FIRST TIME installing cement BLOCK wall. Learn from my MISTAKES. WINNI

  • This was my first time installing cement block. I was intimidated in the beginning about this whole process as i have never done this before. When i started to lay my first few blocks, I did not feel very comfortable with the tools or the process! But I pressed on and block 8 or 10 i felt much better about it.
The key to installing cement block for your block foundation is to get the consistency of the mortar right. If you have that mixed properly, it becomes much more workable.
I hope that you enjoy this video on how to build a block wall foundation.

Great job and really appreciate seeing someones first attempt. I'm researching every video I can find before attempting my own block work. This has raised my confidence levels. Thank you.

To make it easier on you when grouting you can make the blocks into knockouts to make it easier to dump buckets in rather than the single cells. It would also be less mess.

Excellent work! I tackled my first masonry project last year and it seems wayyyyy more intimidating than it actually is. It’s a far more crude process than some other trades. Grip strength is a must! I remember my hands being sore for a while after my first project

Make sure you use a waterproofing on the exterior of the block that coats down over your slab edge. Masonry units absorb moisture.

Nice work. Only suggestion to make things easier is using a string line for each course. It makes things a bit faster.

Good work, much better than most on their first time. A couple tips:
Avoid building corner leads or leads in general when possible. Just “spot” a block on each end to your chalk line, level/plumb and make sure they range by hooking up a line. Use a level across the top for first course while laying them to the line then just spot the ends and lay to the line for the remaining courses.
Building leads with a level, unless you’re a vet, is a good way to create unnecessary issues in the wall.

Good job. Just one thing. When you lay down the mortar for the first course, dont put it on the trowel like laying a regular course. Sort of heap it on the board and cut a "sausage" off, and place the sausage down. Thats it. Dont play with it anymore or move it around.

Well I enjoyed the video. Work definitely looks professional.
Video states you did the research so we don't have to. Could you provide instructions or a link to instructions?
Can you provide a written tutorial or supply list and tips and tricks and the reasoning or why.
Lot of time instructions are provided but then experiential tips and tricks are required to circumvent issues that arise due to variation.

Possibly some details like using an excess of cement between the blocks, as well as failing to put down sand on either side of the wall so falling concrete doesn't stick? 🤷🏼‍♀️ Those are things I've seen done very differently by professionals that regularly use this construction method. But those are relatively minor details, comparatively speaking.
