Carb cleaning on my 1995 Mercury 8 hp 2-stroke. Before cleaning, the motor would stall when put in gear, and would stall when the choke was disengaged.
THANKYOU. Spent 2 days already trying to find the float height, Information like that non existent. You gave it and explained how to measure it. My float was installed upside down before my ownership of engine and wanted clarity before installing carb.
Great video, John. Helpful and informative, and awesome 80’s music too! I have a 15hp, and this made tear down a breeze. The tips from other commenters are also really useful; what a good CZcams video should be! Thanks again for making it 👍
I was almost going to complain about your lack of tripod, but this video is so informational that the shaky camera is forgiven. I have a 1995 9.9hp that won't run in gear or without the choke, and you have inspired me to take apart the choke and clean it out. I can't find instructions to take off the carb anywhere online, but this video walks through step by step. Thank you very much!
Ive been looking around for how to to clean the carburetor and cant find close video on 9.9 mercury outboard and good thing i found your video cause my plan to take out will be harder .Thanks much and hopefully ill solve my problem on mine.
All I adjusted was the air mix screw (above the carb throat) near the very end of the video, and the idler screw. Turn in the air mix screw all the way in , and then out a turn and a half. That is what the manual says to do. The idler screw, I just adjusted til the motor sounded good.
Thanks to this video, I see I'm missing the tension spring off the fast idle lever. I liked the float height tip and the air mixture screw at 1.5 turns, to spec, mentioned in comments and the idle screw until it sounds good.
Thank you. I hope this helps me with my Mariner (same year and model). First time in 25 years it will not start. Getting spark and fuel so at the moment, cannot figure out why it's not starting. Plugs are less than 4 years old and look new.
Watched your video, very informative for me,when I put it back together gas started coming out the top plate in that little groove and flooded out what did I do wrong?
Great John, Thanks, invaluable!! Broke a screw though (whilst lifting the fuel hose) and choke is not yet functional. Adjusting the basic running speed would be nice if described (is that the screw behind the black plastic?) Funny, nothing was dirty in our case but motor ran without choke.....
are you sure you can safely use gum-out on an outboard carb? not sure if it's the same as carb n' choke cleaner, but that stuff can cause pitting in aluminum...
I've got exactly the same engine. doesnt start after the winter. rusty plug too. youve inspired me to start investigating. Nothing to lose. if youve got any tips or something from the service manual about condensation in the engine that got in the engine let me know. cheers.
Theres a nut that holds the bowl to the bottom of the carb, shown around 7:17. Once you take the nut off, you may have to tap the bowl with the butt end of a screw driver to break the seal. Good luck!
Bobbylockes- I dont see anything in the manual for condensation. The manual basically shows you how to take things apart. It does have have any diagnostic stuff. Good luck!
Hello, I am dealing with the same problem right now. Can you explain how will you remove the bowl from the carburetor? Thank you in advance for your help.
thank you John for this video. I'll try it tommorow! Because I had some troubleshooting. When I spray Carbu-cleaner into the carburator, it starts like 20 seconds and goes off. Everytime I try it, so maybe If I clean it just like you did, maybe that will help :) Greetings from Belgium
Great vid, thank you. Silly question here: that white plastic canister to which the incoming fuel line is attached, to the right of the carb, is that a fuel filter? I've tried to unscrew it to inspect on my merc 6 hp, but can't get it to budge, and didn't want to force it in case its not actually "openable".
Sorry for the first reaction but, it started right up then I heard a strange sound it stopped. and the little rod was not put back correct. Put it back correct but now the carb gets full of fuel by starting amd wont start anymore. What could be the problem?
Just wondering what's the factory settings for the idle? I have the air set to your turn and a half just want to get the idle right. And is it me or does this high idle on the controls just for show? It says turn left for slow and right for high idle that's the choke lever I turned it up and down and idles the same. But a clean carb made my motor stay running in gear now just want final adjustments on the idle done
Hey, thanks for the video. This is the closest I have seen to my Mercury outboard. I don't see a float needle on my carb and wondering if you can remember if your carb float had one? Im having drouble getting my 97 Merc. 6hp running. Please let me know if you can remember, I think this might be my problem. I got it 3rd hand from a guy who can "fix anything" but "didn't have time" to work on this motor. I got it to run on and off but it's obvious something's off. My carb is my fist look. Thanks please help
The key is the small slot on the right of the inserted piece. That slot engages with the pin on the lever assembly that depresses the blue button. When installing the choke lever and the part that it slides you have to pull the blue pin lever I mentioned back towards you as you slide the choke knob/slider assembly in. It is way harder to describe and very easy to do if you are looking for it. If the blue button assembly actuator is resting towards the button it won't go together, you MUST pull it back to fit it together.
Greg you saved my life, I just spent a solid hour trying to put the Choke assembly back in until I read your comment (have a slightly older Mercury outboard but it looks exactly the same as this setup). Not sure what you were on about with the Blue button but you just push the choke tab down when inserting the choke fixture and voila.
Добрый день а подскажите , почему почему дроссельная заслонка вытягивается в двух положениях.до какого положение нужно её вытягивать чтобы запустить мотор
after searching and searching here is what i found!! www.baads.org/wp-cms/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/Mercury_2-stroke_manual_PART1.pdf page 139 shows correct way to to put the gaskets,if anyone else got stumped! this page has lots of useful info
is it normal for gas to come out the diaphragm on the side of carb with the blue push button when i press it down and also when the motor is on idle its leaking out the hole, even when i pump the prime bulb it comes out the little hole ,, anything would help ,,thank you
Jesus!! Mercury 🤷♂️ that engine looks brand new and clean!! Your customers have to do this crap already? Wonder why them Japanese outboards are on the lake pushing boats and satisfying customers???
THANKYOU. Spent 2 days already trying to find the float height, Information like that non existent. You gave it and explained how to measure it. My float was installed upside down before my ownership of engine and wanted clarity before installing carb.
Wow, thanks so much for taking the time to do this. I have the same motor with the same problem, I am going to have a go at this later this afternoon!
Wow this helped me so much even 10 years later today, Thanks a bunch!
Thanks for sharing. Your guide enabled me to clean my carb and get my engine going again. Great 80's music too!

