  • Hey Everyone! In this video I show how I root my reborn dolls. I show the supplies I use, how to create a hair map, and how to root the hair. I've been a reborn doll artist for a couple years now and I wanted to share my knowledge. If you don't know what reborns are, they are realistic vinyl dolls designed to look and feel like a real baby. Many people collect them as they are collectables rather than toys. Some dress and display them while others use them for a more therapeutic reason. I tried to do a How to Reborn series in the past and it fell through, but I'd like to try it again now that some of my techniques have changed. Anyways, be sure to SUBSCRIBE!

    This rooting tutorial is amazing! I honestly don’t understand why some reborn companies don’t just root it like this because it’s easy! Then again it may be unafforable or they just don’t want to take time 😂 loved the video!

    • @MelissaFerrante
      @MelissaFerrante  Před 3 lety +7

      Yes! I always seal at the end with tacky glue. I pour a decent amount inside the head and brush around with a big flat paint brush. I allow to dry for a couple days until completely dry. Even with sealing the hair can still become loose if not gentle with it. And thank you!

    So do you let that dry before you do more rooting? Also maybe you can answer this question….how do you keep the hair you already rooted from getting tangled while rooting the remainder of the head?? Maybe my hair is too long when I’m rooting. 🤷‍♀️

    • @MelissaFerrante
      @MelissaFerrante  Před 2 lety +1

      Usually I'll let it dry a little before continuing so it's not as wet. And I've definitely found cutting the hair along the way helped with tangling, but also take into consideration the quality of the hair and the texture ( wavy/straight/curly) as that can play into tangles as well. Take awareness to how much pressure your putting against the doll while rooting as friction from the hair rubbing will cause tangles and breakage. I always root the back first then the sides and then the front/top. I hope this helped in some way.

    I too like this video more than others I’ve seen. I seem to have missed an important piece or I’m just not seeing what you are actually doing. Are you rooting into the lines you drew or filling in between them?

    • @MelissaFerrante
      @MelissaFerrante  Před 3 lety +1

      I'm using the lines as a guide for the direction of my needle. I root into the lines and in between, but like I said in the video depending upon how thick or thin you want the hair will determine the spacing between each hair "follicle". Thicker = closer together, Thinner = further apart. If going for a thin appearance I wouldn't draw in so many lines when mapping; and focus on the spacing in between the lines remembering the direction. And remember to stagger your hair placement; you don't want rows of hair. I hope this helps and clarifies things.

    • @MelissaFerrante
      @MelissaFerrante  Před 2 lety

      I just looked online and it said something about Aleene's Tacky Glue so maybe? But basically any craft glue that is good on multiple surfaces and an important thing is it has to be waterproof so if water drips through the holes when styling then the glue won't come apart.

    • @MelissaFerrante
      @MelissaFerrante  Před 3 lety +2

      Hi! I'm unsure about the paradise galleries babies, I don't think they can be rooted? I think they're a harder vinyl which may be really difficult to even try to root. Adding paint for more details might be possible, but I'd only recommend air dry paints.
      You could always look into getting a reborn that has those more realistic details you're looking for. check out my Facebook page facebook.com/melissasmiracles1/

      @MelissaFerrante  Před 3 lety +1

      Thank You! Typically over the rooting process the lines will start to fade a little and the hair will eventually cover it.Also, as you wet the hair to brush that will help over the process wiping them away. Hi Melissa. I am happy I came across your rooting video. Its simply the best. Really understandable. Im a new mommy in the dolly community. I have all full body silicone babies. My question is can this same technique be used on my baby girl. She is a really soft eco flex 20 baby. I have 1 bald girl and decided I want to root her.

