      @MadDaCube Před 2 lety +1

      Exactly. You can get a less-equipped 5 Series for 20k less and still end up with a more sophisticated interior than this i4. The base car is always the limiting factor. Interiors of higher specced models aren't manufactured differently than those of lower specced models - they're just treated with different surface materials and that's it.

    • @pedroteixeira4369
      @pedroteixeira4369 Před 2 lety

      Sure. The point of the reviewer is not that it looks cheap, it is that it looks cheap and it's not cheap. 3/4 series are cheap, they don't cost 90k like this one, and as the reviewer points out, if it's because it's electric, well, there are electric cars that are better for half the price.

    • @MircoWilhelm
      @MircoWilhelm Před 2 lety

      @@pedroteixeira4369 You can get a 90k 3-series, if you want to. But it will still be a 3-series. Most parts will still be identical to the base model. And that's the point. it's a cheap car with some nice looking pricy options.

      The i4 eDrive40 and the i4 M50 have essentially all the same components. There are some options available for the M50 that are not offered for the e40 like 20" tires and bigger brakes, but for most purposes they are the same car with the big exception of the M50 being dual-motor AWD. The M50 gets a lot more power from the second motor but sacrifices some range - 12miles between trims with same wheels.

  • @MadDaCube
    @MadDaCube Před 2 lety +2

    Some interesting insights but at the end of the day I don't really care how something was formed or processed. The end result in the Bimmer is objectively better than a Model 3. The materials feel softer and more premium and it's quieter and more sturdy feeling when you drive it. The Model 3 just skipped all the interior parts which are the most difficult to get right: vents and buttons. On things like the steering wheel however you see that the interior (compared to a Model S) was one big cost cutting exercise. The i4 interior is also not what you should expect from an 80k BMW. A 60k 5 Series will get you something significantly nicer. That's the problem of the i4 sharing the interior with 3 Series that start at half the price. It's a bit of a dilemma when you spec out a lower level car instead of going for the next bigger model with less equipment.

    • @DorkJelly
      @DorkJelly Před 2 lety

      Hard no. This has fake premium written all over it and Carl just layered out why. And you are right about not caring about how something is formed & processed, but just as high on the "not important" list is all the things that go into making something "look" premium like being softer or threading and blah blah blah. The end result is the Model 3 is a better car with a much better value because of the things that actually matter at the end of the day...driver experience. The Model 3 didn't "skip all the interior parts", They just packaged it better and made it more convenient. having less moving parts like buttons and vent shifter/shutters that eventually break and are the first to display wear and tear, is a MUCH better choice in the long run. The real luxury or as I call it Modern Luxury is in the integrated software. Thats where the real value is. Like controlling air flow of the a/c on the screen or having convenient and accessible menus instead of physical button everywhere. In the end, while new and jarring at first, the consumer gets used to these changes and then usually prefers them. Stepping into Legacy car brands feels like going back in time.

    • @paulmow9682
      @paulmow9682 Před rokem

      The difference in the quality of the steering wheel is huge. The convenience of being able to control functions of the car without looking for it on a menu is huge. A car isn’t an iPad. Even a split second distraction could make difference between an accident happening or not. BMW design choices focus on the driving experience. There is gadgetry, but not at the expense of that experience. It is a balance. Consider also Tesla’s decision not to offer HUD or Carplay/Android Auto. BMW offers it wirelessly which is again consistent with their philosophy on minimizing points of distraction. The driver doesn’t have to fumble around with connecting up their phone to the head unit.

    Great stuff!
    And you're right with your meaning that for 83k $ there has to be more luxury in that car!
    But you know ist only a conversion car, so BMW is not really on the way to BEVs. They still try to hold on Mr. Zipse's "3 drive trains on one production line strategy"! So in the same line they produce ICE, Hybrid and EV. That's extremely expensive and not very efficient.
    Thanks for your video!

    Carl, I’ve heard in Canada the Model Y starts at $CAD85K 🙀.
    Can you say it justifies that price to match what you said about this i4?
    I don’t think either is worth that kind of money, but people seem to have the dough…
    Great insights from you, thanks for sharing your expertise. 👍🏼
    I tend to look at interiors differently now after seeing what you see.

      How can you compare pricing from two different countries? To compare, add about $25K to the BMW in Canada. Furthermore, the tesla has MUCH more room for both passengers and luggage, accelerates faster and has more range. I won't talk about fast charging locations...

    When i was testing the i4 all the materials felt really good. The quality for me as a customer seems very high. When i compare this to a Model 3.... i prefere the BMW 1000 percent! But i dont look at the interiour as you do. I am just a carenthusiast 😊😊

      Yet Tesla use 95% of same materials as BMW does. So idk why people prefer other brands so much more but don't realise it's the same materials. 80k+ car with plastic parts in door and back of seats is a no go for me, surely not for a legacy brand as BMW. My KIA had full leather seats with full leather back pockets. That car cost 1/3 of this car price...
      For this car BMW ask for premium price for a standard design, putting fake carbon fibre on interior does not make it premium. 80k+ for a 3 series is just pricing themselves out of any competition. Feel this is just another EV platform they release to show they care about EV. But in the end they don't really care.

      @@pipooh1 Since everything that was reviewed on this i4 M50 in this video can be found on the base i4 eDrive50, would you say this is appropriate for a $56K car? This particular car they are looking at has nearly $10K just in paint, carbon exterior bling, and 20" range-sucking wheels options.

    • @pipooh1
      @pipooh1 Před 2 lety

      @@KurtSeiffert 55k is still too much. It has 3 series interior and a performance body pack. So it should be max 55k full option, with he EV rebate you prob looking at a 45-50k car, not 65k what a edrive would cost you. The 55k edrive has a stock interior and with german brands stock mean NOTHING. Add any options and m package and you easily hit 60k+ which is 15k above what this car should cost. Look at VW, they give same car while aiming 10k lower in price with the Passat.

    Congrats for this courageous criticism. Perceived quality, positioning, price is a complex equation. I understand that the brand BMW justifies the price more than the real quality of the components.

    You guys all seem to mention "French seams" a lot. What are they? Are they supposed to be better than other kinds of seams or do some people just think they look better? I've had my BMW for 9 years and I couldn't tell you what kind of seams it has because I don't really care as long as they don't fall apart.

    The black back plastic keeps shoe marks off that would show on light colors. The seat belts and kid seat tie-downs are black too. The fact that it is the first EV in the BMW M performance series makes you have pay +80k BEFORE dealer markups...

  • @handlealreadytaken
    @handlealreadytaken Před 2 lety +2

    That's pretty much the interior across the board for the 3/4 series cars and SUVs. I would not expect BMW to come up with different assembly processes for the interior based on overall price. They have hit both the 40k mark with all vinyl and the 80k+ mark with mixed material. Even the 5/6 class of vehicles take the same approach in a lot of ways. Most of the upgrades are in real materials (leather, carbon fiber, wood) and better gadgets.

    You can order blush leather seats which is all leather. Some EV owners don't want animal products in their car. It's the dual motor version. So it has a 12K cost over the RWD edrive40.
