Now next for The Claylist are: 1. Glory Griffin aka. Mudface: She is the Most Interesting of the bunch. She was the Girlfriend of First Clayface. It's a tragic love story. She started as a production assistant on the set of Basil Karlo's final film. 2. Katherine Karlo aka. Mudface II: She is the daughter of Basil Karlo. Her seems to be Glory Griffin but it's not confirmed. She appears in Gotham Academy. 3. Clay Critter: Member of League of Super-Pets 4. Johnny Williams 5. Clownface: Clayface with Joker Toxin 6. Clayface of Japan 7. Clayface (Tangent Comics)
My headcanon is this guy was a spy who specialized in honeypots, i.e. using his good looks and charm to smooz the enemy into giving up secrets but he got discovered then blown up for payback.
I like this version of Clayface based on what I see here... is it too punny to call him a blank slate that writers could use really well? I tend toward the idea of Clayface as a shapeshifting challenge for detective skills than a horror monster (although I like both). In a Catwoman comic, I'd expect a Clayface character to have a more noir, spy v thief vibe. I hope whoever decides to take it on does 7 right in terms of, uh, fleshing out his origin.
I would actually like to see more of this guy. Specifically not as a villain. It could be interesting to have this character that is struggling with a madness caused by his situation warping his mind that wants to be a good person. And there's ample things to do with him like having him try to find out who he was, who made him, and maybe his past as a soldier being both a source of strength and a trigger. And heck, what else have the people who made him made since? You could make it where he wasn't the best dude originally maybe as well and chase the angle of whther that makes him snap or make him decide to be who he's become by the end of the tale: a better person. Have him earn redemption for the murders. The idea has legs.
Because of the way continuity works in comics, where stories can take 3 to 6 months to tell tell, but the characters never age, I tend to assume things are even more chaotic than they appear in comic book universes, happening one right after the other. If that's the case, it took Catwoman around three months and a favor to forgive Clayface for murdering several women.
Catwoman's personal Clayface, he was there... And then gone. The introduction to the famous Darwyn Cooke Catwoman design, that's occasionally still used today, and bringing back to Black Cat, really ramped up their comparisons for a new age.
Johnny Williams Clayface VIII needs a video. A fight fighter, Williams was exposed to toxic chemicals in a factory that had caught fire. Williams was later found and recruited by the villain Hush to pose as Jason Todd during the Batman: Hush storyline. For the background and backstory on Jonathan Williams/Clayface 8, as relates to Hush, check out the comic books Batman: Gotham Knights #60, #68-71. Williams initial actions as Clayface 8 are also somewhat similar to Clayface 7 in Catwoman comics.
My favorite Catwoman 1-shot was "Catwoman vs. That Bitch at the End of the Bar". It was an 8-pager but it took 9 hours for the bailbondsman to show up.
I love the Claylist! We need more. If we do ever get a Clayface in a movie I wonder which one they'd choose, this one seems like he'd would probably fit what the tone of the Robert Pattinson movie if they make multiple of them since he's a serial killer, but I'm sure they could mix and match the Origins, or find a way to do any of them, I mean they're shapeshifters there's a lot of movie potential for them, I also really hope we get Man Bat in a movie one day.
For a movie, I can't help but think it would be odd not to have Basil Karlo, the OG. And instead of him being a failed Monster actor, maybe make him a practical effect pro like Tom Savini, who is outraged everything is done in CGi now. Now that'd make for a meta story to tell in a modern movie!
In the most recent Nightwing issue Clayface appears ,however je is referred to as Preston Payne. He is the ONLY Clayface who actually cannot shape-shift yet in this issue there is no containment suit or fever. We need clarification!!!
@@ProjektTaku How could Fuller help Payne? I mean he never had the ability to shape-shift with Hagen's blood sample. There is also the reoccurring fevers. I assume Taylor remembers Karlo is reformed for now and forgot the specifics of others.