    • @MelissaFerrante
      @MelissaFerrante  Před 3 lety +1

      Hi there! Thank You so much! From my understanding with the amount of knowledge I have working with Silicone dolls my answer would be yes! I suggest using chalk to map out your rooting design rather than the pencil. That'll be easier to work with and erase. Next, since Silicones you can't seal on the inside you want to root a little bit away from the end of the hair strand like in this video. You want to really push the needle with the hair strand deep into the silicone so it doesn't pull out easily. And lastly, the only other thing I would add to suggestions that differ from reborns is wrap the body/neck/face with plastic wrap since the hair and lint will easily stick to silicone. I hope this helps😊

      It is not the standard needle like for sewing. And you can seal it with mod podge or e-6000 although there are likely other options.

      @MelissaFerrante  Před 3 lety +1

      Some Vinyls are harder than others. Try using a heated rice sock. Grab a clean (white preferably) sock, fill with raw white rice (the amount can vary depending on head size), Tie an knot, Heat in microwave I usually do about a minute. Stuff inside the head and let sit to warm. This will soften the vinyl and make it easier to puncture. Remember to keep the needle straight too. I hope this helps!

    Can I use human hair on the doll? I couldn’t really find any good mohair for my doll.

    • @MelissaFerrante

      Absolutely! It’s just a little more difficult in my experience since the diameter of the hair is thicker but it’s possible. I buy mohair from irresistables.com

    • @MelissaFerrante
      @MelissaFerrante  Před 3 lety

      I buy from irresistables.com which come 10 in a pack and usually I'll order 2 at a time (20 needles) and I'm good for awhile but that all depends on if you're prone to breaking them. if so, I'd buy a little more. Other companies also sell them, just search Heavenly Illusions Pink Needles and they should come up.

      I purchased mine from www.irresistables.com and went with a light brown color but any reborn supply site should have them and there’s different colors too. I imagine all prisma pencils are pretty much the same.

      Sometimes. Some vinyl is soft enough where I can root easily, and some vinyl is hard so for those I do warm the vinyl with a rice sock.

    How long does it take you to root the full head

    • @MelissaFerrante
      @MelissaFerrante  Před 3 lety

      Between my work schedule and other orders I'm working on it usually takes me a few weeks. But it also depends on the size of the head, thickness of desired hair, and if the vinyl is hard or soft and easy to root.
      But in a different perspective, if I were to sit down and continuously root without breaks, I could most likely complete a full head in 1-2 days

    Do air dry paints come off if they get wet?

    • @MelissaFerrante
      @MelissaFerrante  Před 2 lety

      Nope :) Air dry paints when completely dry don't rub off but is still recommend to do a varnish to seal the paint. Air dry paints do however require a little faster working pace since once it drys it stays, compared to heat set paints which don't settle n the vinyl until baked and can be rubbed off with a little paint thinner

    • @MelissaFerrante
      @MelissaFerrante  Před 2 lety

      Depending on size, hair texture, hair thickness, and my work schedule could be shorter like 3-4 months or longer like 6-8 months. I have limited time to reborn and I prefer quality over quantity hence the wait time. That's on top of the couple months for painting

    how you seal the hair after punch

    • @MelissaFerrante
      @MelissaFerrante  Před 3 lety

      After rooting and cutting the hair, and I'm 100% satisfied with how it looks I use regular Tacky Glue, I drizzle it and spread it out with a large paint brush inside the head covering all the hairs in a decently thick coat of glue. I allow it to dry completely before moving on; usually takes a day or 2 depending on how much glue was used. It should dry clear so if its still white you know its still wet.

    • @MelissaFerrante
      @MelissaFerrante  Před 2 lety

      Hi there! Doesn’t sound dumb at all! I was born creative too :) everyone starts somewhere and even though my first reborn I thought looked so realistic, over the years I can say I’ve definitely improved lol. Mistakes are how we learn so don’t put too much pressure of yourself. And honestly the only way I would say this gets easier is by practice! You can buy solo vinyl heads to practice rooting before rooting your final painted kit. But I’ve found that with each and every doll I’ve done I’ve gotten better with each and the more you do it the easier it becomes. Draw out your map well and keep you needle following in the direction of your map.
