    I love the candor and knowledge of the narrator/owner. He comes off as competent and honest...something you look for in a good contractor.
    Is it just me or does anyone else enjoy watching good honest folk working smart and hard at making stuff with their hands? At any rate great job Odell! I just may call you guys!

      Damn right! Too many cowboys out there. What would be humourous would be the same video but with a voice over by a dishonest contractor for entertainment purposes (but could also help educate us on things to look out for).

    Very impressive! It's funny how there is the 'best' in every industry. You want a guy like this to do your heart surgery, your accounting, your auto repair... one that is meticulous, knows what worked and didn't work from experience and does it the best way. The scary thing is that I know if I hired this guy it would be done right, but I don't know what I would get with a heart surgeon. All I'll know is that he went to school and got a medical degree... won't know if he is one of the worst around or the best.
    So you drive by this house and think, "that looks nice" but you have no idea what went into it or that it will look just as good in five years unless you saw this video. Well done! And two great videos to watch from beginning to end. All I'm doing it making a retaining wall to keep my soil on my side of the fence, and got off on this great tangent. Thanks for taking the time to video this project... that too takes a lot of work, including the narration!

    Nice work Dave,
    Ive found when working with panel stone its better to work from top most part of grade down to the bottom so your cuts arent as visible. I use ardex x77 which is a modified thinset mortar and put maybe 1/8"-3/16" of mud on the back of each stone. They stay right in place. Ardex makes alot of great products including this 8+9 material that works well to weather proof scratch coats and creates a very coarse bonding surface. Another advantage is your work is guaranteed and if the stone fails from water damage the company will reimburse the home owner for the project. I love ardex products, coming from using conproco type s and admix the coverage and strength of this new product is night and day. Enjoyed the video, keep them coming!

      Thanks for the information.
      I'll give it try.
      I found with most coating products when push comes to shove on the warranty. These coating supply Companies want you to be a certified for there product. which means taking there class where every it may be held and paying the fees, plus you'll need to update your certificate every year $$$$$$
      if this certificate isn't up to date the warranty is no good. Hopefully that Ardex dries instantly because if I start at the top I would have to hold stone there for along time otherwise the stone will fall to the bottom.

      @witzYT Před 7 lety +1

      Odell Complete Concrete Actually its non sag when you install it. Ive started at the top of run and pressed and shaken the stones into place with +/- 1/16" movement. Its good stuff and cures quick.

    • @witzYT
      @witzYT Před 7 lety +2

      The thinner layer of mud on the stone the closer you are to the substrate, less material less movement from sag, but the strength of this stuff allocates a demand for less material and in essence less waste.

    This is awesome and I plan to do this at my house! We also want to put stone veneer on our house and I've noticed that in some of the videos I've watched, sometimes they use some kind of metal mesh before applying the stone. What is that mesh and why don't you use that on the planter? What circumstances would you use that? Since it isn't in EVERY stone-on-house video, I've wondered if it depends on climate, state building codes, or maybe it's the weight of the stone?

    • @specopstrader
      @specopstrader Před 7 lety +3

      Laurie Clarkson the mesh you are talking about is called metal lath. The lath is used when you are applying stone to wood surfaces, i.e. wood pillars at the front of a house, or the face walls of a garage that just have OSB on them. Before the lath is stapled or screwed on, you have to apply some kind of water barrier to protect the wood. In most applications 30-60 minute roofing paper works great.

    It might be wise to add a waterproofing membrane on the back side (dirt side) of that concrete wall. It helps prevent the water traveling to the back of the stone, causing separation between the mortar and stone because of freeze-thaw cycles. Great work though, that's a good looking veneer job!

      It depends where you live, rainfall, soil conditions etc but where I live, if you build something like this you would absolutely incorporate drainage or you will have a pool and water held right next to your house. in my area if you go 6 inches down its non-absorbent clay, you need a lot of surface are to absorb rainfall, or if you build a structure like this you need to run out drain pipes in gravel trenches.

