I worked in the mixing room of peak Freans in the late 70s doing the night shift. It paid well at the time £110 per week. I was on a working holiday at the time.

Superb well documented and presented history, I'm a suburban Londoner, but my late wife was from Docklands Savage Gardens and when drove thru Docklands before the new buildings rose up she say that was a yard, I used play there on barges, that were Dad worked she had such strong memories of the area, and worked in Shipping and Import and Export most of her life, she was proud of her Docks based East End Background, woe betide any idiot who commented badly on it without understanding it. There is still so much hidden history of the world most famous and important Port City Financial City and Capital City, so much was entwined in Trade Export Import Finance InsuranceTrading.. Just reading the history of the port of London by Peter Stone a vast emporium of all nations.. Plus other on the this **City of Cities..**

The Peeks! From nr Loddiswell in South Devon. Hazelwood House a wonderful old Victorian country house. A hotel until recently now private again. The architecture all carrying the strangely noticeable quirk of having a round window in every gable. I used to stay at the old farm nearby and the converted barn had that round window. I often fancied it might be a nod to the humble Biscuit on which a lot of The Peeks fortunes were based upon. The first Peek also from humble origins became a Lord Mayor of London. Of The Freans I apologise, I know not a lot apart from the wonderful baked produce. Fascinating histories. ~Thanks for posting this video.:)

My family lived for generations in Rotherhithe in Ainsty St where my dad was born in 1919. My greatgrandfather and grandfather were dock workers, Rotherhithe was very much a working class area in those days. One of my family members fell into the river by Sy Mary's Church and drowned leaving a young widow and children. I loved seeing the church knowing that generations of my family were there at one time. Thank you for sharing this video.

As a boy of 10 years I lived in Clements Road directly opposite Peek Freans during the war years of 1943-45. The main entrance to the factory was then sited at the end of Keeton's Road. On Monday evenings we were allowed to a 2 hour Scout/Cub meeting in a workers gymnasium sited at the top of one of the tall factory blocks. Our house faced two of Peeks factory blocks and during the V1 (Doodlebug) raids my father and I sat on our front window ledge during the raids. WE watched for the V1 and if they approached in the gap between the factory blocks it was to the shelter outside the gap we watched them fly by and listened for their engine shut down and the bang. Another fact never mentioned is that Peeks kept pigs during the war which were housed in a compound in Clements road. They woke me up regularly each morning with their squeals at feeding time. What memories !!! Peeks P

Amazing that of all the pubs featured on parts one and two of this series only two remain in Rotherhithe St!!. They are The Mayflower and The Blacksmiths Arms!!. As mentioned on here there were 57 pubs in Rotherhithe Street in around the 1920s!.Now that is a really sad fact that this is no longer the case.

Great stuff,i am a Bermondsey Boy,born and bred so i just loved this. But so much has changed.Mainly how the area has become desirable for wealthy outsiders!!.It is a very sad fact but true. And The Neptune was the first pub i ever drank in and where i met my wife in 1980. It was a fantastic pub in all respects.Unfortunately, as you saw,the pub has gone like many others in the area.

Great video. Thank you. Whenever a black cab driver heard I wanted to go to Rotherhithe Street, he'd invariably say, "Did you know...?" Yes, I know it's the longest street in London. :-) Really enjoyed living there in the '90s, when it was still being developed. It could sometimes be scary at night with a bit of a them and us attitude from the estates, but I never came to any harm.

All ways thought of as a ruff area certainly deprived. I only had to listen to my Father. I found nothing but kindness when I worked there from the old residents that had gone through the war when the Docks were ablaze. Just full of history not only local but also world changing. Blessed is our inheritance. Thank you for posting. My Uncle John Facey (decoratedWW2) worked on the River. I remember him telling me about the spread eagle and crown and a few other river side pubs, all the way to the estuary. When bodies were found in the river where they were kept until the coroner were in formed. The rights of access to the river, of Daniel de Foe, of Dickens, pilgrims, the May Fower, and the splendid early mornings and sun sets on the river.

You show the South portal of the Rotherhithe Tunnel, but not the two air shaft buildings on the Rotherhithe side of the river, no’s 1 and 2. The two shafts on the river banks, no’s 2 and 3 were originally pedestrian access points to the tunnel, and still contain ornate iron staircases for this purpose, though they are long closed. I hope to walk through the unelected soon to see what is still visible. I recently walked along the riverbank from Rotherhithe station to see the surface building for shaft 2, the old red lifting bridge and next to it the large lock which I assume was an entrance to the Surrey Commercial Docks. In the river, just a few metres out from the bank and close to shaft 2 there is a cylindrical metal object sticking up out of the water, maybe a couple of metres across. It’s position relative to the shaft puts it almost exactly on the line of the Tunnel; do you have any idea what it is? Thank you for uploading these videos.

Hello Stephen, thank you for viewing my video, I’m really grateful, this video along with Part 1, 2, and 3 were literally put together as a way of showing my collection of photos of Rotherhithe from 2007, they were just sitting on my PC and always wanted to do a before and after theme the best I could with the pics I had. 🙂 The metal sticking out of the water is the remains of what used to be a “Dolphin” which was an aid for shipping and Lightermen, hope that’s helpful? Thank you for viewing and commenting - keep well and stay safe in these unusual times, all the best - Mike 🙂
