A friend saw this in the cinema, when it was shown simultaneously to the BBC ONE broadcast. She said the audience cheered at the twelfth Doctor's eyebrows, and went mental when they heard Tom Baker's voice.

That's precisely what happened in the showing I went to too. It was a completely full house and released the same week as Thor II. Minutes before I went to get myself comfortable to watch the 50th, I peeped my head around the door of the Thor II showing and there were only about twenty people in there, it was practically empty! Not only did the audience for the 50th clap and cheer at the moments you mentioned but the whole auditorium gave a round of applause at the end. I've only experienced that thrice in my cinema-going days and the other two being Jurassic Park and very recently, the new Top Gun: Maverick film.

One great thing about Tom is that he grew into that role. He gave up on some vice (which I can't recall) for the simple reason that kids look up to the Doctor and the Doctor didn't have that vice. That story told me everything I needed to about him as a person.

I have a little theory about the moment/bad wolf.
When Rose was the bad wolf in parting of the ways, she could see all of time and space and had absolute power. Maybe she was able to give the moment a conscience in order to help “her doctor”.
I know it could never have been planned that way, but I like the idea.

Loving the doctor who themed attire, this is one of the best episodes in new who, the crossover is done really well and helps to tell a story so not just a cash grab or anything like that. While its focus is more on new who I do feel like it celebrates the show as a whole and I can totally see people watching this seeing the old doctors and them doing at least a google search on them which is always good. This might just be how I see it but I see the episode saying that this always happened and that time wasn't actually rewritten, which makes the ending of season 1 even better because it can have all the character development but none of the "our hero is a genocidal maniac".
Fun fact, I used to watch doctor who until I went to uni (didn't understand tv license so just dropped all tv) so I never watched this live, I watched it for the first time in 2019 when I got netflix and decided to watch all who that was on it. After watching this I actually wen back and watched season 1 again and omg chris's acting and portrayal just comes off as even better

Here's a description of the Time War:
"At the heart of the War, millions were killed and brought back to life every second, on account of both sides' manipulations. The colossal death toll made the Doctor's TARDIS remember the Time War as "a war against Death".In the final battle alone, the Daleks numbered in the quintillions and fielded a fleet of ten million flying saucers. The Time Lords used over a million Battle TARDISes and other ships Time Scooped from their past, throwing their own people into the suffering as disposable soldiers and pilots who would be resurrected from death to be sent back into the fray."
Here's Deepa's description: "That looks very dangerous"

The first time I watched this, I watched it with a friend who, like Deepa, had only seen New Who. When Tom Baker showed up, I had to pause and explain why I was freaking out. This is definitely one of those episodes that require multiple viewings and a detailed knowledge of the show to fully appreciate, but still 100% enjoyable with minimal knowledge as well. That's pretty freaking brilliant if you ask me. :)
As for David Tennant and Billie Piper being in this, that had been announced weeks if not months prior, so those of us who followed the news were not surprised to see them, though Billie not actually playing Rose was a surprise. Tom Baker's cameo was probably the best-kept secret of the whole thing; I don't think anyone knew he was going to be in it.
I could wax eloquent about this story, but suffice it to say, I think this was an excellent celebration of 50 years of my favorite show. :)

You mentioned that they made Clara a teacher at Coal Hill School as a reference to the original companions, Ian and Barbara. But, another little "easter egg" at the 50th anniversary's start is the actual opening shot, which is a reference to the opening shot of the very first episode of Doctor Who (which shows a policeman walking past the exact same scrap merchant sign). One of the Doctor's first companions, Ian Chesterton, is also listed on the Coal Hill sign as Chairman.
And now, that Luke has brought it up... I really don't know if I like The Day of the Doctor or The Name of the Doctor better!! 🤔 I love them both so, I think I really just like them both equally in different ways. 😊

