That whole competition was unorganized as fuck. I have the book of the Greek presenter at the time, and she mentions how the music in Carola's song basically cut off near the beginning & Carola amazingly continued like planned with just the stage sound & when the general sound came back, it caught her perfectly in-step. Who has never watched (or suffered?) the Festival of Sanremo can not understand all these digressions, incessant palaver, interruptions, the whimsical and casual side: it's Italy and this is what makes its charm . As for the vote, it was really captivating. Very good songs (France, Israel, Spain ...) quickly established themselves and finally ... unfortunately it is once again a little rhythmic catchphrase, heard so many times on Eurovision, very visual but soulless that has imposed itself thanks to a completely mind-boggling stupidity regulation. A tie is a tie and we do not hack to leave, in the end, a bitter taste of misunderstanding and injustice.

When voting was fun! Many good songs that year. The French and Spanish song are Eurovision anthems even they did not win. Also Swiss Greek Cypriot Israel Maltese entries were one of the best that those countries sent. Probably the last original Eurovision song contest after that Yugoslavia was dissolved (1992 last entry), Luxembourg departed (last entry 1993), Italy departed (last entries 1993 & 1997 until 2011), 1998 end of live orchestra, in 1999 language restriction lifted and the result is to have a political circus song contest than more united European song contest. Now there are lot voting rings: Scandinavian bloc (Norway, Swede, Finland, Denmark, Iceland), Greek Cypriot bloc (Greece, Cyprus), Eastern bloc (former communist states), ex Yugoslavia bloc, the Balkan bloc, Muslim immigrants in Europe voting Turkey, Azerbaijan or Albania, the Turkey Azerbaijan bloc, Romania Moldova bloc, Did I missed anyone? Now Eurovision is more unfair, political, just another contest and it sucks

All those changes you point out ruined it. I would also say I miss the old days of them talking to them over a phone it was quicker. Now it’s all they babble on and you can see their faces etc it’s just crap plus I hate how they’ve done away with announcing each point and just go straight to saying the 12.

I am annoyed that France only managed to lead once during the entire voting, but this is still one of the most exciting, unpredictable votings ever. And towards the end, when everyone had written France off, only for them to scoop the last 12 points and throw everything into disarray, was absolutely golden. Had the modern voting rules been in effect, France would've won, too. What a shame.

What many people seem to fail to understand is that this contest was organized in a bunch of weeks because it was moved from it's original location for safety reasons, so they were lucky to have rehearsals at all :"
Maybe if they had gone through with the original plan of hosting this in Sanremo they would have had more time and things would have come out more smooth, though for Toto honestly I don't guarantee, I think he would have improvised anyway lol

It does seem very ad libbed and improvised on the host's part, but something tells me that's not their fault at all 😂 Plus I've heard they're pretty normal by Italian TV host standards. But I'm British so what do I know ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

@@casperrabbit7254 I don't know, have you ever watched any Italian tv? I'm Italian and I can swear to you we have extremely talented hosts and even if you watch Sanremo, yes, it lasts 5 days non-stop, but it is extremely professional in its hosting nature (it could also be a cultural thing to be honest? I don't have much knowledge about tv from other countries, but good hosts do tend to improvise a lot here, they do it in a good way though and it's part of their being talented, I don't know if I'm explaining myself well, but, not the kind of improvising you see from Toto lol)
What happened in 1991 was a mixture of bad organization, not enough rehearsals, the fact that Toto and Gigliola didn't really have hosting experience, and the fact that sadly no one in Italy outside of the die-hard fans really cared for Eurovision in those days (1993, only two years later, is when the rumors started that RAI was going to do everything in their power to assure 1) that we weren't going to win again in the near future and 2) that we would withdraw for good as soon as we could - which happened to be in 1997 when Jalisse had considerable chances to win and RAI got Vietnam flashbacks and started shitting themselves lol)
Italy's history at Eurovision has very interesting highs and lows :"

I have watched euro vision since 1984, and 1991 was the only time we had real chances to win, even if we came second in 95, but Anabel Conde never led the scoreboard. Sergio was leading for a while as the votes were being cast, so that's why I say that's the only time when I felt my country could win.
