A Method For Putting Self-Adhesive Postage Stamps In Your Album

  • This method is one way to handle the problem of self-adhesive postage stamps sticking to everything. I found this method a couple years ago online. I wanted to do a demonstration sharing my current favorite way to remove self-adhesive stamps and apply them to polypropylene which provides a non-stick, clear backing for the stamp. I hope this information is useful.

    Good idea, now I have a use for those stock envelopes. Self adhesive stamps definately hurt the used stamp collecting hobby.

    A great idea Kyle!!! Our Australian self adhesives are really hard to remove from paper, as are British stamps. Both remain very sticky after removal. Both counties also deliberately weaken the stamps by cutting chevrons or other shapes into the paper. If you are not really, really careful they tear!!! Best wishes from Queensland, J..

    Thanks for the neat idea! Definitely much easier than having to scrape the adhesive off and less risk of damaging the paper. Thought I would mention one of the advantages of removing self-adhesives with solvent (Bestine, Heptane, goo-gone, etc.) is that the ink of colored envelopes (like the one on your video) doesn't bleed into the stamp. This was a major problem with traditional gummed stamps and water.

    I don't find self-adhesives stick to my Vario stocksheets. I simply soak them in water and then to dry I turn them face down on paper ( a paper towel is fine) and then after a ew mnutes place LIGHTLY over it a cotton towel. Keep it to dry overnight and you have a used self-adhesive stamp you can put into your album.
    What your method does which mine does not - it reduces greatly the paper crinkling somewhat when drying out with water. Seems the heptane keeps the stamp pretty smooth. But I also woudl think the Vario stock sheets would be fine to store your stamps. One other advantage of your method over mine is your storage material is cheaper - Varios I love but they run about $1.15 - 1.30 a sheet.
    Thanks for sharing this.

    Thanks, Kyle! Excellent method! Love it. So far I just saw the information of removing the gum or cover it with talcum powder as you said. I think I am definitely going to go with the method you showed. It is so neat and tidy. Almost enhance the stamp. Just one question: is it pretty certain that the gum itself will not influence or deteriorate the stamp itself over time?

    • @KylesStamps
      @KylesStamps  Před rokem

      I know old gum formulations used to sometimes ruin stamps over time so they would remove it. I honestly don't know if the same is true for the gum on recent self-adhesives!

    I love this idea! Thanks for sharing. But it got me thinking.... since the stamp isn't fully adhered to the plastic, is this a way for collectors to more easily collect mint self-adhesives? I've been buying a whole sheet and using all but the ones I need, making sure to leave space around so it can be cleanly cut out. But you can imagine how cost-prohibitive this is. What are your thoughts?

    • @KylesStamps
      @KylesStamps  Před rokem

      I would see no reason not to use this for mint self-adhesives as well. I would just be careful when peeling original backing off and transferring it to the polypropylene to keep it "mint".

    • @KylesStamps
      @KylesStamps  Před rokem

      I have been thinking more about this and have an idea stuck in my head: After transferring to the large polypropylene sheet, instead of cutting them out individually, one could stick multiple stamps to the large sheet, spaced apart in rows, then slip the whole sheet into a sheet protector and write info directly on top of the protector sheet. Just a random thought that popped into my head. I guess it would only work for people using binders.

    Easy way, use lighter fluid. Put small amount of fluid in dish and put stamp in fluid with glue side down. This will melt the glue and not harm at all. Thank You all.

      d-limonene is very effective and non-toxic. While gum is wet, scrape off residual with plastic edge (credit card). Very safe. Clean non-sticky stamp just like the old days with water soluble gum.

    • @KylesStamps

      That ruins the stamps. I suggest "hinging " them into the album instead or better yet using something called "mounts". you can google stamp mounts and hinges to learn about them.
      Hinges still adhere to the back of the stamp which devalues them but they are dirt cheap.
      Mounts don't damage the stamps at all but are more expensive. Either one would be lightyears better than using a gluestick.
      The point of collecting stamps is to preserve them. Ultimately, people collect stamps however they want but I think you should know you render the stamps completely worthless by putting them into an album with a gluestick.

      Ventilation is the key whenever you are using any chemicals, including household chemicals. There are alternatives, you don't have to use heptane if you didnt want to.