    What is the difference between mortar and Thin Set? Is it better to use Thin Set instead of Type S mortar to attach veneer or real stone to cinder block? I hired someone to build a small (4 foot) rock wall. He attached real stone to cinder blocks using Type N mortar. That was 2 years ago and now most of the capstones have come off. So Type N wasn’t strong enough. What kind of mortar or adhesive would you recommend to glue them back on? I live in Maryland, so we get some heat and cold, but not extreme. Thank you so much for your help!

I also have pillar style on corners that taper outward, not sure if its done with wood frame or foam. If its foam, what do should I do or use? Is it strong enough? Thanks.

    Thought you had to use a bonding agent when applying to painted surface

      I learned to wire brush painted cement so that the stone would stay stay on longer, it does take some time but if it's your house, I really recommend doing it

      Should of stripped the paint rather but it will stay for a good few years as long as it not a very wet place..

    Just a suggestion. If you level the soil and lay the boards that are 10 inches that you previusly used, they will give you a nice level surface to keep leevel the bottom of the stones, then you have not to use the stakes at the bottom.

      If the paint is good go for it. Probably need to get aggressive with some pressure washing first. Use some glue on the stucco as you go.

    Can you use this method to install onto the foundation wall of the house?

    WOW! Thanks for the awesome play-by-play! I just got a bid from someone to do my backyard and I can't even come close to affording it :-( So I told my husband I'll be watching CZcams a lot to learn how to do our own retaining walls this summer! Thanks to you, I have a more clear understanding of what I'm getting in to!!!! I feel both empowered AND scared!!!! LOL! Too bad you're not up in Monterey to help me :-)
    I had a question: my backyard is currently all sand (we live on Fort Ord near the Dunes), and we have Redwood fences dividing our property from our neighbors' properties. Do I need to do a retainer wall up against the redwood fence to protect the fence from rotting? I plan on installing this same sort of retaining wall as in your video, but the raised bed in your video is up against a house. I keep thinking that if I back-fill my planter up against the fence, it will eventually rot - what 's your input? Also, I have a lot of retaining walls and planter boxes to do - on top of a lot of sand which is not currently level, nor is it entirely compacted sand. how do I make a level wall when the sand isn't?
    Thank you for your time! And awesome job on that planter box!! It's beautiful!!!

      do a 4 sided retainer so it's not against the wood.
      if the dirt is above the floor, then add drains in planter.

    When cutting the stone panels lengthwise do you cut along the seam where they are glued together? Any tips for clean cuts?

      If it works out to a seam yes, other wise I cut where it will fit. Water saw probably best

    Hi, i am not planning to use stone on mine just bare concrete but i would like to texture the sides. Is it better to make some kind of pattern on the inside of the wood before you pour or wait and do the texture after the wood is removed and its still a little wet?

    Nice video man. Question do you have a video on building a retaining wall with footing on a slope? Vertical with down hill slope?

    I really like this. What size is this planter box (sorry if I missed it in the video) and what ball park would a job for just the planter box cost if I contract someone to do it? And what is the best way to look up contractors who does this type of work?

    I've been looking online everywhere and nowhere can i find an answer to my question. Maybe you can see this question and answer it for me. I have concrete already poured in my backyard (12 X 16). I'm planning on doing a retaining wall like the one above that you did but a smaller one for seating/bench. Can I do this wall right on top of the concrete I already have? Or is it best to do it on the ground against the concrete? TYSM!

      Will it be an actual retaining wall that prevents a significant amount of soil/rock from falling or just something like a planter? Based on what you said if it's even smaller than what's in this video you'll be fine pouring onto an existing pad- I would drill some holes for vertical rebar just to tie it into the slab and use some concrete bonding agent/primer. What you described seems much more like a cosmetic feature than anything structural.
      Retaining walls are used to actually retain a load- and those can't just be poured like what you want to do. What you are looking for would be more like a raised planter, which won't be a problem.
