars.
Soooo many drunk drivers will crash in the ocean with the confidence of thinking they can make a 360 around the earth
We DO have flying cars, you can buy a PAL-V 100% legal on road and in the air ( In US an EU )
NOPE - SORRY - they are taking pre-orders ONLY. they are not in production. by the way, for sale in the US it will have to pass all the safety test as any other car, EPA emissions, airbags, crash testing ...
@@yorinov2001 You are correct! the launch is pushed back to 2021.
*1985:* "We're going to have flying cars in 2015!"
*2020:* The coronavirus strikes (and we STILL don't have flying cars yet...)
Some of y’all can’t even drive in a rural road with crashing and y’all want flying cars in cities?
1960's : we will have flying cars in the future
2020: why we dont have flying cars yet
as much as i would love to have a flying personal car, it would be a terrifying world with everyone being allowed to control a flying car!
3:00 It looks like the old lady who lived in a shoe nursery rhyme.
The future is VTOL air taxis, which is just as cool.
CNBC : Why Don't We Have Flying Cars Yet?
slovakia : we don't questining that here
I'm more concerned with the physics of how said vehicles behave and the effective energy efficiency.
If anyone thinks traffic jams would be solved, lol watch Futurama 😂
how about using the SNECMA's Coleoptere concept? the cylinder wing can be good, i think
