we ticos love it when tourists and/or immigrants speak Spanish. Some of us will want to practice English (or will want to boast that we speak it LOL), but will happily speak Spanish and even help out if you ask. We really like it that you like it here, and we certainly like it that you try :).

I have a good friend from Peru that I work with who I am always trying to practice my Spanish with. I am still working on my pronunciation of Pura Vida! Lol

Many Ticos want to practice their English with you . this can be frustrating if your goal is to experience another Culture through their own language . the more you avoid English speakers , including other expats , the quicker you`ll learn Spanish . avoid Tourist Spots . Ticos are wonderful , good people .

yes they certainly are!! and I agree... very helpful to actually immerse yourself with other ticos and practice the language hands on with them.

i meant to say , you don`t really NEED to learn Spanish to get around . some people are relieved to find this out . there is no judgement or pressure to be anything other than who you are . they`re very comfortable with foreigners and not offended if you do not know Spanish . " Tranquilo" .

Sarah - I have many US friends (I don't use the word "gringo") and they learned really fast by just going to the bar, get a few beers and talk to the locals as you mentioned. In other words get involve with the culture. Cheers! :-)
