  • Working on a 1968 Firebird convertible floor pan replacement and found more rust in the inner rocker panels. Problem!!! No one makes them until now. How to modify a coupe inner rocker to work and look like a correct convertible rocker. Much easier and cheaper way then replacing the entire assembly.

    I believe the convertible has reinforcement plates sandwiched in side between the inner and outer, nice job!

      You are correct a convertible has essentially 4 pieces that run full length. Coupe has 2 full length and short sections at the front and rear

    Unfortunately auto manufacturers didn't build cars to last forever . Great advice love the old Firebird.

    Think this tip just ended my 5 year stall on repairing my convert Rocker. I could not see spending 600 bucks plus for a pair of rockers when all I need was the inner s, and as you state the amount of work involved. Also now that some companies are charging 1200.00 for a pair ,and getting scarce for now, I,m going to try the coupe trick.

    I believe the convertible rockers are thicker than the coupes. You should (if you haven't already) look into using an internal frame coating, like the one eastwood garage has.

      Yes convertible rocker panels are 4 parts and heavier gauge. I wish they made the inner rocker only for convertibles,
      Unfortunately it’s an assembly and this car wasn’t budgeted to do that so this was the next best thing and still looks good when done and stronger then a rusty patch.

    Excellent tips, my 68 needs exactly this, can you recommend any inner rockers, mine is pretty rough, do I gain anything buying the one w. Kick panel support? On the NPD site you can get the coupe ones in 16 gauge steel, exactly the same they write for the full convertible rocker, so I guess that is same thickness?

      @VinylVillageGarage  Před rokem +2

      If you can get 16 gauge inners go for it. That is a very nice thickness, I would not mess with the kick panel supports unless yours are rusted out. On this car they where still good. If you have to replace them it’s a good bit more labor to install them as an assembly

      Thanks for the feedback, kick panels are fine in this case, it was merely if I got more metal with these ones. Inner rocker is pretty dead near toe board which was my thinking that you would get more, but I guess the normal inner rocker covers all til way to toe board? The panel on the car now goes wider near the toe board is what I mean.

      Well I think it absolutely wonderful to see any old car especially a Pontiac back up to like new status. I believe it will have a great life and appreciated for many years now. Glad you shared it with me.
