Status Update on the Dolomite Fat Bike

  • Over the weekend, we took this cheap Mongoose Dolomite Fat Bike into the ocean to try and surf the wake of a cruise ship. Although it was a failure, we found out that fat bikes float really well. Either way, the bike got exposed to a ton of corrosive saltwater. This was kind of the whole point.
When I got home I submerged the Dolomite in fresh water, and then blasted it with a hose for a good while. I could have taken the bearings apart, or attempted to clean out the cable housings, but I wanted to leave it for a few days to see what would happen.
Although some rust spots appeared the next day, they were easy to get rid of with just a cleaning. I rode this bike a few times this week and I think operating all the stuff on it regularly was beneficial. In fact, the shifter totally seized the day after the ocean. After freeing it up and using it, the bike was shifting as normal. Of course, normal means mediocre.
Based on this, we might get the illusion that the Dolomite is reliable and resilient, but that’s not necessarily the case. If you take a bike in the ocean, and it performs the same after you take it out, then how refined could it have possibly been in the first place. I think about these things.
Through breaking the bike down and cleaning everything thoroughly, I found that there was a lot more rust on the inside. Still I was able to stop the rust and prevent it from getting worse. Thanks to the grease in the headset and bottom bracket, the bearings and races were actually not bad. Still, I’ve definitely reduced the life expectancy of this bike.
Some people have asked me whether it would be cost effective to upgrade this bike, since it seems impressive for $200. Could it be made into a nice fat bike for a little more? Well, maybe, but almost any way you slice it a better fat bike would give you a lot more for your money. To make this feel like a decent bike it would need a better freewheel, crankset, and brakes for starters. At that point you’ll definitely want a better chain as well. The shifter is awful too, so figure on that plus new cables. After these changes the bike would feel a lot better, but would still be seriously hampered by the hubs. So although this may be a fun and cheap toy, it’s debatable whether upgrading it would be cost effective. So this bike is perfect for me as is; cheap and rideable, ready for the ocean.
So that’s my update on the Dolomite. I’ll leave you guys with some bonus footage from that day. After the ship passed we took the bike to the other side of the rocks. We had about 4 cameras going. These fisherman started calling towards us. They were trying to tell us that we had company. Within about a second we realized it was only a manatee, a harmless and curious marine mammal. Only in Florida… Thanks for riding with me today and I’ll see you next time.

Seth...I have that bike too. I wanted a Fat Tire to ride in the soft wash sand out in the desert in Arizona where I am traveling...also a lot of rocks. So far the bike has been great. I am a novice ...75 year old rider...so it is perfect for me and my budget.

The South Florida Museum in Bradenton has a Manatee tank and you can get pretty close. The main reason they have it was to help nurse manatees that were struck by boats. By dumb luck they ended up having a Manatee born in captivity, so now it's technically the museum's pet. Do a quick Google search of "snooty cam" and you'll probably see him during the hours it's active.

My first fat bike was and is a 2013, Framed, Minnesota 2.0. That bike has experienced salt water many times. While I have replaced it with a 2021, Fezzari, Kings Peak as my go to fat bike, the Framed, affectionately known as "Clyde," remains in my quiver as an extra. There is some rust in places but all in all the bike has stood up heroically with only spray downs following exposure to salt, sand and snow.

I know a few fatbike riders who ride regularly in or around sea water...they have said if you strip and regrease the entire bike as soon as you get home it will be fine and live just as long as any other bike.
Although that sounds like a lot of work to me, and on top of that all that pulling apart and putting back together may wear certain things. It would also get expensive IMO.
But I guess it will always ride like new lol.

Reminded me too much of when I rode my cousin's bike. His is a similar mongoose, it weighs a ton and a half (not literally, but it feels like it). He can somehow do decent wheelies with it, where I can't get the front wheel more than a few inches off the ground for a foot.
After we went to college (paved roads everywhere) he bought a fat bike, and I bought a road bike. I much prefer a road bike on pavement, I rarely have to pedal if I follow him, the draft makes enough vacuum to pull me on flat ground, and its his bike that makes the draft (most of the time though I pedal leisurely and he tries to keep up). So for those of you guys out there that live on pavement, a fat tire is useless except hopping curbs, it just rolls over them, otherwise I still prefer even a cheap mountain bike for riding down stairs if that's what you do. Never attempted that on my 700c bike with over 100psi, I don't think it would be pretty, but its certainly not made for that.
He does like his bike though, and on mud, it does pedal easier than my mountain bike for the fact that I spin out sometimes, but wow they are heavy.

Chlorine in poolwater will make it rust also

    • @SethsBikeHacks
      @SethsBikeHacks  Před 8 lety +1

True, in fact chlorine is worse than salt in some ways. Just leaving your bike in a shed with pool chemicals can cause it to rust, but this generally only happens while it's in contact (hence you need to keep adding chlorine to your pool). Salt sticks around and acts as a catalyst for oxidation years after the exposure, so in that sense it's actually much more difficult to get rid of. So considering this, I decided that dunking it would be a net gain, as opposed to relying on a hose to get all the salt off from the start.

Mine is light blue and I bought it for $469 after tax off Amazon… Definitely wasn’t a cheap bike… I guess after seeing a lot of peoples complaints, they reduced the price down to $315… I’m definitely swapping the crank arms as well as the hand grips, handlebar, and of course the seat and seatpost, and swapping for a suspension air fork. I haven’t rode the bike that much, so I really don’t have any complaints on the shifter yet, but I heard that most people end up swapping them out anyway because Mongoose shifters from what I heard is not really that good.

+Vitor Bravo The fat tires make it capable of riding on sand or in mud. The low price makes it perfect for salt water, alligators, and collisions with other bikes.

It's just the traction you get on the fat bike is unmatched but it has a lot of rolling resistance

Sadly some years ago Mongoose and Schwinn was bought by a company called Pacific. The quality of both brands took a nosedive after that. All Pacific did was put Mongoose and Schwinn labels on cheap bikes. When I was a kid you bought Mongoose/Schwinn bikes only at bike shops, NOT at Walmart as you can today. And you paid a lot more for the bikes as well. I abused my old Mongoose and that was the baddest, toughest and fastest bike on the block. Never broke down, never rusted nor locked up. I weep for what passes for Mongoose/Schwinn today.

Schwinn, unfortunately, went bankrupt because they couldn't or wouldn't stay ahead of changes in the market.
Pacific Cycle was bought up by Dorel, according to this wiki, a Canadian company:
      en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schwinn_Bicycle_Company
Dorel also owns Cannondale, Mongoose, Iron Horse, and some other bike marques.
