Hi just a little tip doops need sand in their enclosure, as they bathe in it to help their fur kind of like how chinchilla's have a dust bath it removes the oils/grease, in the wild they are in a dry desert habitat. Try using sand 🙏🏻

Fattailed gerbil should have at least 12 inches of bedding so it can burrow.

They aren't burrowers like Mongolian gerbils. In fact ,most like to sleep on their back on top of the bedding

Im not sure that's true. They have burrows of up to 1m in depth in the wild. I think they do need 12 inches of bedding. @Gerbilgal

My goodness! This is such an eye-opening video!!! I had absolutely no idea that you should pick fat-tailed gerbils up while they’re asleep!!… I would’ve thought that would be like asking for your hands to be attacked! 😅
I only got my very first fat-tailed gerbil about a month ago and I really need your advice: my doop is 3 months old, very new in my home and seems afraid of me because he’ll dash off and hide the second he feels me touching him, or sometimes when I simply approach his cage, and he doesn’t want to eat in front of me, he’ll grab treats from my fingers and then immediately dash into his ceramic hideout….. What should I do to gain his trust and get him to allow me to pet him and pick him up?
Also, how can I pick him up while he’s asleep if he always sleeps deep inside his large ceramic hideout, which is shaped like a mushroom house…? I can’t even see him while he’s in there.
Any help would be VERY much appreciated!!

Sorry I haven't responded sooner ,I haven't been on here in awhile. I would recommend picking up the hidehouse with him in it to bring him outside his cage to interact with you. Most are territorial of their actual cage space so if they see a hand coming at the from above they are resistant to come to it or seem to try and attach your hand. That's why I either pick mine up when they are sleeping to remove them or I use a hide to gently scoop them and their hide out for interaction. I use an extra large playpen and sit in it with mine and they crawl on me. They also like flannel blankets when out of cage so I will throw one on my lap and they like to snuggle on it. Most times they like to eat in a safe place like a hide because instinctually in the wild they would be vulnerable while stopping to eat or groom. Mine will groom on me but eating they still like to hide and do but will nicely take treats from my hand .

@@Gerbilgal Thank you so much for all that expert info!!! 🙏🏻 Could I also ask whether you’ve ever had any aggressive + fearful doops and how you dealt with such a situation? I still can hardly touch my doop at all (only for a few seconds on his tail sometimes, while he’s busy eating a treat that he loves; after those few seconds, he’ll spin around and I’ll quickly pull my hand out of his cage so he can’t bite me) and he has now taken to sleeping in deep paper bedding underneath his acrylic wheel platform, so I have absolutely no way of getting him out while he’s asleep……. 😩 After tricking him into a glass jug with treats, then taking him out of his cage that way and putting him into a large plastic bin while his cage is being washed, he will still lunge at and attack my hand (I wear 3M work gloves during this as I’m afraid of his vicious bites) and I don’t know what to do anymore………… Please, PLEASE help me……..hardly anyone in my country knows anything about fat-tailed gerbils and the few that do strangely don’t want to share their wisdom!

@@Melovemouses I have only had 1 Doop who would sometimes nip and wasn't as comfortable with handling but I got her when she was older and so not sure she was handled much. Most doops really don't like being handled in their cage and do much better when removed from it for handling. After they have bonded well with you, they may come up to you once you open the cage for treats, food, interaction. You might want to remove some of the bedding until bonding is better established ,as I know this is recommended with Mongolian gerbils too. If the bedding is too deep when you first get them ,their inclination is to hide. Once the relationship is established then u can add more bedding. If you have a safe confined area where you can be with your doop at the same time so he can learn to come near u and that it is safe. I have the ex large play pen that I actually sit in with mine. If you are afraid of being bit I would throw a big flannel blanket on your lap. They love flannel and if they smell your scent on it,it will further associate safety to him . Then put some hides, toys, etc in there later and let him explore while you are there with him. Do this daily ,same time of day and gradually he should get more comfortable. Again try to time this interaction before the time he would start his wheel running at night because if he's a little sleepy at first,he will be more calm for your interactions. I hope this helps. Sending lots of love to you both ❤️

Hello, may I know what is the food brand you provide the gerbil to eat? Cause my gerbil is a picky eater, I have changed lots of brands.
