- Episode 2: We will be expanding on the PA tuning process. We will also discuss the iPFL in conjunction with exploring the importance of referencing for keeping our mixes on track.
Special thanks to @DaveRat for his wonderful out-of-the box thinking. Can't thank you enough for everything you've done for our industry!
Drew Thornton is the FOH Engineer for Billie Eilish and since the industry shut down in March, he started this project named A Sum of Two Busses. He will be diving into his front of house rig for Billie's live show. While using some virtual soundcheck he will be walking you through some of his tips, tricks, and approaches while demonstrating interesting things that the Allen and Heath's DLive console and Waves SuperRack has to offer.
His goal is to make some fun and interesting videos focused around live sound mix engineering, the Dlive, Waves Soundgrid and share some tips, tricks and theories regarding live sound.

Thank you for sharing your knowledge, Drew! I know I speak for many when I say it’s greatly appreciated.
Thank you!! I’m so happy people are enjoying it
Love these tips, many real world applications!
Good work again Drew. Thanks for sharing your approach.
Thanks for the episode! ...

Great job Drew!
Circle Three Designs Thank you dude!!
First of all thanks for sharing the knowledge we need and at 4:30 am I'm feeling blessed and lucky that i somehow found this tutorial. I am a fan of Dave rat and i hv seen all of his tutorials and when u talked about him in middle of the video, i read the CREDITS WINDOW AND it was showing FOH Billie eilish. I want to ask something about the console i hv is SI EXPRESSION 3. It is a basic console and as I'm new i only get this at venue to mix the bands... Can you tell me that how can i make more out of this console bcuz i feel like I'm doing a okay job and its not okay for me.... And thanks again Sir.....
I’m enjoying these videos Drew, seems we have a very similar work flow minus the waves inserts. Hopefully adding waves into the system in the near future. You running waves card in console slot, into switch then into impact server / MacBook? C1500 has been a solid touring console for me for the last couple of years now.
Dave Pickess I’m actually rocking my Waves card in my Dm0, and I make a loop that drops down to a fly rack 4u that has my two extreme server cs and my lake LM44. I’m also running into my lake via aes card from the Dm0 as well! Pretty slick, small and powerful!
Thanks for these in-depth videos! Really appreciate it! :) I'm wondering how you can use your LR for your whole Livemix. I would like to do it that way on my A&H SQ but I need the signal flow f.e. [Kick CH] -> [Drum Parallel GROUP] -> [Drum MIX] -> [PA MATRIX]. Because it's not possible to route a mix to the [LR BUS]. Is that different on dLive or do you just need one "layer" of bussing using the [GROUPS] and then go to [LR] directly? Thanks :)
"Because it's not possible to route a mix to the [LR BUS]"
Which console are you using ?
It's definitely possible on XM32 consoles.
So as far as routing, does your L/R feed your matrices and then those go out to your processors/amps?
Great stuff. As far as the sub and ff matrix, do you send both L and R to the mono sub matrix and mono ff matrix? Thanks man!
Absolutely! It’s the best way to get the right picture. But only send them -6db to account for summing.
Do you have a standard for where you keep your iPod volume for tuning? What app are you playing the reference track from? I often hear mixed opinions about tuning with compressed files from Spotify, etc. versus using uncompressed FLAC files, etc.
It really depends on your goals and how loud your show is. I would mix offline via virtual soundcheck, get a good mix, and match your iPod channels to your show. As for playback, I have an iPod touch I use which isn’t the best, but i use iTunes with .wav files for tuning. I also usually use that same iPod for house music via Spotify so no one has to sacrifice their phone. Lol
Come visit Alaska buddy

Are you not able to send only one side of a stereo channel into a Matrix?
You know I don’t believe it is possible if the input channels are stereo paired. I couldn’t find away but I could be wrong too lol
@@asumoftwobusses6304 It's certainly different on each desk, so that may actually be the case! great vid though
@@RyanOJohn thanks dude! 🙏🙏🙏
The source, stereo ore mono does’nt matter. with dLive you can send one side of a mix to a matrix. When you are in send to mix mode the pan is active. Now you can choose what pan you will do. It is that easy 👍🍀 thx for sharing your experience 👍🙏✅
I might be stupid but I still do not understand the function of the iPFL bus. You let your iPod come in dual mono (also don't understand why you'd do that? You want to send the mono sum to the mono sub and ff matrix right? Or do you send one side??) so is the whole and only reason so you can PFL your iPod in stereo (since if you PFL two mono sources it'll be mono)? And you can send a stereo signal around the LR mix too, right? What am I missing here?
From what i understand, his LR mix goes to the matrix, and the ipod is just another mix that goes to the matrix and that doesn't go through the LR mix, so that he can AB the LR mix and the iPOD.
