My family lived for generations in Rotherhithe in Ainsty St where my dad was born in 1919. My greatgrandfather and grandfather were dock workers, Rotherhithe was very much a working class area in those days. One of my family members fell into the river by Sy Mary's Church and drowned leaving a young widow and children. I loved seeing the church knowing that generations of my family were there at one time. Thank you for sharing this video.

Superb well documented and presented history, I'm a suburban Londoner, but my late wife was from Docklands Savage Gardens and when drove thru Docklands before the new buildings rose up she say that was a yard, I used play there on barges, that were Dad worked she had such strong memories of the area, and worked in Shipping and Import and Export most of her life, she was proud of her Docks based East End Background, woe betide any idiot who commented badly on it without understanding it.
There is still so much hidden history of the world most famous and important Port City Financial City and Capital City, so much was entwined in Trade Export Import Finance InsuranceTrading..
Just reading the history of the port of London by Peter Stone a vast emporium of all nations..
Plus other on the this **City of Cities..**

My wife's family all came from Rotherhithe and this first film has given us a real insight into the history of this great place. Thank you so much for all your research etc.

Hi Michael, just wanted to thank you for putting together the History of Rotherhithe videos. Absolutely loved watching them. I have lived in the area since 1993 (initially on Rotherhithe St), my brother lived in Swan Buildings. Thank you for bringing the history of some of these locations alive. Great for posterity.

Great stuff,i am a Bermondsey Boy,born and bred so i just loved this.
But so much has changed.Mainly how the area has become desirable for wealthy outsiders!!.It is a very sad fact but true.
And The Neptune was the first pub i ever drank in and where i met my wife in 1980.
It was a fantastic pub in all respects.Unfortunately, as you saw,the pub has gone like many others in the area.

Great video. Thank you. Whenever a black cab driver heard I wanted to go to Rotherhithe Street, he'd invariably say, "Did you know...?" Yes, I know it's the longest street in London. :-) Really enjoyed living there in the '90s, when it was still being developed. It could sometimes be scary at night with a bit of a them and us attitude from the estates, but I never came to any harm.

Superlative in every respect Michael, I enjoyed you presentation immensely. As informative as it was atmospheric and, at times rather saddening. Have we as a nation really progressed I wonder, just so much of our glorious past and industrial history cast aside. Yes, I accept that working and living conditions were harsh in times gone by but has it all gone too far the other way now!

Very informative film. Captures the contrast of the historical with the contemporary really well

Thank you for a well researched and presented piece of nostalgia...My beloved country as it used to be, before the ( Westminster ) lunatics took over the asylum.
