Framework is a company that was set up to basically do the opposite of Apple- they make laptops that are specifically designed to give you the freedom to repair, replace, upgrade, and improve your devices! They sent me their latest offering, a 12th gen intel upgrade kit for the Framework Laptop. When you look at Framework Laptop vs MacBook Pro, the comparison is certainly interesting! Right to repair, upgradability, and modularity are key to Framework; Apple, not so much. Today let's take a deep dive into the Framework and see what it offers!

To all of the comments who are going to say “Windows sucks” or “Apple sucks” just stop. You are missing the whole point. We want the whole industry to move forward with the ability to repair devices and that only happens if we as consumers work together to push companies to make us better machines. Stop the “us versus them” mentality. It’s childish. I respect that even though Luke is an Apple fan, he is able to acknowledge when other companies are doing things better, in this case repairability. Great video!

I have two opposing thoughts in my brain - a) I can never see myself buying this laptop b) I really want this company to succeed and do well

The Framework laptop is what modern laptops should’ve been, portable PC’s. You can upgrade them whenever you want, and customize your machine however you like, rather than buying a completely new machine when a new one comes out.

This Framework idea is brilliant. Reminds me of a Steve Wozniak approach to technology. Definitely something the industry has been missing for too long.

  • @watercannonscollaboration2281

The magic of Framework for me is they managed to do this on a laptop with a very portable and modern form factor

They tried a similar concept in 2003. It failed hard, because companies gave up on making upgrade parts for it. If that happens with this, its fate is sealed

The little logo on the top right corner of the 3D printed case is the power button. It physically engages the PCB mounted power button when pressed.

I've had my Framework laptop for a couple months ... Absolutely love it! The DIY option wasn't just "Here's the chassis and everything that goes inside it." All I had to install was the RAM, Storage, and WiFi card ... that simple. Some things were a little sub par with really early models but they upgraded for newer ones and you have the option to purchase those upgrades and do them yourself if you choose. They're sleek, easy to work on and the chassis will last, and you can repurpose the cpu when you upgrade. It potentially will save you money in the long run.

The 3D printed case does have a power button, it’s the circle thing next to the wifi antennas.

It is incredible that we are amazed by things that should have been designed that way since a long time ago. I remember that old computers were very modular.

So I've had a Framework for a while now, batch 4 from last year's launch, and as a diehard MacBook user, it's pretty great. It's got it's flaws, and I'm not blown away by it like my 14" MBP, but it's the first Windows/x86 machine I've bought in YEARS, and it's pretty fantastic.

As someone who has had 5 mac laptops, I bought a batch 10 Framework Laptop. I absolutely love it, it's not quite my daily driver but I take it on my many work trips and I'm not disappointed with it. I even get a few enquiries when I'm working in a coffee shop from Joe Public and also colleagues around the world. Yes it doesn't have the polish of a Mac, yet, it is a first generation product, however I think that's part of the charm. I put this laptop together myself and I have a deeper connection to it as a result.

This is just amazing that a company actually supports right to repair (and upgrade). I think I might just have to save my pennies and get their lowest priced model just to support the company. Put my money where my mouth is so to speak.
