How I'm Removing Stamps Hinged In Albums

  • I have been transferring lots of stamps into my Mystic albums and have unfortunately damaged a few. I was looking into a better way to unhinge stamps from albums other than pulling them off the pages by the hinge.
Some people use "stamp lift fluid" on the stamps after removing the pages from the album. That does seem to work, but, I had an epiphany that I might be able to slip my exacto knife under the stamps and just slice the hinge.
It has worked well for me so far. I've only done a small amount of research into unhinging stamps from albums so there could very well be a better method out there for sure, but this is so easy that I wanted to share.
I was having to pull way harder than expected to get stamps out of this particular album. I had to squeeze the tongs so hard to get a good enough grip of the hinge that I felt I might bend my tongs, lol. It all just felt wrong and so this is what I've come up with for now :)

Excellent way to do it! I will soon have to remove such mounted stamps and if they are resisting I am definitely going to use your method. Thank you for sharing, Kyle!

Great tip! Thanks for sharing. I'm currently fighting with some stamps I'm trying to remove from an album, and I'm definitely going to try this.

Hope it works for you! It has sped me up big time and it feels good knowing im not pulling too hard on these poor old stamps :D

All you need do is to slip the tong blade under the stamp, at an angle, then hold the stamp down as the tong cuts the hinge. That way one doesn't have hinge "selvage" remain on the stamp.
'Course, if one knows better, one goes to the extra expense . . .

I have used a little Exacto Knife for years. It works well, but you have to be careful not to cut the stamp.
I almost never have trouble with used stamps. Worst case is to soak the used stamps off the page.
Do you have any suggestions for Mint Hinged stamps where the glue on the stamp is stuck to the page?

I have no idea if this works but heptane would be the only thing I could suggest because it works for self adhesive stamps. I don't Know enough about how heptane effects a water based adhesive to be confident in my suggestion though.

Great way to remove hinges mint stamps. Honestly, if I ever get an album such as this I’d just take out all mint hinged stamps with the method just shown and then take out the pages to soak the rest off. So far I’ve only had the results of people taking stamps out of albums. Always wondered whom owned them before me and in how many albums they’ve already been. Recently I’ve been cleaning stamps that I think someone just ripped off the envelope and put into an album without soaking them. They’re definitely used and not CTO’s, but have paper, a hinge and sometimes even a little gum still on the back.
Another thing I find interesting, even if it decreases the value of a stamp is stuff written on the back.

Thanks! Yeah, who knows who has had the stamps or where they've been. Some make the journey from collector to collector. I am usually sad to see writing on the back, however, it is usually the scott number which saves me the trouble of identifying them hah

I think the handwriting is kind of neat. And if it has a hinge to boot I can with certainty say probably two or more collectors have had this stamp in their collection before me.

After you have removed the stamp from the page with your knife - do you then soak the stamp to remove the part of the hinge left on the stamp or do you leave it as is ?

Its the newer stamp hinges that are really awful, the older ones pop right off in the lightest way possible.
Question: why are you trying to save the pages, these look like Steiner pages which you can print off fresh?

Agreed, I just finished removing the stamps from an older album and it was SO much easier. I'm not saving the pages, if I gave that impression, it was unintended :)

Do you remove the rest of the hinge that is left on the stamp?

I have not made the effort. I do know many people will do so but I havent looked into it yet.. just trying to get them all in the new book pretty much :)

hey, mr. ham handed, what you gonna do if you have a $100 CV mint stamp 3/4 stuck down on the page?

    • @KylesStamps
      @KylesStamps  Před 2 lety

You can soak stamps off if they were so horribly stuck.

@@KylesStamps hope you didn't take offense to me calling you mr.
old timers would use one of the stamp lift fluids to loosen the gum, and preserve the album page as well. at best the stamp would be hh, or mint with gum disturbance. try on a few junk stamps first to get the hang of it. there are other faster, better ways, but involve chemicals that are now outlawed. work carefully and slowly and you might get 5 to 10 for that $100. stamp.☝