@@treydodson4726 There was a storyline invoving prometheus in the mid-2000's where that Prometheus (yeah, the evil mary sue from Cry for Justice) tweaked with Preyston's DNA to grant him the more traditional Clayface powers. and then blew him up. 'Hello, this is Star Labs. How can I help?' 'Do you have Clayface seven in a can?' 'Why yes we do.' 'Then let him out before he suffocates!' Oh, I'll get me coat. Holly was dead prior to this series, having been killed off in the pages of action comics weekly. But then she was fine here. There was a story in Catwoman secret files called 'why holly isn't dead', which implied that continuity is fluid and therefore she was fine. So perhaps the same can be used to explain why Todd was different in the second story. Eh, it's all I got.
I wonder if she’ll ever do a video on Clayface 8, or any of the off-shoot clays, like Katherine Karlo and Ethan Bennett or Annie. Hell even the newest Clayface from the new Earth-Prime Batwoman comic
I wish they had brought him in more, maybe made his redemption more of a second story beat to the over all story. It would go well with her helping the forgotten and overlooked and made more sense.
Have you ever read Silver Age Superman and thought "This character is too grounded in reality, faces too many genuine threats, is too consistent, and suffers for not being a complete psychopath"? If so, I think you might like the stories of Stardust the Super Wizard.
Hi Sasha Nice Vid ( as Always) , you brought up the point of how easily Selina brushed aside the fact that Clayface 7 is a Serial Killer of prostitutes, but isn’t that how it is in General in Comics when they want to take a Villain and redeem them as a Hero/ Anti Hero 🤔 case in point Harley Quinn who amongst a whole lot of other atrocities once Gave Away Game Cartridges loaded with Explosives to Children, & when it came time to Detonate them or not, She hesitated for a moment & then went ahead with It… While I know that Clayface 7 is no where in the same Stratosphere as a Character as Harley, We still Love & Welcome Her too the Heroic side & ignore what She has done 🤷🏾♂️ Keep Up The Great Work Sasha 🖖🏾
That first Catwoman/Clayface story is a lot like an adventure of Marvel's Spider-Woman from the 1970's. In Spider-Woman #17 from 1979, Waxman could change his appearance at will, so he'd pick up women at the disco and then when they were fooling around, he'd lose control of his wax-like flesh and the women would die.
9:13 I mean he has more issues than amnesia, his powers were out of control, and since it did seem to be some sort of military experiment they probably DID increase his rage centers
One of the (perhaps) surprising developments for me in the Cat Woman / Black Cat doppelgängers Is that it’s the Cat Woman who has seemed to become more like the Black Cat . Cat Woman has become much more regularly depicted in a (tailless) all-black (or charcoal grey) body suit ala the Black Cat’s look. She’s also become much more of an “agile, acrobatic” type fighter. If you look back at the classic Cat Woman (up through at least the 70s or 80s) she normally wears (usually purplish) dresses (albeit with leg-showing slits). She’d “fist fight “ a bit, but was more likely to use her cat-o-nine-tails whip, her big cats and/ or other cat-themed weapons. But even prior to the appearance of the Black Cat I think the depiction of Cat Woman was effected by the Batman Sixties TV show. They had Cat Woman in a skin-tight shiny black outfit - No dresses (This depiction may well have also inspired the 70s Black Widow’s look). And while she had always committed cat-themed crimes, Now she had cat-like physical affectations and accent (“That’s Purrrrrrrrrrrr-fect…”). This was continued not so much yet in the Batman comicbooks but in the Tim Burton Batman Returns movie where Michelle Pfieffer was likewise in a skin-tight latex outfit with a definite dominatrix vibe- and catlike movements and agility. Recent Catwoman seems to follow these versions of herself- as well as the Black Cat (and vice versa). She’s gone from a villain (albeit maybe not a killer) to an ambiguous character to an ally of Batman.
The fact that they brought this morally grey character back right before Zatana arrived to put Celina's own heel face turn in question makes me wonder if the author was trying to tie the two stories themathically...? (I haven't actually read them, so I dunno). Anyway, Claylist! Yay!
