- In this video the Southwark council explains its plans for the development of the Surrey Docks after its closing. The council purchased Surrey Dock in 1977. The video discusses what to build, purchasing land, location site sizes. It looks at benefits, as well as problems that have surfaced in the process. What a wonderful piece of film. I love learning about the area.
How come we don't see council housing projects on this scale now........
Because since the Thatcher period there isn't the money or the will to provide state housing for ordinary people at a rent they can afford.
I now live in the area that they built.
My old man was a stevedore and worked the Surrey docks many times in the sixties.
plus 40 years and its all being redeveloped yet again
Actually those houses were cheap and nasty! My mother in law lived in one actually shown in this clip. She hated the place and couldn't get out of London quick enough.