Thank you! I just rebuilt my carb and this video was a great way to start it!
Excellent help with a step-by-step guide to this job!! Your help was invaluable :-)

Don't you mean carb?
craig dundas Apparently I did mean carb. Thanks for the clarification.
;-) actually fixed my motor thanks to this awesome video saved me $200
This vid is so informative and saved me a bunch of money thanks john
Thanks! I got the same engine and this was a life saver!
same!!
Thanks man! I have a Mariner 9.9hp and this is the exact same procedure.
Thanks so much. I have a 9.9 Mariner. Fantastic.
thank you sir! I've got the same engine. I owe you a case of beer! cheers!!
Ya skipped the one part I needed. That little spring on the choke.
Thanks! I couldn't figure out how to remove the choke/prime knob so I couldn't get it out. This really helped.
Ive been looking around for how to to clean the carburetor and cant find close video

After cleaning and stalled it still not working🤦🏽♂️

Thank you! you saved me $100 bucks thanks again John!!
Thanks. Glad it helped you out!
Saved me Alot of money Thanks man!
i should've watched this before i worked on mine, great vid!!!!
Thankyou so much for this video
Very helpful, thanks
That little pin piece is the float needle. It goes under the brassy looking part around 8:37.
Thanks to this video, I see I'm missing the tension spring off the fast idle lever. I liked the float height tip and the air mixture screw at 1.5 turns, to spec, mentioned in comments and the idle screw until it sounds good.
Going to be looking at a friends 9.8 from the 80's(maybe? Not sure yet). Thank you for the good video.
Thank you. I hope this helps me with my Mariner (same year and model). First time in 25 years it will not start. Getting spark and fuel so at the moment, cannot figure out why it's not starting. Plugs are less than 4 years old and look new.
I have the same motor! Best fishing motor ever built
Laura Branigan - Gloria. Classic tune. Good station.
Watched your video, very informative for me,when I put it back together gas started coming out the top plate in that little groove and flooded out what did I do wrong?
Thank you for this very informative video. What do you use to clean the caburator? Best wishes, Olav, Denmark
thank you brother you save me a lot it money
hi John have you done a video on adjusting the linkages and the ignition timing?
Great John, Thanks, invaluable!! Broke a screw though (whilst lifting the fuel hose) and choke is not yet functional. Adjusting the basic running speed would be nice if described (is that the screw behind the black plastic?) Funny, nothing was dirty in our case but motor ran without choke.....
What's the factory jet settings?
All the gaskets were in good shape, so I reused them. No new parts added. I just cleaned the heck out of it.
are you sure you can safely use gum-out on an outboard carb? not sure if it's the same as carb n' choke cleaner, but that stuff can cause pitting in aluminum...

