I bought the first 2 parts of the story when they came out, but missed getting the last 2 parts. I didn't know who Looker or Lady Clayface were, so I was a little confused about what was going on in part 1, and that's probably why I didn't bother buying all 4 parts. About 15 years ago, I came across part 4 and picked it up. Late last year, I was visiting some comic shops with a friend to whom I had mentioned I owned just 3 parts of the story. He found me the missing part and made me buy it, completing the story. Seeing your video on this prompted me to finally read the entire story and it was better than I'd originally thought, and portrayed Batman with some qualities I wish they'd emphasize more in the modern books, like competence and compassion.

I remember when this storyline was coming out the solicits played it up pretty good as a big storyline, but my memory could be off. Of course this was back when four issue stories were the exception instead of too short like today's five or six issue storylines to write for the trade.

This is what I love about your channel: you take things that get a one line mention on Wikipedia and you actually give an in-depth explanation. I'd heard of the Mud Pack before, but now that you've explained it all I can actually appreciate it a bit more. For someone like myself who's never going to be able to read all of the comics I'd like to, this channel is a God-send.

Preston Payne was a young man with genetic problems that made him look like a monster in the eyes of others. Fed up with society and willing to prove that he was better than the others, he managed to become an actor in Hollywood under the pseudonym Basil Karlo.
People called him Clayface because Preston (now Basil) used masks for his movies, perfect and highly detailed masks that almost looked real. Those masks served to hide his deformity, which caused him physical and emotional pain and allowed him to be someone different, someone powerful (or so he believed ...).
However, his incredible acting career ended up falling into the void with the passage of time and his performances were increasingly artificial and lacking in soul. Besides that no woman wanted to date him, which increased his insecurities and internal anger.
One day Hollywood decided to make a movie about Preston's life but he would not be the main actor, it will be someone handsome (like Geroge, Tom or Brad). Preston (Basil) furious and mad with pain decides to commit various criminal acts (kidnapping, torture and murder). However he was stopped by Batman and Robin (Dick Grayson).
During the escape Preston (Basil) fell into a mysterious cave and submerged himself in a mysterious liquid that gave him the power to be a man of clay. Changing his identity to Matt Hagen's, he decided to start a criminal career as the infamous villain Clayface.

4:30 Clayface III only imagining the images on his TV puts a new light on this burn - "We'll be back after these messages with the story of a *real* super-villain -- *The Kite-Man* !"
8:28 "The addition of plain, simple *tap water* will replace all the organic constituents necessary for you to *live again* ..." What's *in* Gotham's tap water?!

Re-examining Basil Karlo's original characterization made me realize a lot of Kane, Finger and Fox original run Batman Characters appear to be based on a fusion of Gothic style Swashbucklers, Detectives, Deformities and Monsters. Several of Batman's first adventures involved him solving Sherlockian criminal schemes by gangsters, thieves, scientists and opportunists such as those of Doctor Death, Carl Kruger or Calendar Man. After Robin came along there was a shift to more swashbuckler style criminals from pirates like Tiger Shark, to robbers like Cavalier, to burglars like the 3 Devils. Then when Bob Kane wanted to adapt Gwynplaine from The Man who Laughs, we got the Joker and his success brought deformities like Jekyll and Hyde based Two Face and Phantom of the Opera based Clayface who presented us with more psychological and thriller elements. Then as the Comic Book industry shifted to the more fantastic we got monster based criminals like Killer Croc and the Monk.
