From a Yankee fan, congrats Edgar! Great career. Never forget when you ripped Yankees fans heart in Game 5 95 ALDS. You saved baseball in Seattle. Now Griffey and Edgar in Mariners HOF. Ichiro is next!

@Hauger No he wont. He's a Mariner and I'm a Yankee fan. There's enough Yankee HOFs. He only played for a little bit. Everyone remembers him as a Mariner. That's where he goes to the HOF right with Griffey.

It lasted all the way up until 2001. The 116 win series that resulted in a loss in the ALCS is the most tragic season in all of Seattle's history. But the 90+ win seasons that resulted in them finishing 3rd in the division are almost as bad.

I lived in Seattle for 10 years back then, Edgar and later Ichiro were the best things about that team. I remember seeing him early one Saturday morning, near the ballpark as I was heading off on a camping trip. Probably going for his eye exercises.
It was too bad that the Kingdome was a rough place to play -- such a hitters park that no lead was safe -- and then they could never quite get the pitching together later. Should never have let Randy Johnson go.
Edgar was amazing to watch. The thing is he was slow as a snail, so he never got any infield hits. Any grounder, even deep in the gaps, if you just knocked it down, you could pick it up and throw him out. That makes his .312 lifetime average even more incredible. If he'd had anything remotely close to Ichiro's speed, he'd have flirted with .400 a few times in his career, imho.
He was also beloved for the goofy little commercials he'd do for a local hardware store. A class act all the way.

You have an award named after you. Which means you are the best at what you did. Should have been in 9 years ago. If you are the best at your position how could they not vote for him. The people that didn't have him on their ballet should never be allowed to have a say in the HOF again. The award is named after you. Baseball said you're the best that ever played (up until this point) that position. Having to wait 10 years is a shame. Rivera was happy when Edgar retire anyway:)

I'm so glad he finally got inducted, and it was silly that it took as long as it did. The debate was always about whether he deserved to get in solely as a hitter, which to me changes the discussion into a more fundamental one about the very position of designated hitter. If THE designated hitter-the player universally recognized as the embodiment of the position and for whom the DH award is named-couldn't have gotten into the hall of fame, then eliminate the DH position altogether and be done with it. If Edgar hadn't gotten in, that'd be pretty much saying no DH deserved to get in. It's either a legitimate position or it isn't.

How it took 10 yrs but Ortiz and Molitor got in on the first ballot just shows how dumb sportswriters are....
    People forget about Edgar..
Outside of Manny & Cabrera,(maybe Vlad) Edgar was the best RH hitter in baseball during that era. 312 career hitter, 418 OBP, about 25 HR/40 double power, stayed great up to his 40s.
His 1995 is one of the best seasons in recent years.

Edgar was a DH with a weak glove who got in on a last chance sympathy vote while others who are more deserving won't ever make it in ( multiple gold glove Don Mattingly, Fred McGriff, Bill Buckner etc ). He was a great hitter in his prime and fun to watch but 2247 hits and 309 home runs with a weak glove and a DH during his prime years doesn't belong in the HOF. This lowered the bar for future candidates.

@@xxxxbigrich5752 Sorry but a DH with 2247 career hits and a defensive liability to boot doesn't belong in the HOF. A last chance sympathy vote is what it took. Truth hurts.....almost as bad as watching the Jets since their one and only Superbowl in '69.

@@quarf53206 Did you read my post? Where did I state DH's don't belong in the HOF? I said a DH with 2247 hits ( a weak number whether you choose to admit it or not ) and a defensive liability doesn't belong in the HOF. He was a great hitter in his prime but doesn't have the overall career numbers to justify entry IMO. 9 times he was rejected entry. On the 10th and final try he gets in on a last chance sympathy vote. The HOF is supposed to be for the cream of the crop. Edgar belongs in the hall of good.

no DH who cant field a position and only can play in 1 league should be in the hall of fame

He played third base for 30 percent of his career, also u could say the same for pitchers and especially closers. Should Mariano be in then?

This is the worst baseball hall of fame class by far. No DH should make the hall of fame at all.
