    A lot of pet content do not cater to third world countries, and I think it is important to connect with what options they have. In this video I talk about how adopting or getting a pet from an ethical breeder is not always an option! I also talk about other things that people tend to leave out when it comes to talking about and being an advocate for good pet care.
    p.s. I am still an adult, youtube.

    RE: Adopt don’t shop. I appreciate these responses a lot, but I think I also wasn’t specific enough on WHY it would be okay buying and needs to happen, to make change in third world countries. Being able to provide good care with only relying on an unfortunate system as an option, should not be discouraged in third world countries. Although the majority want to have the pets to enjoy and be selfish, being able to provide good resources to care for them is just as important as adopting. Without the access to ethical options, the change can only happen amongst providing good care. There will always be a growth of ethical breeders even if they have to make sacrifices to get their country to a better place when it comes to owning these pets. Distributing ethically always has to start somewhere.

    I am also a pet youtuber! I live in Brazil and in here we don't even have paper based bedding. We basically find only pine shavings in the pet stores. We need to shred soooo much toilet paper to have anything safe to use with our animals. It's sad, really. Now some small business companies are bringing aspen from Germany but it's so expensive... another thing is WE DON'T HAVE ETHICAL BREEDERS! The only ways to get hamsters and other rodents are buying from the pet stores or adopting from other people who don't want their animals anymore for some reason, or had accidental litters, or bought pragnant hamsters. It's not easy to do a good job as a rodent tutor in Brazil, really. We have no access to good produts. But I try my best to help our people to give the best they can to their pets 🥰🐭🐹

      Thank you so much for acknowledging this! People forget that options that seem easy enough for them, are fortunate to be in a part of the world that makes it easy for them. If you can't get paper bedding in stores, consider my technique: I buy unprinted newsprint paper from places like Discount School Supply online. Then I put it through a 16-page micro shredder to make my own low-dust paper bedding. It's not clumpy like store bought, so it actually stands up better for gerbils who are making burrows.

    You've brought up some really important points. I didn't realise how difficult good bedding and supplies can be to get in places like Mexico and Brazil, when I'm working on expanding my online store I'm definitely going to be making it a priority to make sure I can get good supplies over to your side of the world, the Mexican and Brazilian gerbs are just as deserving of good supplies as every one else 🥺

    im from brazil and it was really difficult to find ethical guinea pig breeders, the closest one i found is one hour away and they usually only have one-colored babies. the ethical breeder with multicolored piggies is seven hours away :') i still prefer having a single colored piggie from an ethical breeder than going for an unethical one, but multicolored piggies are really my dream.
    as for gerbils, im really, really struggling to find any ethical breeder at all.

    Hi :) hoping for some advice… I have a pair of male bonded gerbils. They are besties in their tank (sleep together, groom each other, no fighting or aggression that I have noticed). However, when they come out for play time/to roam, one of them gets more territorial and shows signs of aggression (although no injuries caused and it stops after a few seconds).
    Would you recommend letting them out separately for play time? Or should they always stay together? Someone recommended a play pen as the space of a whole room may be stressful for them, but they just run around the edge trying to escape play pens!

    • @PetConnectionInternational
      @PetConnectionInternational Před rokem +1

      Bonded pairs falling out for free roaming is surprisingly common, my own bonded pair have had issues, and my friend who runs a gerbil sanctuary has it too. Separate free roam time is one option yes, but don't keep them apart for too long, I'd cap it at 30 mins each with a few minutes in the tank in between, but watch them closely to make sure they're okay in the tank afterwards, sometimes pairs can have issues even after separate free roaming
      Something else that we've both discovered to work recently is the bathtub, even if other areas cause issues, pairs seem to be fine in the bath 🤷‍♀️
      Another thing that's worked for mine was just getting an entirely new playpen and using the towel from the bath with all their scent on it to transfer the positive association, when I removed the towel recently after Luna got a piece stuck in her teeth, they had fall outs again, but I was able to moderate it by adding a bunch of kitchen roll as flooring and a new foraging box, I think the distraction helped?
      Anyway, I'm still trying to figure out the whole free roam fallout thing, but these are a few things I've picked up so far, hope they can help!
      And if you want to talk about this more, feel free to send me a message on my Facebook page or Instagram, it's a complicated topic, and we're all kind of learning together I think 😅

    Hi Shine, I love that you brought this topic up, many people hop on coined terms without actually understanding how other countries don't have nearly enough options as we do here in the US.
    I got my gerbils from Petsmart, and was in the US when I did it, things are not easy depending on states and regional access. People that say adopt don't shop have a good mindset for the long term, but also don't realize others never have the option to adopt.
    Also even in other circumstances, the pet workers didn't just hand the gerbils off and said good luck, they made sure to educate me, on the contrary, when I have adopted pets, they were just looking to make room.
    A child almost adopted my cat, and she couldn't even handle a cat, and would likely get bored of the cat. I thankfully understand how to take care of pets in hoarding situations,.
    That being said, I think people should realize, that we are all human, and we can not guarantee that everyone that adopts is a good person, have a good pet education, or even if they have good intentions with pets. I know you are a good pet owner and they are lucky to have you, bought or adopted, you're a fantastic pet parent.