Hello nice video
Good luck ZaZu. Let me know how it comes out.
Hello, I am dealing with the same problem right now. Can you explain how will you remove the bowl from the carburetor? Thank you in advance for your help.
Nice video :-)
Your right! I never noticed that before at 6:40. LOL
What else do you need to adjust in the carb after you clean it?
Did you reuse gaskets? Any new parts installed?
Hey curious what year is that motor it looks identical to mine but my serial number is missing and needing to get a few parts aswell clean the carb
YOU GOT RICK ROLLED!!!!
thank you John for this video. I'll try it tommorow! Because I had some troubleshooting.

ZaZuLiCiOuS did that help I have some prob as u , I replaced all gaskets cleaned everything and it still does it
How do I replace the primer knob on a 90s Mercury 2 cycle?
The idler screw on this motor is at 9:48.
It’s a fuel filter, and it opens. There’s a filter basket inside.
Sorry for the first reaction but, it started right up then I heard a strange sound it stopped. and the little rod was not put back correct.
Put it back correct but now the carb gets full of fuel by starting amd wont start anymore. What could be the problem?
Why dident ya do the pump at the same time?
This wasnt a how to clean the carb. It was a video about struggling to remove the carb and then just cut scenes AFTER everything was done.
Exactly!!
Mcwaldo25- Sorry, cant sell the latch. Keep checking, one will pop up sooner or later.
please do a video on adjusting idle and give me the link
you have the fuel pump attached to carb and didn't take it apart and clean it , job is only half done
We're can I find the factory specs?
Just wondering what's the factory settings for the idle? I have the air set to your turn and a half just want to get the idle right. And is it me or does this high idle on the controls just for show? craig dundas there is a online manual

The float needle should be up in the carb where the float connects.
How do you get the choke knob back in? I am having trouble to get mine to fully seat on the same motor.
Michael Dorus just have to fiddle with it took me a whils

Somebody can provide factory specs for the carb screws?
Thx for posting. Informative. But gotta hold phone camera horizontal vs vertical. :). Hard to watch. 2/3 of the screen missing.
Yeah. I have learned to make better videos since then.

rokin89 page 122 show full carb spec
can anyone tell me were that little pin piece goes! you can see it at 8:17 next stubby bolt? thanks
That’s the float needle
is it normal for gas to come out the diaphragm on the side of carb with the blue push button when i press it down and also when the motor is on idle its leaking out the hole, even when i pump the prime bulb it comes out the little hole ,, anything would help ,,thank you
No gas should be leaking out the the carb. You may need some new seals and gaskets.
ok thank you much appreciated
What does the small blue button do?
codplayable that small blue button is the choke button. mine sticks down, still trying to figure out how to fix it
Sorry, not sure what's wrong with your motor. Check out iboats website, they have a really good message boards for each manufacturer of boat engine.
I fixed it to factory specs??? Sir what is factory specs🤷♂️🤷♂️
Rick rolled at 6:27 lol!
6:30 I got Rick rolled 😂😂😂
Step by step my ass, now I couldn’t put it back!!!
Did this to my engine it started right up. But then the
5:20
mine smokes like crazy, I run 50:1. why ?
I have a 15 hp mariner outboard
Jesus!! Mercury 🤷♂️ that engine looks brand new and clean!! Your customers have to do this crap already? Wonder why them Japanese outboards are on the lake pushing boats and satisfying customers???
have someone hold the camera for you next time, its hard to watch
I know it's shaky. My newer Mercury videos are much better due to this video. Thx!
You would not have this problem if you would do proper maintenance!!
...no more '80's music...aaaaagggghhhh....
you should consider having someone film you doing this instead of trying to do two things at once, FAIL!
Thank you for stating the obvious Bubbles.
Hate videos where people just want to show off their junk. Get a real motor dude.