This is the episode I go to to cheer myself up, but as well as being a romp the Doctor is correcting a genocide and preventing another, so it has a very dark element too. The fact that it handles this theme with such a light touch, but without avoiding a proper discussion of wartime moralities is awe inspiring. And we had John Hurt plus Tom Baker as an Easter Egg. Ok first off I love the Peter Davison jumper and the Jodie Whittaker shirt.
The 50th anniversary when I first saw this at the cinema in Australia I was very excited it was the best day of my life and I love that scene where The TARDIS smashes into the Daleks as it flys off that was in my opinion one of the best scenes in the whole episode but I wish we saw more of the Time War.
Looking back it now though in retrospect and don't get me wrong John Hurt was a brilliant fantastic actor and he was fantastic as The "War" Doctor but I think they could had easily had used just Paul McGann as The 8th Doctor to fight in the war that would had made more sense as I always pictured the 8th Doctor to be the one that fought so that I was slightly disappointed to learn that he didn't.
The Classic Doctors should had appeared like for real instead of the footage although I know they aged and look nothing like they did as The Doctor they could had used de-aged make up or something and use the digital imagery of the deceased actors.
For the "moment" the interface it should had been Susan instead of Rose and I would imagine Susan would had been the closest to the Doctor than Rose was in my opinion they could had easily brought Carole Ann Ford back this felt more like a celebration of NuWho than Classic Who.
And also the lack of the villains they could had brought back Omega and Sutekh working together to cause chaos and have all the incarnation of The Master's together and have the Daleks and the Cybermen and the Sontarans working together that would had been a epic 50th so this whole anniversary was a real misoppotunity and it should had been 90 minutes instead of 75.
It was an OK special I just wish it was more it doesn't beat "The Three Doctors" or "The Five Doctors" in my opinion.
But I will also say it was awesome to see Tom Baker again it nearly had me in tears when he showed up.

  • @mjm3091
    @mjm3091 Před 2 lety +1

Well you do need to bring some chocolate Easter Eggs for next filming session. Unacceptable that you assumed she wouldn't want that and wouldn't think of actual food.
23:50 Technically there were 14 Doctors (potentially more if they ever decide to). Because Curator is strongly teased to be a future incarnation.
    24:45 👀
29:15 I don't think that is a controversial take. Multi Doctor episodes - we all love them, but they sometimes are not perfect and have to accommodate for a lot, making those episodes somehow wonky. Where as a cohesive finale will usually be better, because the build up is there.
However - personally, I don't even differentiate those episodes. For me that was a big event, multiple episodes kind being two parter story. Then the super fun side episodes with like 8th finally regenerating. When I judge it - I judge it all as one thing. And obviously there will be good and bad moments but up until now this group of episodes has been the best finale we had yet.
Obviously new seasons are coming and the finales are lovely (personally for me season 10th finale stands right now as the strongest finale).
31:15 Fun detail you forgot to mention - we already met Elizabeth, but Doctor knew her as older version of her and she was extremely bitter about something. We could probably guess it was Doctor running right after the wedding.
Also on that note - I loved Elisabeth in this. Kinda wish we had a past companion seeing the modern times. Because she was smart, she literally worked over the Zygons. Now imagine, if we had her go to the future on Star Whale deciding, if they should continue and forget or remember and face consequences.
30:30 I mean not to be extra mean. But let's be honest we could be spouting proper spoilers and Deepa would not connect it at this point. There is a lot of context she would be missing and probably would forget at some point the spoilers.

  • @stuartarmstrong5190

Hilarious that she didn't notice David Tennant's name in the credits! I thought - "Great, she has not been spoiled!". Then, when she sees him, she seems completely underwhelmed - "Oh, that's sweet". LOL. I also like the fact that Deepa has no issues killing 2.47 billion kids (plus all the adults) to wipe out the Daleks. Brilliant! Also, I don't really compare the Name of the Doctor to this because I regard the Day of the Doctor as a special event, not a normal episode at all. It is very much its own thing and obviously has lots of Easter Eggs etc. However, much as I love the Day of the Doctor, I probably agree with you that I prefer the Name of the Doctor.

I am past the age where 'hype' affects me much (and I think the use of so-called '3D' in films is overrated in general), and so I did not try to attend the local cinema event when it aired. But watching it, I knew that those who did see it that way were really given their money's worth, including an effective use of the 3D stereoscopy. Probably would have lost my hearing when Tom Baker appeared, though. And really, 'giving the fans their money's worth' is sufficiently unusual nowadays.

I'm with Lukeyread - I prefer Name of the Doctor. From the great pre-title sequence,to Clara hurtling back through the Doctors timeline (and hearing all those voices); to the revelation at the end....it feels a little more appropriate as a 50th celebration to me. DOTD is a lot of fun - but it doesn't really become a true celebration until its final 20 minutes.

Name would be too context heavy for the current series at the time I think to be honset

I like the Name of the Doctor better too :) Also, I feel like they had the Queen kiss him like that because she was the "virgin queen" so she doesn't know how to kiss properly lol

I didn't like the way the Zygons were used in this episode they were sidelined and treated like a joke instead of a serious threat which is typical Moffat.