      Thank you for reminding me of why I made this video. If we simply deny the idea of buying in areas where it is the only option, we will not be able to give adopting, rehoming, ethical breeding… a single chance at all. It is a long term process of right and wrong morals, but one that absolutely needs help because it is not advised completely. Ethical pet care needs to start somewhere.

    Not To mention that not adopting is not going to stop the breeders from breeding that didn't continue to breed and these animals are just gonna end up in the stomach of a snake or other animals. Hi Shine! 🖤
    TLDR; Adopt don’t shop
    I agree with nearly everything you said, except for (of course) the most controversial topic of purchasing rodent species. As someone who lives in the US, I definitely have privileges and access to things that people in other counties may not.
    However, I agree with another comment that if there is a place selling small rodents then there are people rehoming them. Now I think I understand what you mean when you say that people shouldn’t have to deprive themselves of a certain pet just because of an unjust system of small rodent mills that breed unhealthy, sick and malnourished animals. But everyone has to think about what the cost is.
    Yes, you may believe that you are “saving” that animal because you are giving it proper care but you are enabling a system of neglect and improper small rodent breeding. In my personal opinion, no one is entitled to have a pet. No one is owed a living breathing animal. By buying a pet instead of looking for rehoming or breeders, that business now just has another open space for another poorly bred small rodent. And the rodent mills just have another space that they need to fill up.
    Everyone is entitled to make their own decisions and honestly as humans most of those decisions are pretty selfish 🤣 but there’s always a cost. So while people may feel like they shouldn’t have to give up having a particular small rodent species because it isn’t easily available, I feel they should also consider that by purchasing that pet, well intentioned or not, they are enabling a bigger system of animal abuse and neglect.

    • @M3LANAT3D

      On a personal note, I’ve been looking for about a year for a male gerbil companion for Artemis. There have only been females available for rehoming and/or adoption and I check Craigslist and pet pages nearly every day. I could easily go to a pet store and purchase a male gerbil, and that would be the easier option (for me and Artemis both). But knowing the long-term effects of that, I can’t do that in good conscience. I love Artemis and my pets so much I wouldn’t want to hurt them. And I know that if I were to purchase a gerbil companion for Artemis, I’m just further enabling a system of animal abuse and neglect for their entire species. It’s not an easy choice for me. But it’s the choice I make

      @@M3LANAT3D first off: ily. Remember that 😂 but you are also coming from a place of having that choice. Sure it could take years to find a person rehoming a pet, and that is better, even though that person already purchased from those horrible mills, adopting isn’t always free either so now you’re paying twice for that rodent from a mill. You’re also in a safe country though. We don’t have pet pages like that and it’s rarely ever in your area, let alone, a safe one. To make real change, we can’t wait for these opportunities.

    • @finsandwhiskers
      @finsandwhiskers  Před rokem

      @@M3LANAT3D for third world countries, it’s not about getting them being easy or not. They need real change, just like we need a way to breed Otocinclus fish to stop them from being wild caught. & as gerbils get older, it is harder to repair a social bond. But social animals are treated with a different priority, and that’s a whole other conversation.

    • @M3LANAT3D
      @M3LANAT3D Před rokem

      @@finsandwhiskers ILY too and honestly I probably wouldn’t have commented if I didn’t adore you as a human and really want to understand where you’re coming from.
      I know I won’t ever be able to truly understand because I simply don’t live in the same circumstances as you. I never considered what is required for ethical breeding so I can’t really speak on that.
      It is curious though about the idea of paying for rodent mill pets twice. I think that I agree that money sometimes can be an obstacle in purchasing pets. However, if the startup cost of a pet is too much, then that person isn’t ready for a pet. When you buy a pet from someone who’s rehoming, your money isn’t going to the rodent mills. It’s going to an individual person. And the pet you’re getting in return wasn’t wanted by that person anymore.
      Now about the need for bigger change, what are you thinking? Increased awareness of appropriate small rodent care? Increased amount of ethical breeders?
